Craig Reynolds

Lions Promote Craig Reynolds

The Lions have officially signed Craig Reynolds to the 53-man roster, per a club announcement. This comes one day after Reynolds amassed 112 yards off of 26 carries in an upset win over the Cardinals.

Reynolds was elevated to fill in for D’Andre Swift and Jamaal Williams. On Sunday, he made the most of his opportunity. Per league rules, stashing Reynolds on the practice squad again would have required the Lions to expose him to waivers. After his showing against the Cardinals, it’s likely that another team would have snatched him up.

The Lions aren’t playing for much over these final three games, but Reynolds has tons to gain. The Kutztown product was previously earning just $165K in base salary while on the taxi squad. Now, he can solidify his place on the 2022 roster as the Lions continue their rebuilding process.

Reynolds figures to see plenty of carries next week when the Lions face the Falcons in Atlanta. Whether Lions fans want it or not, they’ll be gunning for their first winning streak of the season on Sunday.

Lions Down To 53

The Lions have their 53-man roster in place. On Tuesday, the Lions officially cut:

Waived

Placed on Reserve/Suspended

The Lions will carry three quarterbacks for now in Jard Goff, Tim Boyle, and David Blough. Boyle is currently dealing with an injured thumb, which will keep him sidelined for two months. But, in order to hang on to him and dress him ASAP, they’ll have to carry him on their initial 53-man roster. Fortunately, Goff has proven largely durable during his five-year career. He did not miss a start due to injury until late last season, when a thumb surgery sidelined him.

Lions Cut Quinton Dunbar

The Lions have released cornerback Quinton Dunbar, per a club announcement. In a related move, they’ve added running back Craig Reynolds to the 90-man roster.

Dunbar joined the Lions in April on a one-year contract. However, it was a veteran salary benefit deal with a modest signing bonus of just $137.5K, so the Lions won’t be on the hook for much.

Dunbar — once entangled in a bizarre legal situation with friend Deandre Baker — was traded from Washington to Seattle last year. Injuries cut his season short, but the Seahawks and Cardinals still showed interest in him as a free agent. The young corner was set to join forces with Jeff Okudah, helping to replace Desmond Trufant and Justin Coleman. Now, Dunbar could now wind up on his fourth team in three years.

Dunbar broke through in 2019, rating as one of Pro Football Focus’ top corners and nabbing four interceptions. He held opposing quarterbacks to a 61.2 passer rating that year, but saw just six games in 2020 thanks to knee surgery.

To date, the ex-UF Gator has 31 starts to his credit across six seasons.
