Packers Activate S Ibraheim Campbell

The Packers have activated defensive back Ibraheim Campbell from the physically unable to perform list, the club announced.

Campbell originally joined Green Bay’s roster last November when the Packers claimed him off waivers shortly after trading fellow safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix to the Redskins. Unfortunately, Campbell’s season ended roughly a month later when he suffered a torn ACL. Green Bay re-signed him in August 2019, but he spent the first nine weeks of the year on PUP while recovering from his knee injury.

Now 27 years old, Campbell entered the NFL as a fourth-round pick of the Browns in 2015. A part-time starter during his time in Cleveland, Campbell has since bounced around the league, seeing action with the Texans, Cowboys, and Jets over the past two-plus seasons.

The Packers already have three capable safeties in Adrian Amos, Darnell Savage, and Will Redmond, meaning Campbell will likely see most of his time on special teams. He’s played at least 40% of his club’s special teams snaps in six of his seven NFL seasons.

NFL Players Returning From IR/PUP

Now that we’re approaching the midway point of the regular season, players on various injury lists are now able to begin to return to practice and, eventually, return to game action. Here’s the list of players coming back to practice this week while on injured reserve or physically unable to perform list, as Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets:

Players on the PUP list are only required to miss six weeks of the regular season, so every player listed above with the exception of Sternberger could technically be activated this weekend. Sternberger has officially been designated as one of Green Bay’s IR/return players, according to Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com (Twitter link). Because he was originally placed on IR, Sternberger — a third-round rookie — will be absent for at least two more weeks.

Packers Rumors: Perry, Wilkerson, Campbell

The latest out of Green Bay:

  • Outside linebacker Nick Perry wouldn’t be surprised if the Packers declined to pay his $4.8MM roster bonus due on March 15, a source close to Perry tells Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com (on Twitter). However, Perry isn’t sure if the Packers would offer a restructure or just move on in that scenario. Perry landed on IR in November with a knee injury and finished out with a career-low 1.5 sacks. The Packers happily re-upped him on a five-year, $60MM extension in 2017, but he’s missed eleven games since then.
  • There’s “mutual interest” between the Packers and defensive tackle Muhammad Wilkerson for next season, a source tells Demovsky (on Twitter). Wilkerson joined the Packers on a one-year, $5MM deal last year and he’s probably looking at another prove-it deal if he wants to stay in Green Bay. The ex-Jet appeared in just three games last year before an ankle injury wiped out his season.
  • The Packers still have an interest in bringing back free agent safety Ibraheim Campbell, according to Tom Silverstein of the Journal Sentinel (on Twitter). However, Campbell suffered a torn ACL against the Cardinals in December, which the team didn’t disclose. The safety, who was effective in his three games for the Packers, could be ready by training camp and brought back.

Jets Place RB Bilal Powell On IR

The Jets placed running back Bilal Powell on injured reserve, according to a club announcement. Powell suffered a neck injury on Sunday against the Vikings, and the injury will bar him from returning this season. 

Sunday’s game could mark the end of Powell’s tenure with the Jets. Powell, a fourth-round pick of Gang Green in 2011, is in the final year of his three-year, $11.25MM extension. While he has been a staple of the Jets’ backfield for years, it’s possible that they’ll go in another direction this offseason.

Powell has never been the most exciting player or much of a household name, but he has been quietly consistent for the Jets. Powell has rushed for an average of 4.4 yards per carry over the course of his eight-year career and been a consistently capable pass-catcher out of the backfield. In 2016, he caught a career-high 58 passes for 388 yards and two receiving scores.

Powell’s 2018 season has come to a close after racking up 343 yards off of 80 carries. He found pay dirt once on a receiving touchdown and he had eleven grabs for 110 yards on the whole.

Without Powell, the Jets may consider adding a running back to add support behind Isaiah Crowell. For now, they’re using the spot to sign safety Ibraheim Campbell. Rookie Trenton Cannon is technically the only other running back on the roster, but Eli McGuire is back practicing and eligible to come off of IR next week.
