Cardinals Release Darryl Sharpton

Darryl Sharpton‘s stint with the Cardinals lasted just three months, as the team announced today that it has released the veteran linebacker (Twitter link via Darren Urban of AZCardinals.com). Because he’s a vested veteran, Sharpton won’t have to pass through waivers before becoming a free agent.

In four years in Houston between 2010 and 2013, Sharpton, appeared in 42 games (19 starts), totaling 146 tackles as a part-time player for the Texans. The former fourth-round pick out of Miami joined the Bears last season, but played sparingly for the club, appearing in just 108 defensive snaps. Sharpton signed with the Cardinals in May in the hopes of providing some depth at linebacker for the team this season, but Arizona has opted not to hang onto him.

Following the release of Sharpton, the Cardinals have 89 players on their roster.

In search of some depth at inside linebacker, the Cardinals have signed veteran free agent Darryl Sharpton, tweets Adam Caplan of ESPN.com. According to Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic (via Twitter), the team waived safety Eddie Whitley to create room for the new addition to the roster.

Sharpton, 27, paid a visit to Arizona to meet with the Cardinals last week, as Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post detailed. The Cards added one linebacker, Markus Golden, in this year’s draft, but the rookie is expected to play on the edge, so it makes sense that the team would continue to add depth at inside linebacker, particularly with Larry Foote – currently a member of Arizona’s coaching staff – still undecided on his playing future.

  • The Packers have placed backup linebacker Jamari Lattimore on the injured reserve, tweets Fox Sports’ Mike Garafolo. The team will promote safety Chris Banjo from the practice squad to take the open roster space (also via Garafolo).
  • The Dolphins have promoted defensive back T.J. Heath, tweets Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald. The former Jacksonville State standout previously spent time with the Jaguars, Bengals, Bills and Browns.
  • The Seahawks have released cornerback Kennard Cox from their practice squad, tweets The Seattle Times’ Bob Condotta. Taking his place will be linebacker Allen Bradford, who was cut from the team’s active roster earlier this week.

Bears Sign Darryl Sharpton

THURSDAY, 10:44am: The Bears have confirmed the signing of Sharpton, announcing that fullback Tony Fiammetta has been removed from the roster with an injury settlement to clear space (Twitter link). Fiammetta re-injured his hamstring during the club’s Week 3 game against the Jets.

WEDNESDAY, 2:31pm: The Bears have signed linebacker Darryl Sharpton to a one-year deal, tweets Rand Getlin of Yahoo Sports. Sharpton last played for the Redskins.

The Redskins placed Sharpton on the injured reserve list this offseason before releasing him. Sharpton, 26, was expected to compete for an inside linebacker spot in Washington with Adam Hayward and Akeem Jordan but things didn’t pan out for the veteran thanks to his ankle injury.

Across the last four seasons, Sharpton has appeared in 42 games and made 19 starts for the Texans. He has 92 solo tackles and 54 assisted tackles to his credit during that time with four pass deflections, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery.

DeAngelo Hall Placed On IR With Torn Achilles

3:16pm: The Redskins have announced a series of roster moves: Hall and fellow defensive back Duke Ihenacho, who has a broken heel, have been placed on injured reserve; Minnifield has been promoted to the active roster; and linebacker Darryl Sharpton has been cut from the IR list with a settlement (Twitter link).

1:47pm: Minnifield will indeed be promoted to the 53-man roster from the practice squad to take Hall’s roster spot, Jones confirms (via Twitter).

12:37pm: The Redskins’ fears were confirmed today, according to Dianna Russini of NBC4 in Washington, who reports (via Twitter) that DeAngelo Hall suffered a torn Achilles in yesterday’s game, and will undergo surgery within the next few days. The veteran cornerback will miss the remainder of the 2014 season, Russini adds (via Twitter).

Hall, 30, avoided free agency back in February by signing a new four-year, $17MM deal with the Redskins. Only about a third of that money was guaranteed, so Washington won’t necessarily be obligated to keep Hall on the roster for the 2015 season, but I’d expect the cornerback to return to the team as long as his surgery and recovery goes well.

While Hall has yet to officially be placed on injured reserve, the team will open a roster spot when that move is finalized. According to Mike Jones of the Washington Post, the Redskins are leaning toward promoting cornerback Chase Minnifield from their practice squad to the active roster. However, Minnifield has yet to hear anything on that front (Twitter links).

For now, with Hall out, it appears Bashaud Breeland will be in line for a more significant role in Washington’s secondary.

NFC Notes: Rams, Redskins, Cowboys, Falcons

The upcoming season has long been targeted as the year the Rams will be legitimate contenders. Accordingly, the team has “margin for error next to zero in the NFL draft,” says ESPN.com’s Nick Wagoner. The Rams have been quiet in free agency, instead relying on the development of their young team and the potential to bolster the roster with draft picks, including two in the top 13, the first of which (No. 2 overall) is on the auction block. Wagoner asserts the time is now for the team to close the gap on Seattle and San Francisco, especially in the trenches. “…the most glaring difference between the Rams and their NFC West foes last year was how overmatched they were on the offensive line,” says Wagoner, who mentions tackles Greg Robinson (Auburn) and Jake Matthews (Texas A&M) as potential plug-and-play, impact options.

Other morning news and notes in the NFC:

  • The Redskins have signed three inside linebackers this offseason, but the linebacker corps isn’t settled yet, writes Mike Jones of the Washington Post: “The Redskins would like for [Perry] Riley to emerge as the leader of the defense, and become an extension of [defensive coordinator] Jim Haslett. But that could take some time. Riley led Washington in tackles last season, but he tended to disappear at times.” Meanwhile, the other inside linebacker spot is “up for grabs” with Adam Hayward, Akeem Jordan and Darryl Sharpton set to compete.
  • With Miles Austin out of the Cowboys’ plans, the team is open to adding a veteran receiver, writes ESPNDallas.com’s Calvin Watkins, who calls free agent Nate Burleson a “perfect fit.”
  • The Cardinals will look to add depth and size on defense in the draft, writes ESPN.com’s John Weinfuss. More specifically, the team is searching for a prospect to groom as Darnell Dockett‘s replacement, a taller, more athletic safety capable of matching with tight ends and another body at inside linebacker.
  • The Falcons, in desperate need of pass rush, will have a private workout with with UCLA rush linebacker Anthony Barr before the end of the month, according to ESPN.com’s Vaughn McClure. Barr could be an option for the No. 6 pick if South Carolina’s Jadaveon Clowney is off the board. Buffalo’s Khalil Mack could also fit the bill, but he does not have a visit scheduled with the Falcons as of Friday.
  • The Lions could have their pick of defensive backs with the 10th overall selection, speculates Dustin Hockensmith of pennlive.com.

Redskins Sign Darryl Sharpton

FRIDAY, 12:10pm: The Redskins have officially signed Sharpton, the team announced today. We passed along details on the contract earlier today.

THURSDAY, 1:39pm: The Redskins have agreed to a one-year contract with ex-Texans linebacker Darryl Sharpton, according to Pro Football Talk (via Twitter). Sharpton’s new deal can be worth up to $2MM.

Sharpton had a meeting planned with the Titans today but it appears that he’s already spoken for. The 26-year-old is coming off of his most impressive season to date. In 15 games (eight starts), Sharpton racked up two forced fumbles, two passes defended, and a career-best 55 tackles.

Contract Details: Pettigrew, Ginn, Clemens

Brandon Pettigrew agreed to a new four-year contract with the Lions today, and while $8MM of the $16MM total is guaranteed, $2.8MM of that amount, 2015’s base salary, is guaranteed for injury only, according to Tom Pelissero of USA Today. Pelissero adds that the rest of the guarantee comes from a $4MM signing bonus and a $1.2MM base salary for 2014 (Twitter links). Here are several more details on recent deals:

  • The three-year contract Ted Ginn Jr. agreed to with the Cardinals includes a $2.25MM signing bonus and $1.5MM in annual incentives, says Pelissero (via Twitter). Jason Fitzgerald of OverTheCap.com breaks it down in chart form.
  • Kellen Clemens‘ two-year, $3MM pact with the Chargers includes a $645K signing bonus and a $250K roster bonus due on the third day of the 2015 league year, tweets Pelissero.
  • The Redskins‘ one-year, $2MM deal with Darryl Sharpton can be worth up to $2MM. It’s made up of an $820K signing bonus, a $730K non-guaranteed base salary, $200K in per-game roster bonuses, and $250K in playing-time incentives, according to Pelissero (via Twitter).
