The Lions have promoted Geronimo Allison from the practice squad to the active roster. The wide receiver will be eligible to play this week against the Rams with an opportunity to notch his first reception since 2019.

Allison showed promise with the Packers – particularly in the first quarter of 2018 when he recorded 19 catches for 289 yards and a touchdown. In 2o19, he was expected to take on a larger role, but the 6’3″, 202-pound target struggled in the slot. He finished out with 34 catches for just 287 yards and two scores, despite playing in all 16 games.

He hooked on with the Lions in 2020, a one-year deal for the veteran’s minimum, but he opted out. That deal tolled into this year, when he missed Detroit’s final cut. Now that the Lions are without wide receiver Quintez Cephus, Allison will get a chance to show what he can do.

Geronimo Allison‘s bid to return to action after a 2020 opt-out decision is on hold. The Lions informed the veteran wide receiver he did not make their 53-man roster Tuesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL.com tweets.

The former Packers wideout will follow fellow veteran Breshad Perriman out the door in Detroit, which is going with Tyrell Williams and a host of young receivers. The Lions also acquired third-year wideout Trinity Benson from the Broncos on Tuesday morning.

An ex-UDFA, Allison served as a four-year Green Bay contributor. In 2019, he played in 16 games and made six starts. In four Green Bay slates, Allison totaled 89 catches for 1,045 yards and six touchdowns. The Lions signed him in March 2020 but will cut ties nearly 18 months later without the 27-year-old veteran having played in a regular-season game.

Detroit has revamped its receiving corps considerably this offseason, to go along with its Matthew Stafford-for-Jared Goff swap. Goff’s weaponry will enter the season as one of the league’s lowest-profile receiving groups.

That is a far cry from what Allison was probably anticipating this time last year, as he entered the 2019 campaign in line for an expanded role in Green Bay’s receiving corps. He opened 2018 with a bang, catching 19 passes for 289 yards and a score through the first quarter of the year, but a concussion and a core muscle injury limited him to just one game the rest of the way.

Still, the Packers thought enough of his potential — and Allison was generating enough interest from other teams — that the club signed him to a one-year deal last March after initially placing an original-round RFA tender on him. But Green Bay tried to use the 6-3, 202-pounder in the slot in 2019, and that simply didn’t work. He appeared in all 16 games but caught just 34 passes for 287 yards and two TDs.

The division-rival Lions have seen a good deal of Allison over his first four years in the league and apparently like his potential. The top of Detroit’s depth chart is set with Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones on the boundaries and Danny Amendola in the slot, but Michael Rothstein of ESPN.com says Allison will likely push Marvin Hall for the No. 4 WR job.

Of course, the Lions could also draft a wideout from a very deep WR class. But Allison is a good low-risk, high-reward addition who became yet another victim of a very tough FA market for receivers.
