DeForest Buckner sustained an ankle injury against the Packers, and the Colts will not have their top defensive lineman available for a while. Buckner will head to IR.
This marks a change of pace for the durable defensive tackle, who entered this season having missed all of two games since his 2016 rookie season. A Monday report from NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport indicated X-rays revealed Buckner suffered a sprained ankle that was not considered serious, and while the Pro Bowler’s season is not in jeopardy, he is out for at least four games.
An MRI affected this situation, Rapoport adds. The Colts signed defensive end Genard Avery to their active roster and added D-tackle Adam Gotsis to the practice squad. Indianapolis also signed cornerback Gregory Junior and defensive end Titus Leo to the practice squad, releasing D-tackle McTelvin Agim and corner Ameer Speed from the P-squad.
Buckner, 30, has rewarded the Colts for the trade they made with the 49ers four years ago. As San Francisco determined second contracts for both Buckner and Arik Armstead were not viable, the team dealt the former to Indianapolis for a 2020 first-round pick. While the 49ers did not do well to replace Buckner with that choice (Javon Kinlaw), the Colts enjoyed consistent production from the 2016 first-round pick. Buckner has made three Pro Bowls as a Colt, ascending to first-team All-Pro status in 2020 as well.
The Colts have seen Buckner spearhead their pass rush, with UFA addition Samson Ebukam and recent draftees Kwity Paye and Dayo Odeyingbo coming along to help the cause last season. Buckner has 1.5 sacks this year, though the Colts are 0-2. Replacing the ninth-year standout will be a tall order, as the team has not needed to play without him much. Buckner played through a UCL tear in his left elbow in 2022 and signed an extension (two years, $46MM, $43.25MM guaranteed) this offseason.
Indy re-signed nose tackle Grover Stewart and hybrid D-lineman Tyquan Lewis this offseason. The team also re-signed Taven Bryan and added former Dolphins DT Raekwon Davis. Buckner’s presence, however, has helped the team’s pass rush on the whole. With Ebukam out with a torn Achilles, the Colts look set for an uphill battle. They can activate Buckner in Week 7.

Joshua Kelley will land in New York after spending the first four seasons of his career with the Chargers. The running back is coming off a 2023 campaign where he started a career-high three games while compiling 437 yards from scrimmage. In a post Saquon Barkley-era, Kelley will be joining an uncertain depth chart that features the likes of Devin Singletary, Eric Gray, and rookie fifth-round pick Tyrone Tracy Jr..
Grayland Arnold won’t have an opportunity to contribute to the Steelers in 2023 after landing on IR. The defensive back was battling it out for Pittsburgh’s starting slot corner spot, with ESPN’s Brooke Pryor noting that Arnold’s injury means UDFA Beanie Bishop likely won the job. Arnold spent the past three seasons with the Texans, collecting 22 tackles in 20 games.
Trace McSorley‘s career journey brings him to Washington, per Grant Paulsen of 106.7 The Fan in Washington. As Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post notes, the veteran should soak up some snaps on Saturday with both Marcus Mariota (groin) and Sam Hartman (shoulder) sidelined. McSorley was a 2019 sixth-round pick by the Ravens, and he’s now had stints with six different squads throughout his career.
In addition to adding safety Adrian Amos today, the Jaguars made a handful of additional moves to shake up the bottom of their squad. The team announced the signing of Amos and defensive tackle Jonathan Marshall. To make room on the roster, the Jaguars waived defensive tackle Adam Gotsis and waived/injured CB Gregory Junior.

Besides Amos, Gotsis is the most notable name on the list. The veteran defensive lineman spent the past four seasons in Jacksonville, appearing in 64 regular season games. He started 14 of his 16 games during his first year with the Jaguars, collecting 37 tackles and one forced fumble while appearing in about 50 percent of his team’s defensive snaps.
He only started 12 games for Jacksonville between 2021 and 2023, but he still saw a pretty consistent role on defense (including a pair of campaigns with 400-plus snaps). Over that stretch, Gotsis collected 5.5 sacks and 23 QB hits. Despite the production, the 31-year-old saw himself get pushed down the depth chart this offseason. The Jaguars added defensive end Arik Armstead and a trio of DL rookies (including second-round defensive tackle Maason Smith).
With Gotsis facing an uphill battle to make a crowded depth chart, the team decided to pivot to a developmental piece at the position. Marshall was a sixth-round pick by the Jets in 2021, but he only got into four games during his one-plus seasons in New York. He most recently spent time on the Steelers practice squad.
Junior was a 2022 sixth-round pick by the Jags. He’ll revert to the team’s injured reserve if he passes through waivers.

Jean-Charles spilt his time between the 49ers and Saints in 2023, finishing the campaign in New Orleans. He was used all-but exclusively on special teams during that time, which has also been the case throughout the rest of his career. The 25-year-old will have the chance to carve out a larger role in his first full season with New Orleans if he can make the active roster at the start of the 2024 campaign.
Jones, Junior and Van Lanen were each tendered as exclusive rights restricted free agents, so their respective deals come as no surprise. Seattle’s OTAs began this week, and each member of the trio will now be in place to take part in on-field work when that takes place before competing for roster spots in training camp.
After extending JaMycal Hasty this past offseason, the Jaguars are moving on from the running back. The team announced today that they’ve waived Hasty. The Jaguars are using the open roster spot on cornerback Gregory Junior, who has been activated from injured reserve.
Hasty started his NFL career in San Francisco. He joined the 49ers in 2020 after going undrafted out of Baylor, and he proceeded to spend two years with the organization. While a lot of his work came on special teams, he showed some promise on offense, averaging 4.8 yards on his 85 touches.
He was snagged off waivers by the Jaguars prior to the 2022 campaign. After initially serving as the team’s RB3, he was promoted to be Travis Etienne‘s primary backup following the James Robinson trade. Hasty ended up getting into all 17 games for the Jaguars last season, finishing with a career-high 320 yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns. He also got into Jacksonville’s two playoff games, adding another 43 yards on five touches. Following that performance, the Jaguars extended Hasty in February.
However, the 27-year-old has seen a reduced role in 2023. Rookie Tank Bigsby has taken over the second spot on the depth chart, and Hasty has also been outsnapped by D’Ernest Johnson. In total, Hasty has seen time in three games, with the majority of his snaps coming on special teams.
The Jaguars selected Junior, a Ouachita Baptist product, in the sixth round of the 2022 draft. He ended up spending the majority of his rookie season on the practice squad, although he collect six tackles in his one appearance with the big-league club. The defensive back suffered a hamstring injury in Week 1 that ultimately landed him on injured reserve.

This marks a New York return for Corbin, who went to training camp with the Giants. A UDFA out of Florida State, Corbin signed a reserve/futures contract with the Giants in January but did not make their 53-man roster. The Panthers had kept Corbin on their practice squad since early September. Rather than promote Corbin to their 53-man roster to block this New York return, Carolina will let him join the Giants’ 53. Corbin joins Saquon Barkley, Gary Brightwell and fifth-round rookie Eric Gray as running backs on Big Blue’s 53-man roster. Both Brightwell (hamstring) and Gray (calf) suffered injuries in Week 7, creating a need at the position.

Adoree’ Jackson served as the Giants‘ No. 1 cornerback last season, his second with the team. Despite coming off injury, Jackson fared well against Justin Jefferson in the Giants’ wild-card win. But the team is experimenting on a potential shift in the veteran’s role during training camp. Jackson has seen extensive time in the slot in camp, and Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News notes the prospect of Jackson in the slot and Deonte Banks and Tre Hawkins outside is viable.
The Titans used Jackson as an outside corner during his Tennessee tenure, and the Giants stationed Darnay Holmes in the slot last year. They also drafted Cor’Dale Flott as a slot option in last year’s third round. But Holmes has struggled during camp, per Leonard. Hawkins, chosen in the sixth round out of Old Dominion, does not have slot experience. Jackson’s willingness as a tackler would benefit the Giants if they followed through on this, though the move is not set in stone. Holmes still operated as the team’s lead slot defender in a joint practice against the Lions on Wednesday, Dan Duggan of The Athletic tweets. Hawkins being in consideration for a regular role would be notable for a Giants team that struggled for CB depth last year.
