Redskins Cut 10 UDFAs

In preparation for the first of the two roster-cutdown deadlines, this one moving teams from 90 to 75 players, the Redskins waived 10 today, via Zac Jackson of Pro Football Talk.

Here’s who Washington cut today:

  • T Cody Booth
  • LB Shiro Davis
  • LB Ejiro Ederaine
  • CB Jeremy Harris
  • LB Willie Jefferson
  • RB Kelsey Young
  • WR Valdez Showers
  • WR Dez Stewart
  • WR Jarvis Turner

UDFAs from over the past two years comprise this class. Jefferson, though, made his NFL debut in 2013 with the Texans and played in six games that year. Harris played in seven games in 2014-15, suiting up for six with the ’14 Jaguars and one with Washington last year.

Redskins Sign WR Dez Stewart

Following a tryout earlier today, the Redskins have signed free agent wide receiver Dez Stewart, according to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle (Twitter link). Washington has since confirmed the transaction.Redskins Helmet (Vertical)

Stewart was evidently a part of a morning Redskins workout session that included quarterback Jimmy Clausen and wide receiver Marlon Brown. Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reported that other pass-catchers were involved in the tryout, and given that Stewart was signed to a contract, Brown (and the other receivers present) might be out of luck. Washington, which now has a full 90-man offseason roster, already has a well-stocked group of receivers, as Roster Resource shows the club boasting DeSean Jackson, Pierre Garcon, Jamison Crowder, first-round pick Josh Doctson, and others on its depth chart.

An undrafted free agent out of Ohio Dominican, Stewart signed with the Buccaneers in May, only to be placed on injured reserve shortly thereafter — he was waived off IR in early June. The 6’2″, 200-pound Stewart accumulated more than 3,000 receiving yards and 25 touchdowns across 40 career collegiate games, and also excelled as a kick returner, a role he might need to play to earn a spot on the Redskins’ roster.

Meanwhile, Mike Jones of the Washington Post tweets that Clausen’s presence at the workout shoudn’t raise any eyebrows, as the former second-round pick was simply in attendance to throw passes. However, Clausen is on Washington’s emergency list should something happen to one of their current quarterbacks, a list that includes Kirk Cousins, Colt McCoy, and Zach Sudfeld.

Minor NFL Transactions: 6/8/16

Today’s minor moves:

  • The Redskins parted ways with tight end Michael Cooper, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports (on Twitter). Cooper made 19 career catches with the Hoosiers from 2012-15.
  • Following the Panthers‘ signing of Mike Scifres on Tuesday, the team cut punter Michael Palardy, Wilson tweets. A UDFA in 2014, Palardy spent time with the Raiders and Panthers in his career.
  • The Buccaneers waived rookie UDFA wideout Dez Stewart off their injury reserve with a likely injury settlement, Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times reports (on Twitter).
  • The Cowboys announced that they have signed former Olympian (and hopeful defensive lineman) Lawrence Okoye. In addition to the former discus athlete, Dallas signed linebacker Brandon Hepburn and tackle Bryan Witzmann, Wilson tweets. To make room, defensive end Caleb Azubike, linebacker Jerrell Harris and tackle Justin Renfrow were waived, Wilson tweets. A former Lions seventh-round pick in 2013, Hepburn has not seen action in a game but spent time with the Lions and Eagles in the past three years. He resided on Philadelphia’s IR in 2015. Okoye represented Great Britain in the 2012 London Summer Games, advancing to the event’s final round and finishing 12th.
  • The Steelers cut pass-rusher Kevin Anderson and signed linebacker Mike Reilly, Wilson tweets. Originally a UDFA with the Browns in 2015, Reilly didn’t make the roster out of training camp and signed a subsequent reserve/futures deal with the Cardinals at this year’s outset. However, the Cards released him in May after signing its new crop of UDFAs.

Minor NFL Transactions: 5/11/16

Here are Wednesday’s minor signings, cuts, and other transactions from across the NFL:

  • The Buccaneers have claimed safety Johnny Lowdermilk off waivers from the Vikings, as Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times tweets. The team also waived rookie safety Traveon Henry and rookie wide receiver Dez Stewart (injured).
  • The Bengals made a minor change at the back of their 90-man roster, signing former Louisville offensive tackle Aaron Epps and waiving tackle Darryl Baldwin, per Coley Harvey of ESPN.com (Twitter link). Baldwin was an undrafted free agent in 2015 who has yet to appear in a regular-season NFL game, while Epps tried out for Cincinnati after going undrafted this year. Epps, who stands at 6’7″ and weighs 288 pounds, was a part-time starter at Louisville in 2014 and 2015. He started only 14 contests across his collegiate career.
  • After cutting former South Florida edge defender Eric Lee earlier this week, the Texans are expected to re-sign him today, tweets Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times. As Auman explains, the club wanted to change some language in Lee’s contract.
  • The Buccaneers signed receiver Freddie Martino, as Adam Caplan of ESPN.com tweets.
  • The Rams signed cornerback Jabriel Washington and released wide receiver Nick Toon and defensive back Winston Rose, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com tweets.
  • Linebacker Uani Unga, waived yesterday by the Giants, cleared waivers and was added to the Giants’ injured reserve list, as Ralph Vacchiano of the Daily News tweets.
  • Mike McFarland reverted to the Colts‘ IR after being waived-injured and clearing waivers (Twitter link via Aaron Wilson of The Houston Chronicle).
  • The Packers have reached an injury settlement with tight end David Grinnage, who was signed as a rookie free agent (Twitter link via Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com).
  • The Patriots have cut linebacker Tony Steward, leaving them with an open roster spot, as Mark Daniels of the Providence Journal tweets.
