NFC Notes: Ingram, Breaux, Peterson, Eagles

History is not on the side of Saints running back Mark Ingram as he approaches free agency, Katherine Terrell of The Times-Picayune writes. The league has devalued running backs in the last four years: they’ve gone off the board later in each draft since 2011 and teams are hesitant to pay out big bucks for a position that is believed to have a short shelf life. Ingram says the Saints want him back he claims the feeling is mutual, but it remains to be seen if they’ll pay big bucks to keep him. It also doesn’t help that Ingram has a lengthy injury history.   • Delvin Breaux‘s contract with the Saints contains a partial guarantee of $138K in 2015, according to Evan Woodbery of The Times-Picayune. Breaux’s contract includes the league minimum base salary in each of the three years. After Breaux’s signing, the Saints now have 60 players under contract for 2015. Of the 15 unsigned players on the 2014 squad, eleven are unrestricted free agents, three are restricted free agents, and one is an exclusive-rights free agent.
  • The Star Tribune’s Mark Craig discussed Adrian Peterson‘s future with the Vikings. The embattled running back is under contract with Minnesota for 2015, but many have speculated that he could be traded.
  • After whiffing on a number of candidates, Eagles coach Chip Kelly got his man in Ed Marynowitz to fill the team’s front office vacancy. Now, Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer wonders if Marynowitz will be a yes man or partner in personnel.

Saints Sign Delvin Breaux

MONDAY, 3:51pm: Breaux officially signed his contract with the Saints today, his agent tells Adam Caplan of ESPN.com (Twitter link).

SATURDAY, 3:04pm: The Saints have reached an agreement with CFL star Delvin Breaux to help improve their secondary in 2015, reports Adam Schefter of ESPN (via Twitter). Schefter writes that the standout cornerback worked out for 13 NFL teams before agreeing with the Saints.

CFL players cannot sign with NFL teams until after February 10, according to Evan Woodbery of NOLA.com (via Twitter). However, Woodbery writes that the Hamilton Tiger-Cats have agreed to release Breaux, which would allow him to sign with the team immediately (via Twitter).

Woodbery highlights one of his Twitter followers who notes that this is a similar situation to when the Steelers signed Shawn Lemon (via Twitter).

Breaux is a native of New Orleans, suffering a neck injury at McDonogh 35 High School that resulted in him not being medically cleared to play college football at LSU. He should challenge for a starting spot across from Keenan Lewis on Rob Ryan’s defense, writes Woodbery.

NFC South Notes: Saints, Ingram, Falcons

The Saints’ ownership situation has officially turned ugly — after learning last night that owner Tom Benson had transferred ownership of the Saints (and the NBA’s Pelicans) after he dies to his wife, Gayle, his granddaughter, Rita Benson LeBlanc, has filed a lawsuit, claiming Benson is mentally incompetent and is being manipulated by his wife, according to the Times-Picayune, who provide a copy of the suit in PDF form. Benson himself has responded to the suit, tweets Mike Triplett of ESPN.com: “The false accusations in this suit further support the actions I have taken in changing the succession and transfer of ownership.” It’s a sad situation, but one that has on-the-field implications, as Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com notes (Twitter links) that GM Mickey Loomis and head coach Sean Payton’s jobs would have been in jeopardy had LeBlanc taken over; the duo reportedly has much better relationship with the new designee, Gayle.   • Along with DeMarco Murray, Saints running Mark Ingram will be at the top of the free agent running back class, but his preference is to remain in New Orleans, writes Katherine Terrell of the Times-Picayune. “I want to be a Saint. I was drafted there. I’m always appreciative and grateful for that,” said Ingram. “…Of course there’s always that ‘what if you go somewhere and you could be the main guy and do everything’, but I love the Saints and want to be a Saint.” Ingram indicated that he hadn’t spoken with team representatives since his end-of-season meeting, but said club officials told him at that time they’d like to retain him.
  • CFL free agent Delvin Breaux will audition for the Saints on Friday, according to Evan Woodbery of the Times-Picayune. Breaux, a New Orleans native, isn’t eligible to sign with an NFL team until February 10, like all CFL players.
  • Jason Fitzgerald of Over the Cap examines the Saints’ 2015 cap situation — he projects them to be roughly $25MM in the red heading into the offseason, and suggest they could release veterans Jahri Evans and Curtis Lofton to save cap space.
  • The Falcons are right to wait on Seattle defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, opines Field Yates of ESPN (Insider subscription required). Quinn will make good use of the Atlanta’s talented young corners, writes Yates, but the club will need to find a impact pass-rusher and depth along the defensive line.

Audition Notes: Friday

Duron Carter is among the busier men in the NFL right now, as the CFL receiver has worked out for a litany of teams over recent weeks in an effort to secure a contract for 2015. According to Ben Goessling of ESPN.com (Twitter link), Carter has is likely finished with the audition circuit after visiting with the Browns earlier today. And despite earlier reports that the Vikings, home to Duron’s father Cris Carter for much of his career, were the favorites to land the young receiver, Goessling reports that Minnesota is the not high bidder for Carter at the moment. Here’s more workout news from around the league…

  • Carter isn’t the only CFL player making the NFL rounds, as defensive back Delvin Breaux met with both the Steelers (Twitter link via Howard Balzer) and the Jaguars (Twitter link via Adam Caplan of ESPN). Per Caplan (on Twitter), Breaux has several more visits lined up, and is scheduled to meet with the Browns, Dolphins, Falcons, and Saints, while the Eagles and Jets also maintain interest.
  • The Panthers brought in quarterback Dominique Davis for a workout, tweets Caplan. Davis, 25, was a reserve for the Falcons from 2012-13, and spent time with the Titans and Colts last season.
  • The Titans, like all teams, are aiming to fill out their offseason roster, and worked out the following players today in that vein, according to Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun (Twitter link): LaVon Brazill, David Fluellen, Jacoby Ford, Clyde Gates, Phillip Hunt, Shawn Lemon, Joe Morgan, Keith Price, and Chase Rettig. Brazill is probably the most notable name among the list, as he was set to play a meaningful role in the Colts’ offense before being suspended and migrating to the CFL.
  • Before signing Mitchell Van Dyk yesterday, the Steelers also worked out fellow punters Tom Hornsey and Richie Leone, in addition to defensive tackle Kheeston Randall, per Wilson (via Twitter).
  • The Bills auditioned offensive lineman Matt Armstrong today, tweets Wilson.

Extra Points: Peterson, Broncos, Fox, Tryouts

Vikings general manager Rick Spielman made it clear earlier today that he wants Adrian Peterson on his squad next season, writes Mark Craig of the Star Tribune.

“I don’t know if there’s a team in the NFL that wouldn’t want Adrian Peterson on the football team. If you can name me one. And I don’t want to speak for other teams. I’m being a little sarcastic with that. But I know he’s a pretty good football player.”

However, as the writer points out, Spielman did not specify what would happen to the star running back when he’s eligible to be reinstated in April…

“I’ve known Adrian his whole career and what type of person Adrian is. But I also know that we have to follow everything that’s put in place for us. Is there a resolution? Not right now. All I know is where we stand today. Does that change? I’m sure it’s going to change. Until those things change and get resolved, right now, we have Adrian Peterson, who is under contract for next year, who is currently suspended by the NFL. That’s pretty much all I can go into right now.”

  • Gary Kubiak is the wrong choice if Broncos GM John Elway wants a strong coach, writes Mark Kiszla of The Denver Post.
  • Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports believes if John Fox gets the head coaching job with the Bears, he’d bring along Dennis Allen and Kyle Shanahan as his coordinators (Twitter link).
  • CFL defensive back Delvin Breaux worked out for the Buccaneers and Jaguars this week, according to Howard Balzer of USA Today (via Twitter). Breaux has been a popular name in NFL circles and seems to have drawn some degree of interest from more than half the league.
  • Duron Carter met with the Panthers on Wednesday and will visit with the Browns on Thursday, according to Ben Goessling of ESPN.com (via Twitter).
  • Following his workout with the Giants last week, outside linebacker Phillip Hunt worked out for the Titans recently, tweets ESPN’s Adam Caplan.

Workout Notes: Saturday

We’ll keep track of today’s workout information right here, as well as a couple of notes from the past couple of days. All of the information below is via the Baltimore Sun’s Aaron Wilson on Twitter…

  • The Chiefs worked out wide receivers John Chiles and Cordell Roberson, cornerback Aaron Hester and defensive lineman Shawn Lemon.
  • The Chiefs also brought in defensive back Jalil Carter and wide receivers LaVon Brazill, Duron Carter and Joe Morgan. Brazill, a former sixth-round pick by the Colts, showed some flashes playing with Andrew Luck early in his career. Morgan was released by the Saints earlier this season, while Carter appears to have numerous suitors (with the Vikings seen as the favorite to sign him).
  • The Seahawks also brought in Lemon for a workout, and he joined quarterback Dominique Davis and cornerback Keon Lyn at the tryout. Wilson notes that defensive back Delvin Breaux was also brought in “for a visit.”
  • The Packers worked out CFL defensive back Jalil Carter. The former Akron standout briefly spend time with the Rams and in the AFL.
  • The Giants brought in five players for workouts: linebackers Terrance Bullitt and Phillip Hunt, safety Mistral Raymond, fullback Collin Mooney and tight end Michael Flacco.
  • The Steelers worked out a trio of offensive weapons: quarterback Aaron Smetanka, running back David Fluellen and wideout L’Damian Washington.

AFC Notes: Chargers, Roethlisberger, Ravens

The notion of the Rams moving west to Los Angeles gained some steam with this week’s announcement that Rams owner Stan Kroenke intends to build an NFL stadium in Inglewood. However, Jason Cole of Bleacher Report (Twitter link) says he was told Monday that Chargers owner Dean Spanos will attempt to block the Rams if they try to move to L.A., and believes he has the nine votes necessary to stop a move. We’re a long way from arriving at that point, but I’d be surprised if Kroenke attempted to move forward with a move if he didn’t believe he had the votes from ownership to approve it.

  • As they look to make additions to their offseason roster, the Chargers worked out two CFL players, offensive lineman Ben Heenan and defensive back Delvin Breaux, according to Field Yates of ESPN.com (Twitter link via ESPN’s Eric Williams). Heenan auditioned for the Lions on Saturday, while Breaux has now tried out for five clubs since December.
  • Asked about his contract status as he prepares to enter a contract year, Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said today that he’d like to get an extension done sooner rather than later, but he’ll leave that up to his agent and the Rooney family (Twitter links via Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette).
  • With New England and Baltimore prepared to square off in Saturday’s divisional playoff, Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com revisits the Ravens‘ offseason decision to pursue and sign Steve Smith rather than fellow free agent receiver Julian Edelman.
  • In an Insider-only piece for ESPN.com, Yates looks back on an offseason decision of his own, exploring the Bills‘ move to trade their 2015 first-rounder to move up and snag wideout Sammy Watkins. Recent reports have indicated former head coach Doug Marrone wasn’t too happy about that deal, and Yates concludes that Marrone was right to be upset.

Morning Notes: Tryouts, Browns, Ravens

As the Steelers and Lions prepare for their playoff contests this weekend, both organizations looked to solidify their depth, as the teams brought in players for workouts. Let’s see who was brought in for a tryout…

  • With star running back Le’Veon Bell out for this evening’s playoff matchup against the Ravens, the Steelers worked out back Roosevelt Nix, according to Aaron Wilson (via Twitter). The team also worked out defensive backs Alden Darby, Isaiah Lewis and Ian Wild.
  • The Lions had a pair of free agents come in for workouts, according to Wilson (via Twitter): offensive tackle Ben Heenan and defensive back Delvin Breaux.
  • The Dolphins‘ season may be over, but that doesn’t mean they’re not being active on the free agent front. According to Wilson (on Twitter), the team brought in guard Stetson Burnett for a workout.
  • The Browns have lifted the suspensions of receiver Josh Gordon and cornerback Justin Gilbert, tweets Wilson.
  • Wilson estimates that the Ravens could have about $5.785MM in cap space this offseason. That amount includes about $1.4MM that was subtracted following Ray Rice‘s filing of a grievance against the organization.

Lions star Ndamukong Suh has a chance of winning the appeal of his suspension, Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk writes. If Suh can win the appeal, he’ll be in action for Sunday’s playoff game against the Cowboys. While we wait to see how that plays out, let’s take a look at more news from around the NFL..

  • Discussing linebacker Lavonte David, Buccaneers GM Jason Licht said the team would “like to lock him up now,” tweets Roy Cummings of the Tampa Tribune, adding that negotiations on a new deal are underway. The 2012 second-round pick becomes extension-eligible this offseason for the first time.
  • The Bears announced today that they’ve hired former Giants general manager Ernie Accorsi as a consultant as the team searches for a new GM and head coach, tweets Ian Rapoport of NFL.com. Meanwhile, team president and CEO Ted Phillips confirmed today that besides offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer, whose contract was terminated, all of the other Bears assistants are still with the team (Twitter link). That includes defensive coordinator Mel Tucker.
  • Texas defensive tackle Malcom Brown and Arkansas defensive tackle Darius Philon may be playing their final college games tonight, according to Tony Pauline of DraftInsider.net (Twitter link), who says both players are leaning toward entering the 2015 draft. The two players’ teams square off in the Texas Bowl.
  • Former star NFL wideout Cris Carter indicated today (via Twitter) that his son, CFL receiver Duron Carter, will visit the Colts on January 5 and the Vikings on January 9.
  • According to Adam Caplan of ESPN.com (all Twitter links), Carter isn’t the only notable CFL player drawing significant NFL attention. Caplan reports that Hamilton Tiger-Cats cornerback Delvin Breaux has 18 teams interested in bringing him in for a visit and/or a workout, including the Eagles, Patriots, Texans, Jaguars, Dolphins, Cardinals, Steelers, Lions, 49ers, and Broncos.
  • Utah offensive lineman Jeremiah Poutasi announced that he will enter the 2015 draft, as Rand Getlin of Yahoo Sports tweets. Poutasi projects as a mid-round prospect.

  • The Jaguars worked three players, including former second-round pick Arrelious Benn, according to Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun (via Twitter). The team also worked out Tim McCornett and Chidera Uzo-Diribe.
  • The Raiders worked out former Saints’ receiver Joe Morgan earlier this week, but have also looked at Vernon Kearney and Marvin McNutt, reports Wilson (via Twitter).
  • The Dolphins tried out kicker Dustin Hopkins, reports Wilson (via Twitter)
  • The Falcons have worked out Lavelle Westbrooks, according to Wilson (via Twitter).
  • The Chiefs worked out Travis Chappalear, writes Wilson (via Twitter).
  • The Vikings worked out two players, Jordan McCray and Greg Van Roten, reports Wilson (via Twitter).
  • The Lions brought in Dejon Gomes for a workout, according to Wilson (via Twitter).
