Steelers Cut LS Greg Warren

Long snapper Greg Warren won’t be playing for the Steelers this season and it sounds like he won’t be playing for any other NFL team either. In a press release announcing that Warren has been cut with a failed physical, Warren indicated that he’ll be staying out of football in 2017.

“I had full intentions of playing this upcoming season, but in light of new information I’ve recently received from my doctors relating to a past injury, it has been determined that trying to compete in the 2017 season may be a risk to my long-term health,” Warren said. “After discussing this with the Steelers, we have decided it would be in everyone’s best interest to release me at this point.”

The 35-year-old (36 in the fall) had been the team’s long snapper since 2005 and played in 180 career games. Now that he is taking the year off, sixth-round pick Colin Holba figures to step into his role.

Today’s minor moves:

  • The Steelers announced that they’ve signed long snapper Greg Warren to a one-year deal. While there’s word on the financial details, Warren has signed a minimum salary benefit contract in each of the past few offseasons, so it’s fair to assume he’s agreed to a similar pact. Warren, 35, has served as Pittsburgh’s long snapper since 2005, and has played in 180 career games.
  • The Steelers weren’t done inking new deals with special teamers, as the club has also agreed to a one-year contract with exclusive rights free agent Chris Boswell, tweets James Palmer of NFL.com. As an ERFA, Boswell lacked the ability to negotiate with any other teams unless Pittsburgh waived its rights of first refusal. Acting as the Steelers’ placekicker for the past two seasons, the 25-year-old Boswell has managed an 87.7% career success rate on field goals, and converted all of his extra point attempts in 2016.
  • Former NFL quarterback Ryan Lindley announced (via Twitter) that he’s signed with the Ottawa Redblacks of the Canadian Football League. Lindley, 27, started six regular season games in two seasons with the Cardinals, and was memorably under center during Arizona’s 2014 playoff contest. After a brief stint with the Colts in 2015, Lindley was out of the league last year.
  • The Jets have agreed to sign former Sacramento State long snapper Josh Latham, according to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle (Twitter link). Tanner Purdum is New York’s current long snapper.

Here are Friday’s minor signings, cuts, and other moves from across the NFL:

  • The Steelers have re-signed long snapper Greg Warren to another one-year deal, tweets Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Warren, who typically inks one-year contracts with the maximum allowable signing bonus for a minimum salary benefit player, has served as the Steelers’ long snapper since 2005, appearing in 164 regular-season games during that time.
  • The Jaguars have signed Josh Johnson to a free agent contract, PR rep Tad Dickman announced today (via Twitter). This Josh Johnson isn’t the former Buccaneers and Bengals quarterback, but rather a cornerback from the CFL. Johnson played for the B.C. Lions last season, recording 56 tackles, an interception, and a sack, before trying out for the Jags in December.

Steelers Re-Sign Greg Warren

The Steelers have re-signed veteran long snapper Greg Warren, the team announced today in a press release. Warren, who was set to become an unrestricted free agent, agreed to a one-year contract.

While terms of the deal aren’t immediately available, Warren is coming off a minimum salary benefit deal, which saw him earn a minimum base salary and the maximum allowable $65K signing bonus. There’s a good chance his new agreement with Pittsburgh looks the same as that contract.

Warren, 33, has served as the Steelers’ regular long snapper since the 2005 season, appearing in 149 regular season games during his time with the club. He had been one of 14 long snappers around the NFL eligible to hit the open market this offseason.

The Steelers have re-signed long snapper Greg Warren, tweets Howard Balzer of The SportsXchange. The team has since confirmed Warren’s new deal, which Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette says is a one-year pact (Twitter link).

Warren, the Steelers’ longtime long snapper, has been with the team since the 2005 season. Coming off a minimum salary benefit deal that included a $65K bonus in 2013, Warren will almost certainly be in line for the same type of deal in 2014, though terms haven’t been disclosed.
