Jets To Activate TE Chris Herndon

Chris Herndon may be in line to finally make his 2019 debut. The Jets activated the tight end Monday, Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News tweets. The team waived linebacker Frankie Luvu.

Suspended for four games to start the season, Herndon experienced hamstring discomfort last week. That led to the Jets keeping him off their active roster. Now that Herndon is back on their 53-man squad, he stands to soon reclaim his starting tight end post.

Although it’s not a lock Herndon makes his sophomore-season debut next week, due to the uncertainty surrounding his injury, Adam Gase hopes he will practice in the lead-up to the Jets’ rematch with the Patriots. Herndon’s roster exemption expired today. The Jets and Patriots have the New Jersey leg of their season series on tap for next Monday. The home team is a 9.5-point underdog.

Herndon caught 39 passes for 502 yards and four touchdowns as a rookie, doing so despite being a fourth-round pick. That yardage total was third-most in Jets history for a rookie tight end, trailing Pete Lammons (1966) and Dustin Keller (2008).

Jets Tender Robby Anderson

The Jets announced that they have applied the second-round tender to wide receiver Robby Anderson. The one-year tender will pay Anderson $3.095MM for the upcoming season.

As a restricted free agent, Anderson can negotiate with any club through April 19. If he signs an offer sheet with a new club, the Jets could match the offer to keep him. If the Jets do not match such an offer, they will receive a second-round draft choice. While Anderson has talent, it seems unlikely that a team will offer him substantial money and forfeit a valuable second-round pick in order to add him.

Anderson, 26 in May, made some noise in 2017 with 63 catches for 941 yards and seven touchdowns. He had a quieter year in 2018, even as his off-the-field antics made noise in the New York tabloids. He finished out last season with a 50/752/6 stat line across 14 games. With upwards of $100MM in cap room – and even more flexibility remaining – the Jets can easily afford to keep Anderson in the fold at a ~$3MM rate.

In addition to Anderson, the Jets have also retained all nine of their exclusive-rights free agents:

Sunday NFL Transactions: AFC East

Listed below are the Sunday roster moves for the four AFC East teams. Following the 53-man roster cutdown deadline yesterday, many teams will make slight tweaks to their rosters, claiming players off waivers or signing guys who clear waivers. Those transactions for the Bills, Dolphins, Patriots, and Jets are noted below.

Additionally, as of 12:00pm CT today, teams can begin constructing their 10-man practice squads. You can check out our glossary entry on practice squads to brush up on those changes, as well as all the other guidelines that govern the 10-man units, whose players practice with the team but aren’t eligible to suit up on Sundays.

Here are Sunday’s AFC East transactions, which will continue to be updated throughout the day:

Jets Cut Thomas Rawls, Charcandick West

The Jets have become the latest team to move to 53 players, and did so by making the following transactions:

Released:

Placed on suspended list:

Placed on PUP:

Rawls, 25, first entered the league as an undrafted free agent in 2015 with the Seahawks and broke out immediately when Marshawn Lynch was sidelined with an abdomen injury. In his very first start for Seattle, Rawls amassed 104 yards off of 16 carries and later turned in a 209-yard game. Things trailed off after that, however. He missed significant time in 2016 with a fractured fibula and became an afterthought in 2017. Rawls initially seemed to have a good chance at making the Jets’ roster in 2018, but he was unable to find a place behind top RBs Isaiah Crowell and Bilal Powell.

West was also fighting for a supporting RB job, and his limited highlight reel with the Chiefs suggested that he had a puncher’s chance to make the roster. West missed most of KC’s camp this year with a concussion and hooked on with the Jets a little over one week ago. Crowell also missed time with a concussion and reserve Elijah McGuire was dealing with a broken foot, but West still couldn’t make enough of an impression on coaches in such a short period of time.
