Washington Promoting DB Cole Luke, Signing Him To Two-Year Deal

The Washington Football Team is making a (relatively) significant commitment to one of their practice squad players. NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reports (via Twitter) that Washington will promote defensive back Cole Luke from their practice squad and sign him to a two-year deal.

It’s not every day see a team sign one of their practice squad players to a multi-year deal…especially a player who has seen only 14 NFL snaps in four professional seasons. Of course, the organization has presumably seen plenty of progression from Luke behind the scenes, and as Sam Fortier of the Washington Post points out, head coach Ron Rivera previously coached the defensive back when the two were in Carolina.

Luke, a 2017 undrafted free agent out of Notre Dame, spent most of the first three seasons of his career on the Panthers practice squad. He finally made his NFL debut in 2019, collecting three tackles in eight games. He joined Washington’s practice squad back in September.

As Fortier observes, Luke could end up seeing time at one of two positions. The coaching staff still hasn’t found a solution at safety, while Jimmy Moreland has occasionally struggled at nickle corner. The 25-year-old Luke has the versatility to fill in at either of those spots.

Minor NFL Transactions: 8/28/20

We’ll keep track of today’s minor moves in this post. In addition to the transactions listed below, note that Broncos DT Joel Heath and Giants CB Shakial Taylor, who had previously been listed as cut, actually opted out of the 2020 season. As Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network tweets, both players were reinstated to their teams’ rosters and placed on the Reserve/Opt-Out List. The full (and final) opt-out tracker can be found here:

Panthers Re-Sign DB Cole Luke

The Panthers have re-signed exclusive rights free agent CB Cole Luke to a one-year deal, the team announced. Luke finally got his first taste of regular season action last year, appearing in eight games for Carolina.

Luke, a Notre Dame product, hooked on with the Panthers as a UDFA in 2017. He spent most of his rookie season on IR with an ankle injury, and he was on he club’s practice squad for the entire 2018 campaign.

He got bumped up from the taxi squad halfway through the 2019 season, though most of his work came on special teams. He played just 15 defensive snaps against 117 special teams snaps, and he recorded two total tackles.

Still, the Panthers are in something of a transition period, and corners James Bradberry, Ross Cockrell, and Javien Elliott are all eligible for unrestricted free agency. While Carolina will almost certainly bring back Bradberry, there could be an opportunity for Luke to climb the depth chart in 2020.

Sunday NFL Transactions: NFC South

Listed below are the Sunday roster moves for the four NFC South teams. Following the 53-man roster cutdown deadline yesterday, many teams will make slight tweaks to their rosters, claiming players off waivers or signing guys who clear waivers. Those transactions for the Buccaneers, FalconsPanthers and Saints are noted below.

Additionally, teams can begin constructing their 10-man practice squads today. You can check out our glossary entry on practice squads to brush up on those changes, as well as all the other guidelines that govern the 10-man units, whose players practice with the team but aren’t eligible to suit up on Sundays.

Here are Sunday’s NFC South transactions, which will continue to be updated throughout the day.

Panthers Set 53-Man Roster

The Panthers have officially set their 53-man roster, and there are few major surprises on the list. One of the most notable names is running back Cameron Artis-Payne, who spent the past four years in Carolina. The team also moved on from fellow offensive veteran Aldrick Robinson, who finished last season with five touchdown receptions for the Vikings.

Otherwise, the other notable names include recent draft picks, like 2018 seventh-round wideout Terry Godwin and 2017 fifth-round cornerback Corn Elder.
