Sunday NFL Transactions: AFC North

Listed below are the Sunday roster moves for the four AFC North teams. Following the 53-man roster cutdown deadline yesterday, many teams will make slight tweaks to their rosters, claiming players off waivers or signing guys who clear waivers. Those transactions for the Ravens, Bengals, Browns, and Steelers are noted below.

Additionally, as of 12:00pm CT today, teams can begin constructing their 10-man practice squads. You can check out our glossary entry on practice squads to brush up on those changes, as well as all the other guidelines that govern the 10-man units, whose players practice with the team but aren’t eligible to suit up on Sundays.

Here are Sunday’s AFC North transactions, which will continue to be updated throughout the day. All links go to Twitter unless otherwise noted:

Workout Notes: Jets, Brown, Chargers, Lions

The Jets auditioned running back Bryce Brown on Tuesday, according to ESPN.com’s Field Yates (on Twitter). Brown has showed flashes of promise in the past, but he was unable to stick with the Bills in 2015. The Bills traded a 2015 fourth-round pick to the Eagles to acquire Brown before the start of last season and that’s a deal that GM Doug Whaley probably wouldn’t make again. In 2014, Brown ran for a grand total of 126 yards off of 36 carries.

AFC Practice Squad Updates: 9/7/15

While many teams filled up their 10-man practice squads on Sunday, plenty of teams didn’t confirm their moves right away, or kept a few spots open on those units. Raiders’ Roster Takes Shape

Despite surpassing Trent Richardson on the depth chart, Michael Dyer couldn’t complete his ascent into regular-season action with the Raiders.

Instead, Oakland rejiggered its depth chart by bringing Taiwan Jones, a former running back, back to his original spot from corner, where he played previously. Jones now occupies the third-string spot behind Latavius Murray and Roy Helu, as the Raiders announced the waiving of Dyer and others in order to dice their roster down to 53.

In addition to severing ties with Christian Ponder, Oakland released Kris Durham and defensive lineman C.J. Wilson.

Here are the rest of Oakland’s cut-day casualties:

  • George Atkinson III, RB
  • Mitch Bell, G
  • Spencer Hadley, LB
  • Shelby Harris, DE
  • Dan Kistler, T
  • Brian Leonhardt, TE
  • Ricky Lumpkin, DT
  • Tevin McDonald, CB
  • Anthony Morris, T (Waived/injured)
  • Leon Orr, DT
  • Brandian Ross, S (IR)
  • Josh Shirley, LB
  • Georgio Tavecchio, K
  • Max Valles, DE
  • Gary Wilkins, DE
  • Devon Wylie, WR

Raiders Place Carlos Rogers on IR

The Raiders announced (via Twitter) that they have placed cornerback Carlos Rogers on the injured reserve, ending the veteran’s season. The 33-year-old hadn’t played since the end of October as he tried to recover from a knee injury. To take his place on the roster, the team promoted running back George Atkinson III to the active roster.

Rogers joined the Raiders this offseason after being cut by the 49ers, signing a one-year deal worth $2.5MM, including a $1MM signing bonus. The former Auburn standout was selected ninth-overall by Washington in the 2005 draft, where he spent six seasons with the squad. The defensive back joined San Francisco prior to the 2011 season, and he started every game during his three-year tenure.

However, following his Pro Bowl appearance in 2011, Rogers production has decreased. He ranked as Pro Football Focus’ (subscription required) sixth-best corner in the league following his first season with the Niners, but he soon fell to the middle of the pack in 2012 and 2013. In his abbreviated 2014 season with Oakland, he ranked 77th among 112 eligible cornerbacks, compiling 35 tackles and two passes defended in seven games.

Atkinson joined the Raiders this offseason after going undrafted out of Notre Dame. Steve Corkran of the Contra Costa Times expects the rookie to return kicks this weekend against the Rams (Twitter link).
