Steelers Make Three Moves

The Steelers made a trio of minor transactions yesterday. According to Mark Kaboly of DKPittsburghSports.com (via Twitter), the team has released long-snapper Kameron Canaday and waived/injured wideout Dez Stewart. Meanwhile, Ray Fittipaldo of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the Steelers have signed offensive lineman Jake Rodgers.

NFL: Preseason-Arizona Cardinals at Houston TexansStewart was signed to a reserve/futures contract back in February. The wideout was a standout at Ohio Dominican University (Division II), hauling in 196 receptions for 3,197 yards and 25 touchdowns over 43 collegiate games. The receiver was especially expendable after the Steelers selected JuJu Smith-Schuster during last week’s draft.

Canaday went from a 2016 undrafted free agent to the Cardinals starting long snapper last season, but he was waived after only three weeks. The Steelers snatched him in February, but similar to Stewart, Canaday was recently squeezed out by a rookie. Pittsburgh selected Colin Holba in the sixth-round of last week’s draft, and the rookie will compete with incumbent Greg Warren for the starting gig.

Rodgers has yet to appear in an NFL game after being selected in the seventh round of the 2015 draft. The Eastern Washington product has spent time with the Falcons, Giants, and Panthers. Assuming Rodgers continues to play offensive tackle, he’ll be competing with Jerald Hawkins and Brian Mihalik for snaps.

Today’s minor moves:

  • Cornerback Cody Riggs is now back with the Titans after being waived last week, as Terry McCormick of TitansInsider.com reports (Twitter link). To create a roster spot, Tennessee has waived third quarterback Alex Tanney, tweets Paul Kuharsky of ESPN.com.
  • The Cowboys announced that they’ve waived cornerback Dax Swanson, who signed with the club in June.
  • The following players have been released from their respective teams’ injured reserve list with an injury settlement (all Twitter links via Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle unless noted): Buccaneers TE Kivon Cartwright (link via Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times), Cardinals LB Tristan Okpalaugo (link), Colts CB D’Joun Smith (link), Jets WR Kenbrell Thompkins (link), Giants T Jake Rodgers (link), Packers C Kyle Steuck (link), Texans C Dalton Freeman (link via Sarah Barshop of ESPN.com).
  • The Ravens also released wide receiver Michael Campanaro with an injury settlement, but they expect to re-sign him for the second half of the season, tweets Jeff Zriebec of the Baltimore Sun.

Giants Down To 53

The Giants started their cuts early this morning by cutting a handful of big wide receivers and went from there. French wide receiver Anthony Dable and Cal product Darius Powe are among those who have been shown the door.

Dable played professionally in Grenoble, France and also spent the last two seasons in Germany. With his German Football League team, Dable caught 145 passes for just under 2,500 yards and 32 touchdowns over the last two campaigns. Although he did not grow up in a football-heavy atmosphere, he learned the game by watching others from afar.

I learned football by watching videos of the receivers I like on YouTube, and I like guys that are the same size as me, like Brandon Marshall,” Dable said. “I think I play like Brandon Marshall. I like how he moves after the catch, with his size.”

Powe, a 6’3″ receiver, saved his best season for last at Cal. As a senior, Powe hauled in 47 catches for 560 yards and 8 touchdowns.

We’ll keep a running list of the Giants’ moves here. All of these moves have been confirmed via team press release.
