The Browns‘ search for an offensive coordinator appears to have been one of the league’s more expansive hunts so far, with nearly a dozen candidates linked to the position at some point, though many have since found other jobs. Still, perhaps no name among Cleveland’s candidates is more surprising than the one Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets today. According to Rapoport, former Rams head coach Mike Martz recently interviewed with the Browns for their OC job. A source tells Alex Marvez of Fox Sports (Twitter link) that Martz is indeed interested in returning to coaching after essentially being retired since leaving the Bears after the 2011 season.
Here’s more on the Browns and a few other teams from out of the NFL’s two North divisions:
4:42pm: The Dolphins have whittled their roster down to 53 players, but the most important news to come out of Miami is that center Mike Pouncey, who is dealing with a hip injury, will be placed on the active roster rather than on the PUP or IR designated to return list. Pouncey will probably still miss some time, but he’ll be eligible to play as soon as he is healthy. The following players have been waived per a press release:
12:38pm: Following the Dolphins signing of Knowshon Moreno, it didn’t look particularly good for running back Daniel Thomas. Once it was clear that Moreno and Lamar Miller were the top backs on the roster, it looked even worse for the 26-year-old.
Well, as Andrew Abramson of the Palm Beach Post reports (via Twitter), the Dolphins have cut ties with Thomas. It wasn’t that long ago that he compiled 165 carries as a rookie, so there’s a chance a team may take a flyer on him.
The Dolphins also let go of 13 other players. The complete list is below:
The Dolphins have also informed defensive tackle Kemal Johnson that he will be placed on injured reserve (via Jackson’s Twitter).
Monday, 11:17am: In addition to confirming the signing of Rogers, the Dolphins announced (via Twitter) that they had added defensive tackle Cory Grissom.
Sunday, 6:32pm: The Dolphins are planning to sign kicker Jake Rogers, formerly of the Redskins, according to Alex Marvez of Fox Sports 1 (via Twitter). The team is in need of kicking help after the recent injuries to Caleb Sturgis and John Potter.
Sturgis, the team’s projected starter, has struggled with a groin injury that will keep him out of practice for the time being. He was selected in the fifth round of the 2013 NFL Draft, out of the University of Florida.
As we learned when the Redskins signed Rogers earlier this offseason, he has yet to attempt a kick in an NFL game. He has competed for spots on multiple NFL teams, since signing with the Saints as an undrafted free agent in 2011.
Rogers is the University of Cincinnati’s all-time leading scorer.
We’ll round up the day’s minor transactions from around the NFL right here, with additional moves listed at the top of the page throughout the afternoon and evening:
Earlier updates:
It’s been a fairly quiet day for transactions around the NFL, but a number of teams have completed minor moves, including signing mid-round draft picks. We’ll round up the day’s minor transactions right here:
Redskins backup quarterback Kirk Cousins reportedly drew renewed trade interest during last week’s draft, but GM Bruce Allen confirmed yesterday that the club never came close to moving Cousins over the past few days. With Cousins appearing likely to stay put in Washington, Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com tweets that the Browns’ previous efforts to acquire Cousins were rebuffed by the ‘Skins. Although many involved parties, including Cousins and starting QB Robert Griffin III, would welcome a deal that sent the No. 2 elsewhere, Allen doesn’t seem inclined to make such a move anytime soon, as La Canfora tweets.
Here’s more from around the NFC East:
The Redskins have officially signed kicker Jake Rogers, the team announced today (via Twitter). As Mike Jones of the Washington Post tweets, Rogers has yet to record a kick in an NFL game, but has spent time with the Bucs, Saints, Cowboys and Giants. He’s expected to compete with Kai Forbath this summer.
