AFC North Rumors: McClain, Ravens, Browns

Terrence Cody spoke highly of Ravens teammate Rolando McClain, tweets Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun. “He’s humbled himself a lot,” Cody said of McClain, who was reinstated off of the reserve list yesterday. “I’m real excited to have back an old teammate I went to war with. It’s awesome.” Here’s more out of the AFC North..

Oregon cornerback Terrance Mitchell, who boasts a 4.43 second 40-yard-dash, is quickly gaining buzz, tweets Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. The Ravens have interest in Mitchell, who has already worked out for the Colts and Raiders. Mitchell didn’t allow any touchdowns in 2013 for the Ducks.
The Ravens‘ interest in Indiana wide receiver Cody Latimer is growing, tweets Wilson. Ravens wide receivers coach Bobby Engram will attend Latimer’s private workout next Friday in Bloomington (link). The Chargers auditioned the rising prospect earlier this week and the Rams are said to have interest.
Utah State cornerback Nevin Lawson will visit the Browns next Wednesday and Thursday, a league source tells Wilson. Lawson, a physical corner who runs a 4.48 40-yard-dash with a 33-inch vertical leap, previously visited the Falcons.

AFC Notes: Pats, Browns, Sam, Chargers

Let’s round up a few Wednesday updates from across the AFC….

Within his latest piece at Bleacher Report, Mike Freeman writes that the Patriots are considering adding a receiver earlier in the draft and that the Browns “really love” Derek Carr, who is a strong candidate for the club’s second first-round pick.
The Browns aren’t set on Carr yet though — Adam Schefter of ESPN.com reports (via Twitter) that the club is privately working out Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron today, and Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer adds (via Twitter) that McCarron will also have a formal visit with the Browns next week.
Five of the six teams that have expressed the most interest in Missouri’s Michael Sam are AFC clubs, according to Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun, who identifies the Ravens, Patriots, Colts, Browns, Jets, and Falcons as suitors for the edge defender.
Meanwhile, in a piece for the National Football Post, Wilson reports that Illinois State defensive end Colton Underwood has visited the Chargers and Chiefs, and also worked out for the Patriots.
After having visited the Cowboys yesterday, Oregon State defensive end Scott Crichton is visiting the Broncos today and the Chargers tomorrow, tweets Ian Rapoport of NFL.com.
The Chargers are hosting Indiana wideout Cody Latimer and Montana linebacker Brock Coyle today, according to Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune (Twitter links). Coyle will visit the Seahawks next, Gehlken notes.

Rams Eyeing Watkins, Robinson, Clowney?

The Rams are hosting Clemson wideout Sammy Watkins for a pre-draft visit today, and will privately work out Watkins on Friday of this week, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (via Twitter). St. Louis, with the second and 13th overall picks in this year’s draft, has taken a look at several of the year’s top prospects, but Rapoport thinks the team’s pick at No. 2 could come down to Watkins, offensive tackle Greg Robinson, and defensive end Jadeveon Clowney. Both Robinson and Clowney have already visited St. Louis.

Of the teams with top-five picks, the Rams appear to be the only one without any real interest in the top tier of quarterbacks in this year’s draft class. As such, the club can focus on the best players available at other positions, which includes guys like Watkins, Robinson, and Clowney. While Clowney ranks as perhaps the best overall prospect in the draft, defensive end also isn’t a real position of need for the Rams at the moment, whereas wide receiver is a spot where the team could use an upgrade. It’s also possible Clowney won’t be on the board when the Rams pick at No. 2, but it’d be a real surprise if Watkins or Robinson was unavailable.

If the Rams pass on Watkins, they’ll likely draft a receiver later on, and one candidate could be Indiana’s Cody Latimer. According to Tony Pauline of DraftInsider.net (via Twitter), Latimer is visiting the Rams.

Extra Points: Wilkerson, Jaguars, Mosley

First-round picks from the 2011 draft class became eligible for contract extensions this offseason, and the Jets and Muhammad Wilkerson seemed very intent on getting one signed. So far, there hasn’t been any indication of a deal on the horizon, but the defensive tackle still says he has no intention of holding out if he doesn’t get a long-term deal, tweets Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post. Wilkerson went on to call GM John Idzik “a great GM and a man with a plan,” (link). More from around the NFL..

Indiana wide receiver Cody Latimer has a pre-draft visit with the Jaguars, a league source tells Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post (on Twitter).
Former Alabama linebacker C.J. Mosley will visit the Titans early next week, according to Audra Martin of WKRN (Twitter link).
The Falcons worked out Murray State wide receiver Walter Powell today, a league source tells Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post (on Twitter). Meanwhile, Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch (on Twitter) adds that Powell has a private workout scheduled with the Jets later this month. So far, there’s nothing brewing between Powell and the Rams, Thomas says.
Nate Ulrich of the Akron-Beacon Journal weighs the pros and cons of the Browns matching the Jaguars’ offer to center Alex Mack. Ultimately, he concludes that the good would outweigh the bad for Cleveland.
As exciting as Johnny Manziel is, Vic Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle is pretty confident that the Raiders will pass on him at No. 5. General Manager Reggie McKenzie has said that he strictly goes for the best talent available and none of the signal callers are top ten talents, in Tafur’s view. He opines that there are five players available that can make an impact right away – Jadeveon Clowney, Sammy Watkins, Khalil Mack, Greg Robinson and Jake Matthews – and Oakland can get one of them if they don’t trade down.
Oklahoma cornerback Aaron Colvin told SiriusXM NFL Radio (on Twitter) that in addition to his visit with the Eagles, he has two more coming up with the Saints and 49ers.

NFC Visits: Rams, Coleman, Latimer

The Rams are piling up their pre-draft activity, as the team brought in Pittsburgh quarterback Tom Savage today, reports Adam Caplan of ESPN (via Twitter). Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the team has also shown interest in South Carolina’s Connor Shaw and SMU’s Garrett Gilbert (via Twitter).

Thomas also noted that offensive lineman Zack Martin of Notre Dame was also scheduled to visit, but that meeting was cancelled (via Twitter). Thomas did not give a reason for the cancellation.

Kurt Coleman is visiting with the Vikings today, and will spend the night and continue to meet with the team tomorrow, reports Ben Goessling of ESPN.com (via Twitter).
Indiana wide receiver Cody Latimer had a meeting tonight with the Panthers, reports Alex Marvez of Fox Sports 1 (via Twitter). Latimer will have his pro day on April 25.
Iowa tight end C.J. Fiedorowicz is visiting the Buccaneers today, reports Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun. The 6’5″ tight end has worked out privately for the Buccaneers previously. He’s will visit the Jets next.

Redskins Notes: Mesko, Jackson, Latimer

The Redskins signed Blake Clingan to a contract earlier today, giving the team a pair of punters on the roster — Clingan joins Robert Malone, who was signed following the end of the regular season. According to Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com (via Twitter), former Patriots punter Zoltan Mesko auditioned for Washington as well, but unless the club plans on a three-way competition in camp, it looks like Mesko’s workout with the Redskins won’t result in a contract.

Let’s round up a few more items out of Washington….

Appearing on SiriusXM NFL Radio yesterday, Redskins head coach Jay Gruden suggested that when someone like DeSean Jackson becomes available, the team wants to do “whatever it takes” to land that player.
Asked in the same interview whether the club is done signing free agents, Gruden indicated the Redskins are focused primarily on the draft unless someone else piques their interest in free agency.
The Redskins are scheduling a pre-draft visit with Indiana wide receiver Cody Latimer, says Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun (via Twitter). According to Wilson (via Twitter), Latimer will hold a private workout day later this month, and at least 17 NFL teams have expressed interest in attending.
Wilson also reports (via Twitter) that Rob Jackson‘s new one-year contract with Washington is a minimum salary benefit deal that includes a $65K signing bonus.

Pauline’s Draft Notes: Latimer, Johnson, West

In this nugget-filled piece on draftinsider.net, NFL draft analyst Tony Pauline drops some knowledge on the latest workouts and visits from eligible prospects around the league. Here are a few of the notes PFR has yet to touch on:

The Eagles hosted Indiana receiver Cody Latimer for an official visit today in addition to Brandon Coleman, Quron Pratt and Kelvin Benjamin.
The Chargers and Saints will host New Mexico offensive lineman Darryl Johnson, whom Pauline describes as a practice squad developmental prospect who projects to guard in the NFL.
Terrance West has already worked out for the Falcons and has made an official visit to see the Titans. At least 22 teams were represented at the Towson running back’s pro-day today.
Georgia State offensive tackle John Ulrich has trips scheduled to visit the Falcons and Seahawks.
Sources tell Pauline to expect the Seahawks to target offensive tackles in the upcoming draft.
Pauline hears that the Buccaneers hope to draft at least one tackle and/or guard with starting potential.
South Carolina edge rusher Chaz Sutton recently met with the Texans and Raiders.

Draft Visits: Latimer, Tripp, Croyle, Gilbert

Indiana receiver Cody Latimer will visit seven teams over the next three weeks: the Bills, Eagles, Lions, Raiders, Seahawks, Chargers, and Panthers.
Additionally, Lattimer will have a private dinner with Panthers receivers coach Ricky Proehl and director of college scouting Don Gregory on April 8, and undergo a class-room exercise on April 9.
Two Montana linebackers have scheduled visits — Jordan Tripp will meet with the Eagles on Monday and the Falcons later in the week, and Brock Croyle will visit with the Chargers and the Seahawks.
Southern Methodist University quarterback Garrett Gilbert will work out for the Buccaneers, Falcons, and Panthers.

AFC Draft Notes: Jets, Texans, Ravens

April is typically draft month for the NFL, but that’s not the case in 2014 — we’ve still got another five-plus weeks until this year’s three-day event gets underway on May 8. Still, that doesn’t mean there aren’t several rumors and reports floating around about teams’ potential draft plans. Here are a few of the latest items on AFC clubs:

The Jets are intrigued by Texas Tech tight end Jace Amaro, a team source tells Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News. Amaro is scheduled to visit the Jets in the coming weeks, and Mehta suggests the tight end could be on the board when the club picks in the second round.
It’s no surprise that the Texans‘ signing of Ryan Fitzpatrick wouldn’t affect the possibility of the team drafting a quarterback next month. However, it’s a little surprising that, even with Fitzpatrick, Case Keenum, and T.J. Yates on board, head coach Bill O’Brien suggested the Texans could add multiple QBs in the draft (Twitter link via official Texans account).
Eastern Illinois quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, Florida State wideout Kelvin Benjamin, Utah cornerback Keith McGill, and Cal linebacker Khairi Fortt are making official pre-draft visits with the Ravens today, league sources tells Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun.
Despite the fact that the Dolphins signed Knowshon Moreno and like Lamar Miller, the club has interest in adding another running back in the draft, according to Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald, who says it could happen in the fourth or fifth round.
A pair of teams announced pre-draft visits, as the Bills host Indiana wide receiver Cody Latimer and Notre Dame tight end Troy Niklas, while Ole Miss receiver Donte Moncrief and Baylor running back Lache Seastrunk visit the Steelers (Twitter link).

Extra Points: Browns, Latimer, Dolphins

It is typically true that a poor showing during an NFL prospect’s pro day is a great deal more noteworthy than a strong one. After all, pro days are arranged to optimize performance, with familiar conditions, familiar targets, etc. So when Louisville QB Teddy Bridgewater delivered an underwhelming audition at his pro day, it created a bit of a stir among national writers who were suddenly more quick to point out his faults than his strengths.

In a recent mailbag, Tony Grossi of ESPN.com expressed his belief that the Browns will not only pass on Bridgewater with their No. 4 overall pick, but with their No. 26 overall pick as well. Instead, Grossi projects the Browns to take Clemson WR Sammy Watkins with the fourth pick in the draft (although he does tweet that the Browns have to consider a QB in the first three rounds). Now for some more notes around the league:

Despite using the transition tag, rather than the franchise tag, on free agent center Alex Mack, the Browns seem to have kept him off the market just the same. Grossi tweets that Mack has not received offers from any other club.
Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer looks at five positions the Panthers need to address in the rest of the offseason, beginning with a No. 1 wideout.
Indiana WR Cody Latimer has a private visit scheduled with the Ravens and Seahawks, according to Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun. Latimer is considered a rising prospect and caught 72 passes for 1,096 yards and nine touchdowns last season. As we saw in a piece that our Luke Adams wrote on Thursday, Latimer will be a very busy young man, with at least seven teams having scheduled a visit with him.
Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sun Sentinel put together a very detailed mailbag post, beginning with an examination of what the Dolphins might do if one of the top QB prospects falls to them with the No. 19 overall pick in the draft.
