Eagles Cut OL Jamon Brown From Practice Squad

Jamon Brown‘s short stint with the Eagles has already come to an end. The veteran offensive lineman was released from the team’s practice squad today, with ESPN’s Tim McManus writing that the transaction was “a result of Brown violating team rules.”

According to multiple reports (including Josh Alper of ProFootballTalk.com), Brown was booted from the team hotel and sent home by Eagles chief security officer Dom DiSandro on Saturday evening. While specifics haven’t been reported, Brown’s banishment was due to “conduct detrimental to the team.” General Manager Howie Roseman and head coach Doug Pederson subsequently spoke with the lineman and informed him he was no longer part of the organization.

Following a disappointing stint with the Falcons in 2019, the former third-rounder joined the Bears practice squad back in September. A few weeks later, the Eagles came in and signed the 27-year-old to their active roster, and he started their Week 6 game in place of injured right guard Matt Pryor.

Brown was cut by Philly in late October but landed on the team’s practice squad. He was promoted to the active roster soon after, but he was demoted following the Eagles Week 7 contest. In total, Brown’s stint with the Eagles ended with him having appeared in two games (one start).

Eagles Release G Jamon Brown

The Eagles have released guard Jamon Brown, per a team announcement. The news doesn’t come as a huge surprise following Brown’s rocky performance against the Ravens on Sunday.

The Eagles plucked Brown off of the Browns’ practice squad in September following a string of offensive line injuries. To recap: They lost Pro Bowl guard Brandon Brooks to another Achilles tear, lost Andre Dillard for the season, and had Pro Bowl right tackle Lane Johnson on the Week 1 inactive list due to injury. Brown joined the club just after Washington managed to sack Carson Wentz eight times.

On Sunday against the Ravens, Browns was a virtual turnstile, allowing defenders to get to Wentz with ease. He also appeared to adjust his own gloves in the middle of one play and later bumped into his own quarterback, leading to a sack.

Brown has bounced around a bit since 2018, when a suspension cost him his starting gig with the Rams. Last year, he suited up in ten games for the Falcons, including nine starts. All in all, Brown has 60 career games to his credit, 47 starts, and an enviable jersey collection.

Eagles To Sign G Jamon Brown Off Bears’ Practice Squad

Jamon Brown‘s Chicago stay did not last long. The Eagles are signing the veteran guard off the Bears’ practice squad, the team announced Tuesday.

The Bears added Brown to their P-squad last week but opted to let him join the Eagles’ active roster rather than promote him to their own.

The Eagles have run into extensive trouble up front. They lost Pro Bowl guard Brandon Brooks to another Achilles tear, lost Andre Dillard for the season and had Pro Bowl right tackle Lane Johnson on the Week 1 inactive list due to injury. This played a key role in Washington sacking Carson Wentz eight times.

Brown was a full-time Rams starter in 2017, when the team snapped a lengthy playoff drought, but a suspension halted his run with Los Angeles’ first unit. The Rams waived Brown midway through the 2018 season, but he became a Giants starter soon after. The Falcons signed Brown in 2019 and used him as a starter in nine games. But Atlanta cut the veteran blocker this offseason.

Bears Announce 16-Man Practice Squad

Teams are starting to announce their full expanded practice squads, and we’ll be bringing you recaps all day. Just in is the Chicago Bears, who announced a full slate of 16 players:

  • QB Tyler Bray
  • RB Artavis Pierce
  • WR Reggie Davis
  • S Stephen Denmark
  • WR Thomas Ives
  • WR Rodney Adams
  • TE Jesper Horsted
  • OL Sam Mustipher
  • OL Jamon Brown
  • OL Lachavious Simmons
  • OL Badara Traore
  • DT Abdullah Anderson
  • DE LaCale London
  • LB Rashad Smith
  • S Xavier Crawford
  • K Cairo Santos

Bray has bounced between the practice squad and active roster the past couple of years now, and will serve as the third quarterback behind Mitchell Trubisky and Nick Foles. Santos is a veteran kicker with a good amount of experience. Right after he was cut we heard the Bears might be planning on him kicking Week 1 against the Lions if Eddy Pineiro still isn’t ready to come back from his groin injury.

Everybody on this list was with the Bears for camp except Brown, who was cut by the Falcons last month. He signed a three-year $18.75MM deal last March, and started nine games for Atlanta last season.

North Notes: Bears, Packers, Tomlin, Browns

The Bears became the latest team to work out Jamon Brown, with SI.com’s Albert Breer tweeting the guard was in Chicago for an audition. The free agent guard, a Falcons cut last month, has already worked out for the 49ers. Brown was a full-time Rams starter in 2017, but a 2018 suspension derailed his momentum. The Rams waived him shortly after he returned from that ban, but he ended the ’18 season as a Giants first-stringer. The Bears are returning four starters from last season and have been trying ex-Seahawks right tackle Germain Ifedi at guard.

Here is the latest from the North divisions:

  • The Steelers will let Mike Tomlin enter a contract year. Signed through 2021, Tomlin will not be extended this year, Art Rooney II said (via The Athletic’s Ed Bouchette, subscription required). The Steelers gave Tomlin his most recent extension last July, and he managed an eight-win season despite the largely Ben Roethlisberger-less Steelers ranking 32nd in offensive DVOA. Rooney said he plans to address the contracts of Tomlin and GM Kevin Colbert, who just signed a one-year extension, in 2021.
  • One of the league’s healthiest teams last season, the Packers may be down a starter in Week 1. Billy Turner suffered a knee injury during a scrimmage and is uncertain for Green Bay’s opener, Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com notes. Turner played guard for the Packers last season but is competing with free agency addition Ricky Wagner at right tackle this year. Lane Taylor, who missed all of last season, is expected to play right guard opposite emerging talent Elgton Jenkins on the left side.
  • For the second time in three weeks, the Browns brought in Cody Parkey for a visit. The veteran was part of a kicker group to work out for the Browns in August, though it was reported at the time the team was organizing a COVID-related emergency kicker list. Parkey briefly kicked for the Titans last season.
  • Bears training camp coaching intern Henry Burris will stay on the team’s staff all season, Matt Nagy announced. Known mostly for his 17-season CFL run, Burris also was a Bears quarterback for a short time in the early 2000s. This will be his first NFL coaching gig.
  • Vikings linebacker Cameron Smith underwent successful open-heart surgery recently, according to the Associated Press. Mike Zimmer said the second-year defender, who landed on Minnesota’s IR list, will remain in Philadelphia for the foreseeable future to recover.

49ers To Work Out Jamon Brown

Jamon Brown could be on the verge of landing his next job. The 49ers will audition the offensive lineman on Friday, according to Vaughn McClure of ESPN.com (on Twitter).

Brown started nine games last season but the Falcons released him from his three-year, $18.75MM deal earlier this week. Finances may have been a factor, but the Falcons also seem to be high on third-round pick Matt Hennessy, who may wind up as the team’s starting left guard. Brown, meanwhile, is still owed $4.75MM in guaranteed base salary from Atlanta.

Brown has bounced around a bit since 2018, when a suspension cost him his starting gig with the Rams. The Giants picked him up off of waivers that year, prior to his free agent deal with the Falcons. All in all, Brown has 60 career games to his credit, including 47 starts.

Falcons To Release G Jamon Brown

The Falcons will release veteran guard Jamon Brown, according to ESPN.com’s Field Yates (on Twitter). This move will be somewhat costly for the team, but it also may signal a potential long-term starter is ready to begin his first-string tenure.

Brown started nine games for the Falcons last season but has been vying for the team’s left guard job with third-round rookie Matt Hennessy. The latter, drafted as a center out of Temple, may be on track to winning that battle, Yates adds. However, the Falcons still employ veteran James Carpenter as well.

Atlanta signed both Brown and Carpenter last year, and those acquisitions preceded the team’s first-round selection of Chris Lindstrom. The latter missed much of his rookie season. Brown was due $4.75MM in guaranteed base salary from the Falcons this season. As of Monday afternoon, the Falcons only held $8.4MM in cap space. This transaction will cut into that figure.

The veteran guard has bounced around a bit since a 2018 suspension resulted in him losing his Rams starting job. The Giants claimed Brown on waivers after the Rams cut him, and the Falcons signed him to a three-year, $18.75MM deal last March.

Contract Details: Amos, Patterson, Carpenter, Brown

Let’s take a look at the details of a few freshly-signed contracts:

Falcons To Sign G Jamon Brown

The Falcons added another piece to their offensive line this afternoon, coming to terms with Jamon Brown, Vaughn McClure of ESPN.com tweets.

Brown joins James Carpenter in being a Georgia-bound guard. A Rams starter, Brown saw a suspension derail his run with the team. He landed soon as a Giants starter, however, and will make a run to crack the Falcons’ starting lineup or be a top swing man.

Atlanta still has Brandon Fusco under contract, so the plan may be to play Carpenter opposite the incumbent veteran and have Brown work as a swing backup. Brown, though, has started 38 games in his career.

The former third-round pick’s path back to a Giants starter spot became blocked when New York traded for Kevin Zeitler. Brown rated as Pro Football Focus’ No. 62 guard last season.

Extra Points: Murray, NFL Draft, Brown, Giants, Butler, Raiders

Kyler Murray’s Oklahoma Sooners were eliminated from the College Football Playoff last night, and the watch is officially on to see whether or not he’ll enter the NFL Draft. Murray is a two-sport athlete who was drafted ninth overall by the A’s to play baseball. The A’s gave him a nearly $5MM signing bonus to play baseball, but his Heisman winning season has left open the possibility that he’ll decide to play football instead.

Speaking before the game against Alabama, Murray didn’t shut the door on an NFL career even though his baseball agent has insisted he’ll be playing pro baseball, saying “it’s never bad to have options” according to Charean Williams of ProFootballTalk.com.. It’s unclear where Murray might go in the draft if he declares, and reports have him going anywhere from early in the first round to late on Day 2. With spring training for MLB teams set to begin in just a couple of months, we should know more about his intentions very soon.

Here’s more from around the league:

  • Speaking of the draft, today’s Week 17 slate gave us some much anticipated clarity about the 2019 NFL draft order. The top 18 is officially set, per ESPN, with the Cardinals picking first overall. The 49ers, Jets, Raiders, and Buccaneers will round out the top five. The Cardinals will likely have a new coach and possibly new front office making the decision, and plenty of the top teams could be looking to trade down with teams more in need of a quarterback.
  • Guard Jamon Brown has played well for the Giants since being claimed off waivers from the Rams earlier this year, but New York hasn’t tried to negotiate a new contract with him yet, a source told Matt Lombardo of NJ.com. Brown is set to be a free agent this offseason, and could land a decent sized payday. He’s been a solid starter in his career, but was waived by the Rams shortly after returning from a two game suspension.
  • Raiders tight end Paul Butler has been inactive for both games he’s been on the 53-man roster, but the team apparently thinks highly of him. Oakland promoted him from the practice squad because the Lions were trying to sign him away, a source told Michael Gehlken of the Las Vegas Review-Journal (Twitter link). Butler is a rookie UDFA from tiny school California University of Pennsylvania.
