Patriots Reach 53-Man Max

The Patriots made a massive amount of cuts on Saturday to reach the 53-man limit. Most of the cuts were expected, but there were a few surprises in the bunch.

Karras was widely projected to be the team’s top backup on the interior line, so his release comes as a surprise. The 24-year-old was drafted by the Pats in the sixth round of the 2016 draft and played in all 16 regular season games last year. He also appeared in all three playoff games as a reserve.

O’Shaughnessy, acquired via trade in April, was competing for the third tight end spot. The 6-foot-4, 245-pounder has played in 23 NFL games with six starts.

Draft Pick Signings: Jets, Patriots

Along with the Dolphins, a couple of other AFC East clubs made draft signings Friday. Here they are:

  • The Jets inked two sixth-round picks, Louisiana-Lafayette running back Elijah McGuire and Mississippi cornerback Derrick Jones, to their rookie deals, tweets Brian Costello of the New York Post. McGuire (No. 188) and Jones (No. 204) are the first members of Gang Green’s nine-player class to sign.
  • Patriots sixth-round offensive tackle Conor McDermott has put pen to paper, per ESPN’s Field Yates (on Twitter). At No. 211, the ex-UCLA Bruin was the final selection last weekend for New England, which only had four picks. The other three haven’t signed yet.

Cowboys Trade No. 211 To Patriots

The Cowboys and Patriots agreed on a sixth-round deal, one that will send Dallas’ No. 211 pick to New England, Charean Williams of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram tweets.

UCLA offensive tackle Conor McDermott will join the Patriots as a result of the exchange, per Doug Kyed of NESN.com (on Twitter). McDermott is the second tackle the defending Super Bowl champions have taken this weekend, with the UCLA talent being set to accompany Troy tackle/guard Antonio Garcia to Massachusetts. All four of the Pats’ picks have been linemen thus far.

The Cowboys collected Nos. 216 and 239 from the Patriots.
