Today’s workout updates are below. There were some notable names, including veteran quarterback Landry Jones, who was released by the Steelers at final cuts.

Colts Meet With WR Dontrelle Inman

The Colts hosted free agent WR Dontrelle Inman on a visit, Field Yates of ESPN.com tweets. New Colts OC Nick Sirianni was Inman’s WR coach in Los Angeles.

The Cowboys also have interest in Inman, so there’s a market for him despite a strange year 2017. Inman slid down the Chargers’ depth chart and was traded to the Bears during the year. After doing little in Los Angeles, he caught 23 passes for 334 with one touchdown in eight games. He finished out third in catches and receiving yards amongst Bears players, despite having just half a season with the team.

In 2016, Inman had the best year of his career with 58 grabs for 810 yards and four TDs. The potential is there for him to be an impact player and he’s still just 29 years old.

The Colts have ten wide receivers under contract, but T.Y. Hilton and free agent pickup Ryan Grant are the only real notables of the bunch.

Cowboys To Host WR Allen Hurns

The Cowboys will meet with free agent wide receiver Allen Hurns, according to Josina Anderson of ESPN.com (Twitter link). Hurns’ visit with Dallas will take place ahead of his summit with the Jets, as weather elements are keeping Hurns out of New York.

Dallas has yet to make major additions on either side of the ball (in fact, the club’s only offseason transaction was re-signing its long snapper), but it clearly wants to address its receiving corps. While the Cowboys have yet to make a decision on veteran Dez Bryant‘s fate, Jerry Jones & Co. reportedly made a push for Sammy Watkins before he signed with the Chiefs, and also expressed interest in complementary pass-catchers such as Deonte Thompson.

Hurns, 26, was excellent as Jacksonville’s No. 2 wide receiver in 2015, putting up 10 touchdowns behind top pass-catcher Allen Robinson. The former undrafted free agent landed a four-year, $40MM deal following that campaign, but Hurns only made it through two years before being released. A number of clubs, including the Bears, Bills, Saints, Texans, Jets, Raiders, and Panthers have also expressed interest in Hurns.

The Cowboys are searching for more weapons for quarterback Dak Prescott after Terrance Williams flopped in the first year of his new four year-deal. With Bryant seemingly on the roster for now, Dallas needs a quality No. 2 receiver. To that end, the Cowboys were also expected to meet with free agents Dontrelle Inman and Justin Hunter, according to Todd Archer of ESPN.com.

Inman, 29, broke out for 58 receptions and 810 yards with the Chargers in 2016, but he tumbled down the team’s depth chart following the return of a healthy Keenan Allen. Los Angeles shipped Inman to the Bears at mid-season for a conditional seventh-round pick, and he went to finish third among Chicago wideouts in receptions (23) and yards (334).

Hunter, meanwhile, wouldn’t qualify as any more than a No. 5 receiver, as he’s managed just 14 total receptions with three different teams over the past two years. Ideally, a back-end wideout such as Hunter would offer special teams value, but the former second-round pick has played only four special teams snaps during his six-year career.

Trade Notes: Garoppolo, Benjamin, Dareus

With the trade deadline behind us, NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero provided some insight into the completed deals. Notably, the writer discussed the 49ers–Patriots trade involving quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. While he initially opined that New England should have gotten a bigger return for the signal-caller, he started to see the logic after talking to league executives.

As Pelissero explains, the team surely would have gotten a lesser return had they franchised Garoppolo and then traded him. Alternatively, had the quarterback departed via free agency, the team would have simply acquired a compensatory pick in the third round.

“They kept the insurance policy,” said an NFL executive. “The risk was greater back in April. It’s less now. And it’s also the deadline. This was their last chance to get the best that they can. … Now, they’re halfway through the season. They know they’re going to lose the player. If they lose the player, even if it’s one of the most outrageous contracts in history, the best they can get is a compensatory third.”

Of course, these executives also touted the 49ers for prying the young quarterback away from New England.

“I give credit to San Francisco,” said one GM, “because in the offseason, four or five teams called (the Patriots) and they said, ‘Absolutely not. No way.’ “

Let’s take a look at some more notes from Pelissero regarding the trade deadline…

  • The Chargers had been shopping wideout Dontrelle Inman since training camp, but they couldn’t find a partner before completing a deal with the Bears.
  • The Marcell Dareus trade was simply a cap dump, with Pelissero noting that the defensive tackle had worn out his welcome among Bills teammates and the coaching staff. However, the Jaguars were seemingly willing to take the risk since his former coach, Doug Marrone, “could vouch for him.”
  • Interim GM Marty Hurney only talked to the Bills before dealing wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin. The Panthers were looking to get more speed on the field, and they weren’t planning on extending Benjamin.
  • A.J. McCarron‘s future will depend on a pending grievance regarding his free agency status. The Bengals backup quarterback is arguing that he should be an unrestricted free agent, but time spent on the NFI list could earn him the restricted tag. Cincinnati had a deal in place with the Browns for the quarterback, but the trade was rejected by the NFL.

Chargers Trade WR Dontrelle Inman To Bears

The Chargers have traded wide receiver Dontrelle Inman to the Bears, sources tell ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter (on Twitter). Los Angeles will receive a conditional seventh-round pick in the deal, based on Inman production this season. Dontrelle Inman

On Sunday against the Panthers, Mitch Trubisky completed just four passes out of seven attempts. The Bears have multiple issues to address on offense, and that includes a lack of receiving weapons. Enter Inman, a pass-catcher with experience who has not seen a ton of action so far in 2017.

Inman has been with the Bolts for the last four seasons following a post-college stint in the CFL. The 28-year-old had a breakout campaign in 2016, with career-highs in receptions (58), receiving yards (810), and touchdowns (four).

Despite that performance, he slipped in the Chargers’ pecking order this year thanks to the re-emergence of Keenan Allen and a lingering hamstring injury. Hamstring issue aside, there wasn’t a clear path for Inman’s usage to improve now that first-round pick Mike Williams is with the team. The Bolts saw this coming, which is why they first started shopping Inman over the summer.

Top receivers Kevin White and Cameron Meredith have both landed on IR with major injuries. Markus Wheaton, meanwhile, is out through at least Week 9 with a strained groin. Given the lack of options in Chicago, Inman could slot in as the Bears’ WR2 behind Kendall Wright and ahead of Josh Bellamy, Tre McBride, and Tanner Gentry.

Inman has extra incentive to produce as he approaches unrestricted free agency. In the interim, he’s playing on the one-year, $2.746MM deal he received as a restricted free agent tendered at the second-round level.

The trade deadline is on Oct. 31. We’ve been seeing more trades than ever in the NFL, so this could be an eventful week.

Chargers Consider Dontrelle Inman Trade

Inman has been with the Bolts for the last three seasons following a post-college stint in the CFL. The 28-year-old has a breakout campaign in 2016, with career-highs in receptions (58), receiving yards (810), and touchdowns (four). Despite that performance, it appears he has slipped in the Chargers’ pecking order.

Per the terms of his second-round tender, Inman is set to earn a non-guaranteed $2.797MM base salary for the coming season. If the Chargers do not find a taker for Inman and would rather use his roster spot on someone else, they could release him without financial penalty.

Keenan Allen, Tyrell Williams, and Travis Benjamin figure to see the most looks out of Los Angeles’ wide receivers this year. Inman, Isaiah Burse, Geremy Davis, and UDFA Artavis Scott are jostling for supporting roles while first-round rookie Mike Williams looks to recover from his back injury.

Jermaine Kearse of the Seahawks is also among the wide receivers on the trade block.

Chargers wideout Dontrelle Inman is set to miss some time. According to ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter (via Twitter), the receiver underwent core muscle surgery and is expected to be out for six weeks. This is relatively good news for the organization, as Inman should be healthy in time for training camp.

Dontrelle InmanInman toiled in the Canadian Football League after going undrafted out of Virginia in 2011, but he’s seemingly found a home with the Chargers, where he’s spent the past three seasons. The 28-year-old has a breakout campaign in 2016, hauling in career-highs in receptions (58), receiving yards (810), and touchdowns (four). Earlier this offseason, Inman signed his second-round tender assigned by the Chargers, meaning he’s set to earn a non-guaranteed $2.797MM base salary for the 2017 season. Next offseason, the wideout will be an unrestricted free agent.

Fortunately for Los Angeles, the team has plenty of depth at wide receiver, so they should be able to make up for Inman’s absence if he’s out longer than expected. With Keenan Allen and rookie Mike Williams presumably atop the depth chart, Inman will be competing with Tyrell Williams and Travis Benjamin to be the team’s third receiver.

Minor NFL Transactions: 4/25/17

Today’s minor move:

  • Restricted free agent wide receiver Dontrelle Inman has signed his second-round tender, the Chargers announced today. Inman will now earn a non-guaranteed $2.797MM base salary for the 2017 campaign. The 28-year-old former undrafted free agent broke out last season, catching 58 balls, 810 yards, and four touchdowns from quarterback Philip Rivers. Inman will return to a Los Angeles wideout corps that includes Keenan Allen, Tyrell Williams, and Travis Benjamin.
  • The Lions have signed free agent punter Kasey Redfern, according to a team announcement. Redfern, 25, was sent to the Browns last August as part of the Panthers’ Andy Lee acquisition, but didn’t end up making Cleveland’s final roster. A Wofford alum, Redfern has bounced around the NFL since entering the league in 2014, but has yet to appear in a pro contest. Detroit signed punter Sam Martin to a four-year extension in September, so Redfern won’t act as anything more than a camp body in the Motor City.
