Today’s minor moves:
The Cardinals have reached an injury settlement with cornerback Alan Ball and released him from their roster, according to Josh Weinfuss of ESPN.com. Arizona has also placed fellow corner Elie Bouka on injured reserve, so the Cards’ roster now sits at 75.
The 31-year-old Ball just signed with Arizona earlier this month. Ball, who was teammates with Jenkins in Dallas from 2008-11, entered the league as a seventh-round pick in 2007. In addition to the Cowboys and Bears, he has seen action with the Texans and Jaguars. All told, Ball has accrued 108 appearances (47 starts) and six interceptions. He appeared in 15 games, made three starts and totaled 18 tackles last season.
The Cardinals had already lost another defensive back — veteran Mike Jenkins — for the season, as he tore his ACL over the weekend.
The Cardinals supplemented their six-man draft class today by agreeing to sign 16 undrafted free agents, as Darren Urban of AZCardinals.com details. General manager Steve Keim is optimistic about the potential impact of the team’s newest additions.
“We’re excited about it, because we still have a number of guys that we like, that we think have an opportunity to make this football team,” Keim said of the UDFAs. “You look at the past history of this organization, we’ve had guys make significant contributions, whether it’s been Lyle Sendlein or a Jaron Brown, they can be the difference of you winning football games or not. Not only do our coaches do a great job, our scouts, they work together and they call and they recruit these guys extremely well.”
Here’s the full list of the 16 UDFAs who agreed to sign in Arizona:
The Seahawks and the newly reacquired Brandon Browner set in motion Sunday’s signing with a back-and-forth negotiation that lasted “a while,” Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times reports.
Seattle entered Sunday with $5.6MM in cap space, although terms of Browner’s deal with the Seahawks haven’t been disclosed. Browner’s agent tells Condotta the Seahawks were priced out of Browner’s negotiations after their Super Bowl XLVIII victory, and the veteran went on to spend 2014 with the Patriots and 2015 with the Saints.
“That was more of a (salary) cap issue,” Peter Schaffer told Condotta. “Brandon was going to get more money then they had. … it wasn’t like ‘we don’t want him back’ but like ‘shoot, if you are going to get that kind of money there’s no way we can afford him.”
The Pats ended up signing Browner, who will turn 32 in August, to a three-year, $12.35MM contract. This one-year pact with the Seahawks won’t be as pricey, especially after the Saints released Browner earlier this offseason. Pro Football Focus’ worst full-time corner in 2015, Browner revealed last month he’d played last season on a torn meniscus. Schaffer said Browner will be healthy for the ’16 season, and the Seahawks saw value in a healthy Browner coming off a down year.
Here’s some more from the teams out west, beginning with an unlikely pre-draft visit.
