Corey Peters

NFC South Notes: Orakpo, Falcons, Peters

Here’s a quick look at the NFC South..

  • Washington would like to hang on to Brian Orakpo, but they’ll have competition. There are at least four teams interested in the pass rusher, according to a source who spoke with Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, and the Falcons are one of them. At present, Washington and the Falcons are regarded as the front runners.
  • It is unclear exactly where the Falcons and defensive lineman Corey Peters stand at this point, but there have been ongoing discussions between both parties, according to Vaughn McClure of ESPN.com. McClure expects agent Greg Linton to argue that Peters was more valuable than Tyson Jackson, who was brought in at $5MM per year to stuff the run but fell far below expectations. The Falcons, meanwhile, would probably want Peters at half the price.
  • Mike Triplett of ESPN.com looked at Saints restricted free agent offensive tackle Bryce Harris. The 26-year-old didn’t excel at the left tackle position, but he has played well in the past as a backup right tackle and an extra blocker in jumbo run packages. That role probably wouldn’t be worth the $1.5MM RFA tender, so they’ll probably seek to bring him back on a cheaper deal if they want to retain him.

AFC Notes: Fins, Broncos, FA Targets, Ravens

Always among the biggest players in free agency, the Dolphins will look to fill several holes when the new league year begins next week. Corner, defensive tackle, and linebacker are among the positions that could use upgrades in South Beach, and Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald offers several names that could be of interest to the Fins. Per Jackson, the Dolphins have internally discussed both Kareem Jackson and Brandon Flowers at corner, and the club also wants to re-sign Jimmy Wilson.

Along the defensive line, Miami is interested in Tom Johnson, Corey Peters, and Terrance Knighton, the latter of whom, as Jackson adds, will be the most expensive. Kenrick Ellis is viewed as a “backup option,” while Haloti Ngata will be on the Dolphins’ radar if he’s released by the Ravens. At linebacker, Jackson has previously reported that Miami is intrigued by David Harris, Mason Foster, and Dan Skuta.

Here’s more from the AFC:

  • Like the Dolphins, the Broncos are expected to be heavily involved in free agency, as they have been for the duration of GM John Elway’s reign. According to Mike Klis of the Denver Post, the Broncos will target a variety of positions next week, with offensive line, safety, tight end, and defensive end among them. Center Rodney Hudson, edge defender Pernell McPhee, and and tight end Charles Clay all figure to spark Denver’s interest, per Klis, who adds that center is the one position where the Broncos will surely add a high-profile free agent.
  • Ravens cornerback Victor Hampton was arrested for DWI last night, tweets Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun. Hampton was signed to a futures deal in January, and given Baltimore’s low-tolerance for off-the-field incidents at the moment, Aaron Wilson of the Sun (via Twitter) doesn’t see Hampton ever setting foot on a field for the Ravens.
  • The Raiders haven’t officially released safety Tyvon Branch, leading Jason Fitzgerald of Over The Cap to believe (Twitter link) that Branch will be designated a post-June 1 cut. Such releases can’t be formalized until the new league year begins next week.
  • In a full-length piece, Fitzgerald takes a look at the Colts’ cap situation as they head into free agency. Check out PFR’s Connor Byrne’s Indianapolis outlook here.

Falcons Re-Sign Corey Peters

WEDNESDAY, 11:14am: Peters’ one-year contract for 2014 has a base salary of $1MM, plus $500K in per-game roster bonuses, reports Tom Pelissero of USA Today (via Twitter).

TUESDAY, 1:23pm: The Falcons have re-signed free agent defensive tackle Corey Peters, the team announced today (Twitter link). The financial details of the contract aren’t yet known, but it’ll be a one-year deal, according to the club.

Peters, who is coming off his four-year rookie contract in Atlanta, started 15 games for the team last season, recording 46 tackles and five sacks. According to Pro Football Focus, Peters ranked as the 30th defensive tackle of 69 qualified players, performing better against the run than the pass. The 25-year-old suffered a torn Achilles late in the season, and is still recovering from that injury, but expects to be ready for training camp.

With the Falcons expected to retool a defensive line that struggled to pressure the quarterback in 2013, Peters may see his role altered slightly for 2014, but the former third-round pick should still be a valuable part of the club’s run defense, assuming he’s back to full health.

South Rumors: Pollard, Texans, Buccaneers

The Titans re-signed Bernard Pollard this afternoon and a couple interesting notes have trickled out since. According to Terry McCormick of TitanInsider.com (via Twitter), Pollard did not use his agent and worked out the new deal himself. General manager Ruston Webster told Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean (via Twitter) that “getting this deal done today helps our overall plan for this offseason…. We still have work ahead of us trying to retain some of our other players, but we are glad to be able to get this one done.” Among the team’s other free agents are cornerback Alterraun Verner and receiver Kenny Britt.
