WFT Signs TE Deon Yelder, CB Linden Stephens

The Washington Football Team added a pair of veterans today. The team announced this evening that they’ve signed tight end Deon Yelder and cornerback Linden Stephens.

Yelder is the notable name in this grouping, as the tight end appeared in 26 games for the Chiefs over the past three seasons. This included a 2020 campaign where he set career-highs across the board, including games played (14), receptions (seven), receiving yards (36), and offensive snaps (194). He also has four playoff games (including three in 2019) and a Super Bowl ring on his resume.

Logan Thomas sits atop the depth chart in Washington, meaning Yelder will end up battling with the likes of Temarrick Hemingway, John Bates, Marcus Baugh, Tyrone Swoopes, and Sammis Reyes for backup reps.

Stephens has bounced around the NFL since going undrafted out of Cincinnati in 2018, spending time with the Saints, Rams, Broncos, Seahawks, Dolphins, and Seahawks (second stint). He saw time in 13 games for Seattle last season, appearing mostly on special teams.

RFA/ERFA Tender Decisions: 3/14/21

Teams have until March 17 to extend tender offers to their restricted free agents and exclusive rights free agents. Some teams are already making their calls in advance of March 17. We’ll keep tabs on the latest here:

Non-Tendered:

Both of these guys will now be hitting unrestricted free agency. Yelder signed with the Saints as an UDFA in 2018, and was added to the Chiefs’ practice squad later that year. He got meaningful playing time in 2020, mostly as a blocker, playing around 18 percent of the offensive snaps for Kansas City last season. He had only seven catches for 36 yards.

Ford was drafted by the Dolphins in the seventh-round back in 2017, then was traded to the Patriots this past November but quickly re-signed by Miami after New England cut him a month later. This one is mildly surprising since Ford played a real role on offense for the Dolphins the past two years, catching 51 passes for 520 yards in 18 games between 2019-20.

Chiefs Place C Jordan Devey On IR

The Chiefs placed center Jordan Devey and linebacker Terrance Smith on injured reserve. In related moves, the club promoted center Jimmy Murray and tight end Deon Yelder from the practice squad to the active roster.

Devey has been starting at center for the last two weeks in place of the injured Mitch Morse, so his loss is no small matter for Kansas City. If Morse is unable to play on Sunday, the Chiefs may have to shift Cameron Erving to the middle and move the recently-signed Jeff Allen into the starting left guard spot. Murray gives the Chiefs another option at center, but the UDFA has yet to play his first NFL down.

The Chiefs and their banged up offensive line will face the Broncos in Week 8.
