Falcons Release Laquon Treadwell, Slash Roster To 53

Here are the players the Falcons cut to trim their roster to the 53-man regular-season limit:

Waived:

Released:

Atlanta added Treadwell last year but did not see a considerable impact from the former first-round pick. The Vikings cut Treadwell ahead of the 2019 regular season, following the formerly coveted prospects struggles to claim a consistent role in Minnesota.

Wilcox re-signed with the Falcons a month ago. He has played for five teams but has not seen regular-season action since the 2018 season. The former Cowboys started suffered a season-ending injury last summer.

The cuts of Benkert and Lauletta leave two quarterbacks — Matt Ryan and Matt Schaub — on Atlanta’s roster. With Ryan being one of the most durable passers in the NFL, the Falcons can take advantage of an extra roster spot by keeping just two QBs.

Derrius Guice Set To Return After Redskins’ Bye

It appears everything has gone smoothly in Redskins running back Derrius Guice‘s recovery. Washington has cut running back Craig Reynolds in order to clear the way for Guice’s return, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network tweets.

Guice missed his entire rookie season after tearing his ACL during the preseason, and complications from surgery prolonged his initial recovery. Everyone was excited to see what he would look like in 2019, but after carrying the ball ten times for 18 yards in Week 1, he was placed on injured reserve again with a knee issue. After missing the requisite eight games, it looks like he’s going to be ready to roll in Week 11 following Washington’s bye. He returned to practice recently.

Guice has had a lot of tough luck during his short time in the pros, and hopefully he’s able to stay healthy this time around. Guice was viewed by many as the second-best running back in the 2018 draft class behind Saquon Barkley, but he fell to the Redskins with the 59th pick amid rumors of off-field issues. It’ll be very interesting to see how interim Redskins coach Bill Callahan divides the playing time in his backfield moving forward.

Callahan has committed the team to running the ball a lot more, and has been pounding the rock with Adrian Peterson since he took over for Jay Gruden. Washington isn’t going anywhere this season, so they’ll likely be cautious with Guice at first. At the same time, they obviously want to see what they have in a young guy who has barely played in his first two seasons. Reynolds is an undrafted rookie from D-II school Kutztown, who was promoted from the practice squad a few weeks back.

Sunday NFL Transactions: NFC East

Listed below are the Sunday roster moves for the four NFC East teams. Following the 53-man roster cutdown deadline yesterday, many teams will make slight tweaks to their rosters, claiming players off waivers or signing guys who clear waivers. Those transactions for the Cowboys, EaglesGiants, and Redskins are noted below.

Additionally, teams can begin constructing their 10-man practice squads today. You can check out our glossary entry on practice squads to brush up on those changes, as well as all the other guidelines that govern the 10-man units, whose players practice with the team but aren’t eligible to suit up on Sundays.

Here are Sunday’s NFC East transactions, which will continue to be updated throughout the day.

Redskins Get Down To 53

And here it is, the 32nd and final team’s roster cuts. Their most notable release was the previously announced cutting of former first-round pick Josh Doctson. Of the stuff that’s new, not much is shocking. A couple of years ago, 2017 fourth-round running back Samaje Perine was hyped up as a potential future starter. The Oklahoma product, who had 603 rushing yards as a rookie, was cut today.

Veteran receiver Brian Quick, who had 564 yards with the Rams in 2016, was let go as well. Washington also parted ways with cornerback Adonis Alexander, a Virginia Tech product who they drafted in the sixth round of the 2018 Supplemental Draft.
