Jaquiski Tartt

49ers To Re-Sign Jaquiski Tartt

The 49ers aren’t done signing safeties. After adding Tavon Wilson earlier this morning, the team is now keeping one of their own in the fold. San Francisco is re-signing Jaquiski Tartt, sources told Peter Schrager of NFL Network (Twitter link).

Schrager reports it’s a one-year deal, although financial terms weren’t immediately available. The 49ers drafted Tartt 46th overall back in 2015, and he’s been a starter for them almost ever since. He started about half his games in his first two years, but has started every game he’s appeared in over the past four.

Injuries have limited him, as he hasn’t played in more than 12 games since 2016. Last year he started seven games before turf toe landed him on IR. He had 30 tackles, four passes defended, and an interception in those seven games.

John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan have made retaining their own guys a priority this offseason, re-signing players like Trent Williams, Jason Verrett, Kyle Juszczyk, and others. Tartt, a Samford product, turned 29 last month.

49ers Place S Jaquiski Tartt On IR

THURSDAY: Shanahan confirmed the team expects Tartt to miss the rest of the season due to turf toe. Tartt is set to be a 2021 free agent.

WEDNESDAY: The 49ers’ injured reserve list will house another starter for the time being. The team placed safety Jaquiski Tartt on IR on Wednesday.

Despite being questionable to suit up for Week 9 with a groin injury, Tartt played in the 49ers’ loss to the Packers. But he left the game because of a foot issue and will now miss at least three weeks.

San Francisco has used Tartt as a first-string safety for most of his career. The 2015 second-round pick has started under three 49ers head coaches. Although the Trent Baalke regime selected Tartt, he signed an extension during the John LynchKyle Shanahan era.

Injuries have been an issue for Tartt throughout his career, however. He landed on IR in 2017 and ’18 and missed four games during the 49ers’ most recent NFC championship season. This year, he follows numerous 49ers in being forced to miss extensive time due to injury.

Tartt will join Nick Bosa, Richard Sherman, George Kittle, Jimmy Garoppolo, Dee Ford and Raheem Mostert as key 49ers on IR. Centers Weston Richburg and Ben Garland, and wide receiver Deebo Samuel, are also currently unavailable. Though, Samuel is not on an injured list.

The 49ers promoted running back Austin Walter to take Tartt’s place on their 53-man roster.

John Lynch On Draft, Trades, Staley

With the draft approaching, 49ers general manager John Lynch conducted a teleconference with the local media Monday where he revealed several interesting nuggets. When asked about a report from earlier today that he was shopping veterans Kwon Alexander, Dee Ford, Jaquiski Tartt, and Marquise Goodwin, Lynch denied the first three but acknowledged the fourth.

Marquise is the one guy out of that group that you mentioned where there’s active discussions going on,” Lynch said, via Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports. The other guys, we love and are really looking forward to playing with moving forward.” It hasn’t been any secret they’ve been looking to trade Goodwin, and we heard last month they’d likely have to end up cutting him. However Lynch claimed there has been legit interest, saying a Goodwin deal “came close a couple of times” this offseason. Goodwin had a career year with San Francisco in 2017 with 962 yards, but injuries sapped his effectiveness and in 2019 he had only 186.

Also late last month we heard longtime left tackle Joe Staley wasn’t necessarily committed to playing in 2020, although Lynch assuaged some of those fears. “We’ve heard nothing that would lead us to believe that Joe is not going to play. So we’re encouraged with that. We’ll see where that goes,” he said. While that still is far from ironclad, it looks like Staley returning for a 14th season is a good bet.

The 49ers hold the 13th and 31st picks in the draft, and there has been speculation they’ll look to trade down since they currently don’t have any selections in the second, third, or fourth-rounds. Lynch confirmed he has talked to teams about potentially trading both picks, per a Maiocco tweet.

However, he said he’d stand pat at 13 if the team could land a “difference maker.” Lynch said that he and head coach Kyle Shanahan have so far identified six players they’d draft with the 13th pick before opting to trade down, Matt Barrows of The Athletic tweets.

49ers Shopping Dee Ford, Kwon Alexander

The 49ers are shopping several notable names in advance of the draft, according to Mike Lombardi of The Ringer (on Twitter). Execs around the league tell the former GM that edge rusher Dee Ford, linebacker Kwon Alexander and safety Jaquiski Tartt have all been made available for the right price. Wide receiver Marquise Goodwin, who was dangled earlier this year, also remains on the block.

The level of interest in those four players isn’t immediately clear, but the Niners are exploring every avenue in advance of the draft. Ford is set to enter his second season with San Francisco, just one year after coming over via trade with Kansas City. He’s in the midst of a five-year, $85MM contract and coming off of an injury-riddled season.

Thanks to knee, quadriceps, and hamstring issues, Ford was limited to just eleven regular season contests. And, when he was on the field, the 49ers had to ease the 29-year-old into action. All in all, he played on just 22% of the defensive snaps.

Alexander, 26 in August, has three seasons left on his four-year, $54MM deal. The off-ball ‘backer is remarkably tough – he suffered a torn pectoral muscle in November and somehow managed to return for the Niners’ playoff run. Alexander also battled a biceps injury that required surgery in February. These maladies emerged after he missed much of the 2018 season with an ACL tear. They will also drop his potential trade value.

The 49ers used rookie Dre Greenlaw for much of the season in Alexander’s place but reinstalled the highly paid outside linebacker in the starting lineup in the playoffs. Greenlaw has three years left on his rookie deal.

San Francisco had initially constructed Alexander’s contract to make it easier for the franchise to move on from him after 2019. But after a November restructure, that becomes more difficult. The 49ers added void years to Alexander’s contract to create cap space. Because of this, Alexander does not become a realistic cut candidate until 2022. But it appears the 49ers are trying to offload the former Buccaneer’s contract on another team and move forward with a younger player at the position.

49ers Place Jaquiski Tartt On IR

The 49ers will place safety Jaquiski Tartt on injured reserve, according to head coach Mike Shanahan. Tartt has been dealing with a shoulder injury that will benefit from rest rather than playing in the team’s final two regular season games.

A second-round pick in 2015, the 49ers rewarded Tartt with a two-year, $13MM extension prior to this season. Unfortunately, the injury bug has held him back for a second season in a row. In 2017, a broken forearm limited him to nine games. This year, he’ll finish out with just eight appearances thanks to his shoulder.

Tartt recorded 42 total tackles, two passes defensed, and an interception in his partial season. Pro Football Focus ranked him as the No. 46 safety in the NFL, framing him as a starter, though not a top-tier option. Tartt earned a solid score for his run defense, but his coverage score left much to be desired.

Tartt’s extension has him under contract through 2020 with cap numbers of $5.1MM and $6.4MM in each of the next two seasons.

49ers Sign Jaquiski Tartt To Extension

The 49ers are operating in high gear on Friday, having already traded one starter. Now, they’ve signed another to an extension.

The team announced a two-year re-up for safety Jaquiski Tartt. This will pay Tartt $13MM and could max out at $15MM, Adam Caplan of ESPN.com tweets. With Tartt having one more year left on his rookie deal, he’s now under 49ers control through the 2020 season.

A second-round pick in 2015, Tartt has only been extension-eligible for a few months now. But the franchise has evidently seen enough from him to make a commitment.

Since we arrived last year, Jaquiski has impressed us with his play, his work ethic and the kind of teammate he is,” GM John Lynch said. “We believe he’s a natural fit in our defensive system and his abilities will allow him to flourish. It is always exciting when we are able to extend our own young players like Jaquiski who are dedicated to their craft, this team and our community.”

A part-time starter for his first two seasons, Tartt broke into a full-time role in 2017. Although he suffered a forearm injury that ended his season after just nine games, the 49ers appear to have had this on their agenda for a bit now. The Samford product joins Jimmie Ward, tentatively since Ward consistently vacillates between cornerback and safety, as San Francisco’s starting safeties.

The 26-year-old defender has 167 career tackles and two interceptions. He now figures to have a big role on higher-profile 49ers defenses after playing his career thus far on rebuilding San Francisco teams.

NFC West Notes: Garoppolo, Peterson, Ward

49ers GM John Lynch is in constant contact with Jimmy Garoppolo‘s agent Don Yee, but their conversations have not included contract negotiations.

It’s kind of refreshing to talk to him because of the way he’s dealt with Tom [Brady], a lot of people have learned: He really wants these guys just to go focus on their business,” Lynch told KNBR (transcription via Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle). “We’ve agreed that ‘Hey, there’s going to be a time for that, let’s keep in regular contact.’ But, no, we haven’t started discussions. I’m sure that will come in due time. And we’re looking forward to that time.”

Recently, Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan said that he does not expect an extension for the quarterback to be completed before the end of the year. Garoppolo is technically eligible for free agency this offseason, but the Niners are expected to use the franchise tag on him if they cannot hammer out a long-term deal.

Here’s more from the NFC West:

  • When asked if Adrian Peterson could be on the Cardinals in 2018, coach Bruce Arians said yes (Twitter link via Darren Urban of the team’s site). Arians added that Peterson and the returning David Johnson could co-exist. On Friday, Peterson announced that he intends to play next year, but the Cardinals have the option of cutting him without any financial penalty.
  • An extension for safety Jaquiski Tartt appears to be high on the 49ers‘ list of priorities this offseason, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area writes. Tartt’s season ended in early November with a broken forearm, but was among the team’s leaders in tackles. This will be the first offseason in which the Niners are able to negotiate a multi-year extension with the 2015 second-round pick.
  • Meanwhile, the 49ers have defensive back Jimmie Ward under contract for next year thanks to his fifth-year option, but they’ll have to think long and hard about retaining him, Maiocco writes. Ward’s inability to stay on the field (he’s missed 14 games over the last two seasons) could deter the team from bringing him back at that rate. His ability to play either cornerback or free safety is a plus, but it’s also something of a double-edged sword in this case. Because he played cornerback last year, his option price for 2018 jumped from $5.597MM to $8.526MM.
  • 49ers like safety Eric Reid, but it’s hard to imagine them getting into a bidding war for him in free agency with Tartt, Ward, and Adrian Colbert under contract, according to Maiocco. But, at the right price, the Niners would probably welcome him back.

49ers’ Jaquiski Tartt Out For The Season

The 49ers are still winless on the year after dropping their ninth game in the row to the Cardinals on Sunday afternoon. However, that’s not the only bad news that came from today’s defeat. San Francisco has learned that safety Jaquiski Tartt would be out for the year after suffering a fractured arm in the contest, reports Cam Inman of the Mercury News (Twitter link). The team will be forced to place the 25 year-old defensive back onto the injured reserve because of the injury.

Jaquiski Tartt

This is the second season ending injury the 49ers have seen to their safety corps in as many weeks, with Jimmie Ward hitting the IR with the same ailment after last week’s game versus the Eagles.

Tartt, 25, played opposite of Ward for most of the season, which eventually forced Eric Reid to make a position switch to linebacker. The former 2015 third round pick had accumulated 52 tackles and one interception on the season, but was rated very highly by Pro Football Focus, registering as the site’s 11th best safety in the league through eight weeks.

The news acts as just another blow to what has been a trying season for the 49ers, but the team will have no choice but to soldier on without their their young defensive back. Head coach Kyle Shanahan has just one backup safety on the roster in Dexter McCoil, so it seems likely that the team will look to add some depth to the position before the team plays the Giants next Sunday.

49ers Sign Nine Draft Picks

The 49ers announced they have signed nine of their ten draft picks. That group includes second round safety Jaquiski Tartt but does not include first round defensive end Arik Armstead.

Tartt, third-round linebacker Eli Harold, third-round tight end Blake Bell, third-round running back Mike Davis, fourth-round wide receiver DeAndre Smelter, fifth-round punter Bradley Pinion, sixth-round lineman Ian Silberman, seventh-round lineman Trent Brown, and seventh-round tight end Rory Anderson.

Tartt, 23, played in 44 games and totaled 277 tackles, six interceptions, 20 passes defensed and 6.5 tackles for loss in his career. The Samford product was named American Football Coaches Association FCS All-America team and Second-Team AP All-America in his senior season.

Extra Points: Dez, Johnson, Cooper, Draft Visits

The recent falling out between Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant and longtime mentor David Wells makes it unlikely Bryant will stay in Dallas long term, according to Jason Cole of Bleacher Report (video link). The Cowboys view Wells as crucial to keeping Bryant out of trouble off the field, and if Wells isn’t going to continue on as part of Bryant’s life, Cole doesn’t expect the team to risk giving the wideout a long-term deal. Bryant, on whom the Cowboys placed the franchise tag earlier this offseason, is scheduled to become a free agent next year.

Rounding up the rest of the latest NFL news as Friday comes to a close:

  • Colts receiver Andre Johnson spent the first 12 years of his career with the Texans and caught over 1,000 passes before the team released him in March. Despite subsequently signing with AFC South rival Indianapolis, Johnson doesn’t harbor ill will against his old team. “It wasn’t about circling (game) dates or nothing against the Texans. I had 12 great years [in Houston],” Johnson said Friday, according to Brian T. Smith of the Houston Chronicle“I have nothing bad against the Texans.”
  • The Giants could draft a receiver with the ninth overall pick, according to ESPN’s Jordan Raanan (Twitter link), who believes Amari Cooper of Alabama tops their wideout big board. However, Raanan tweets that it’s unlikely Cooper will fall to the Giants.
  • Speaking of Cooper, multiple teams rate him as the best player in the draft, per Peter King of TheMMQB.com (Twitter).
  • University of Kentucky edge rusher Bud Dupree visited the Rams on Friday, reports Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch (Twitter).
  • Sacramento State wide receiver DeAndre Carter will visit the Patriots on Monday, according to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee (Twitter).
  • Washington visited with University of Pittsburgh linebacker Todd Thomas on Friday, tweets Tony Pauline of DraftInsider.Net.
  • The Colts on Friday hosted a pair of safety prospects – Northwestern’s Ibraheim Campbell and Samford’s Jaquiski Tartt – per Pauline (Twitter).
