Minor NFL Transactions: 3/25/16

Here are Friday’s minor signings, cuts, and other transactions from around the NFL, with any new moves added to the top of the list throughout the day:

  • The Bears have re-signed safety and special-teamer Chris Prosinski to a one-year contract, the team announced today (via Twitter). Although Prosinski, who turns 29 next month, did make five starts for the Bears last season, he has primarily been a reserve since entering the league in 2011, and figures to return to that role in 2016 if Antrel Rolle and Adrian Amos are healthy.
  • Linebacker Steven Johnson has agreed to a one-year contract with the Steelers, the team announced today (Twitter link via Burt Lauten). Johnson, 28 next Monday, spent his first three NFL seasons in Denver before playing in Tennessee in 2015. He projects as a depth piece and a special-teamer in Pittsburgh.

Bears Waive Brock Vereen

The Bears announced that they have waived 2014 fourth-round pick Brock Vereen, as Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune tweets. In related moves, the team has also inked safety Chris Prosinski and linebacker LaRoy Reynolds. The moves leave the Bears with one open roster spot, which may be used for the returning Jeremiah Ratliff.

Vereen was one of the players who failed to make a tackle on the kickoff return for a touchdown at Seattle this Sunday. He was also on coverage for Jimmy Graham‘s 30-yard touchdown reception. While Vereen was not solely responsible for either score, those plays didn’t help his case in Chicago.

The Jaguars made Reynolds a free agent recently when they waived him to make room for wide receiver Tony Washington on the 53-man roster. Prosinski, a former Eagles safety, auditioned for Miami earlier this month but that did not result in a deal.

Workout Notes: Bills, Dolphins, Raiders, Bucs

With 53-man rosters set, teams around the NFL will start to frequently bring in players for workouts and auditions, keeping up-to-date on which free agents are out there, in case injury replacements or practice squad fill-ins are required.

Here are a few of the latest updates on teams working out players, or bringing them in for visits:

  • The Bills, who are exploring other possible options at kicker after an underwhelming preseason from Dan Carpenter, worked out Alex Henery, according to Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post (via Twitter). Henery’s last game in the NFL, the one that cost him his job, came last October, when he missed three field goals for the Lions against Buffalo.
  • Before they signed linebacker Adrian Hubbard, the Dolphins worked out Hubbard and several other players, according to Wilson (Twitter link). The players who earned an audition with Miami included former Raiders safety Jonathan Dowling, ex-Cardinals linebacker Glenn Carson, former Bengals linebacker Nico Johnson, ex-Cowboys cornerback Robert Steeples, and former Eagles safety Chris Prosinski.
  • The Raiders brought in a number of players for workouts, with a focus on wide receivers, quarterbacks, and defensive backs. According to Wilson (Twitter links), wideouts Phil Bates, John Harris, DeAndre Carter, and T.J. Graham, quarterbacks Jeff Tuel and Phillip Sims, and defensive backs Tommie Campbell, Phillip Thomas, B.W. Webb, and Ty Zimmerman auditioned for the club. Offensive lineman Dillon Farrell also had a tryout with Oakland.
  • Offensive lineman Austin Reiter, a 2015 seventh-rounder waived by Washington over the weekend, is working out for the Buccaneers this morning, tweets Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times.
  • After being waived by the Chargers last week, wide receiver Titus Davis paid a visit to the Lions, tweets Wilson.

Eagles Reduce Roster To 52 Players

Their decision to cut Tim Tebow will make the biggest headlines today, but the Eagles have made many more roster moves, and have not only reduced their roster to the maximum 53 — they’ve gone one further, getting down to 52 players.

As Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Inquirer tweets, there’s a good chance that 53rd spot will be filled in the coming days with a quarterback. After having cut Tebow and traded Matt Barkley, the club is carrying just two signal-callers, and wouldn’t mind adding some insurance for the oft-injured Sam Bradford.

East Notes: Romo, Washington, Prosinski

While Tony Romo has been plagued by back injuries within the last year, recently being forced to the bench with two small fractures in his back, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones doesn’t expect the quarterback to retire anytime soon, writes Jean-Jacques Taylor of ESPNDallas.com.

“I think it’s realistic for him to play five more years,” Jones said of Romo. “I’m aware of his back. Only God knows what is in store for his back. I’ve seen backs out there that you wouldn’t believe how they look on the MRIs and how they look on X-rays. If you’re concerned about his future, then look at his age, and you might say, boy, you need to be thinking about a time when he doesn’t play. I don’t look at it much differently than that with his back, because there have been three very different types of injuries that have caused him to miss games with his back.”

While we wait to see if Romo returns to the field in London this weekend against the Jaguars, as is expected, let’s check in on a few items from out of the NFL’s two East divisions….

  • Rich Tandler of CSNWashington.com takes an early look at Washington‘s salary cap situation for 2015, including identifying a handful of players who could be cut before next season. While there’s been no indication from the team that those players are in danger of being released, defensive end Stephen Bowen, nose tackle Barry Cofield, and guard Chris Chester are among the players who potentially fit the bill due to a combination of age and cap numbers, says Tandler.
  • Safety Chris Prosinski‘s new deal with the Eagles is for two years, according to Adam Caplan of ESPN.com (via Twitter). That doesn’t necessarily mean the former Jaguar will stick in Philadelphia for the 2015 season, but if things goes well this year, he’ll be an inexpensive option in the secondary for next year.
  • Jets GM John Idzik was “clearly miffed” by a prank that involved a plane flying over Wednesday’s practice with a banner that read “Fire John Idzik,” according to George Willis of the New York Post, who adds that Idzik vowed the Jets will get things straightened out.
  • Earlier today, Eagles head coach Chip Kelly addressed rumors that his team had “soured” on quarterback Nick Foles.

Eagles Sign Prosinski, Put Ryans On IR

4:40pm: The Eagles have officially announced the pair of roster moves.

4:19pm: The Eagles will officially place linebacker DeMeco Ryans on season-ending injured reserve after the team’s defensive leader tore his Achilles tendon during Sunday’s game against the Texans, GM Howie Roseman confirmed today. With the empty spot on the active roster vacated by Ryans, the team will sign former Jaguars safety Chris Prosinski, according to Roseman (Twitter links).

Prosinski, 27, spent the first three seasons of his NFL career with the Jaguars, starting nine of the 45 contests he played for the team between 2011 and 2013. He saw his role reduced this season, however, and has been shuffled on and off the roster during the season’s first two months. The former fourth-round pick worked out for the Eagles last week, and the team apparently liked what it saw during that audition.

While Ryans will land on injured reserve, an MRI on the Eagles’ other notable injured player from this weekend, Nick Foles, revealed that the quarterback won’t require surgery — he’ll remain on the active roster and is expected to be sidelined for six to eight weeks.

The Cowboys scheduled a visit for linebacker Will Smith, a source tells Charean Williams of the Star-Telegram. However, there might not be a spot for Smith after Tim Dobbins was picked up earlier today. The Cowboys have needs at offensive guard and at linebacker with injuries to starting left guard Ron Leary and starting weakside linebacker Justin Durant. AFC East Notes: Jets, Bills, Dolphins

Through seven weeks, the Patriots have assumed their usual spot at the top of the AFC East standings, but the Bills and Dolphins remain within striking distance of Bill Belichick, Tom Brady, and company. This weekend, both East runners-up will visit 1-6 teams, with the Bills facing the Jets and the Dolphins traveling to Jacksonville. As we look forward to seeing if they can keep pace with the Pats, let’s check in on a few Tuesday notes from around the division….

  • While the financial burden the Jets are assuming by acquiring Percy Harvin may not be exorbitant, the team is risking stunting Geno Smith‘s development, writes Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News. If Harvin’s transition is smooth, he’ll act as another playmaker for Smith to utilize, but Mehta hears from multiple sources that Harvin resented Russell Wilson for “myriad reasons” in Seattle, and believes that the wideout could do more harm than good for Smith.
  • Ian Connor of ESPNNewYork.com takes Jets general manager John Idzik to task for his roster decisions over the last couple years, arguing that the GM is in over his head and overmatched in his current role.
  • According to reports from Adam Caplan of ESPN.com and Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun (Twitter links), the Jets recently worked out fullback Tony Fiammetta, safety Chris Prosinski, and cornerbacks Johnny Adams and Marcus Cromartie.
  • In addition to the auditions reported yesterday, the Dolphins also tried out defensive backs Tommie Campbell and T.J. Heath, as well as wide receiver Derek Moye, tweets Wilson.
  • Former Troy wide receiver Eric Thomas is working out for the Bills today, according to Wilson, who adds (via Twitter) that the team also recently tried out punter Michael Palardy.

  • The Patriots have replaced offensive lineman Chris Martin on their practice squad, re-adding defensive tackle Ben Bass to take his place, as Phil Perry of CSNNE.com writes.
  • Giants cornerback Jayron Hosley has been reinstated from suspension following the Giants’ fourth game of the season last night, tweets Howard Balzer of The SportsXchange. The team will receive a roster exemption for Hosley, meaning New York will have until Monday to decide whether to cut the cornerback or someone else in order to get down to 53 players.

  • According to Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun (via Twitter), the Ravens have cut defensive tackle A.J. Pataiali’i from their practice squad. With Fitzgerald Toussaint and Deonte Thompson returning to the squad after being waived from the active roster, the team is now carrying the maximum 10 players.
  • Safety Chris Prosinski, who was recently placed on injured reserve by the Jaguars, has been removed from the team’s IR list with an injury settlement, tweets John Oesher of Jaguars.com. Teams around the NFL are shuffling players on and off their 53-man rosters today, and we’ll track all those minor, back-of-the-roster transactions right here, with the latest moves added to the top of the page throughout the day:

  • The Chargers waived/injured cornerback Marcus Cromartie, according to Eric Williams of ESPN.com (on Twitter).
  • The Titans have agreed to terms on a contract with tight end Chase Coffman, waiving wideout T.J. Graham to create space on the roster, tweets Paul Kuharsky of ESPN.com (via Twitter).
  • With Dennis Pitta out for the year and heading to injured reserve, the Ravens have promoted tight end Phillip Supernaw from the practice squad to their active roster, reports Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun (via Twitter).

Earlier updates:

  • Ryan O’Halloran of the Florida Times-Union has the full details on the Jaguars‘ transactions (via Twitter). In addition to the two previously-reported signings – noted below – the team also added tight end Nic Jacobs, who had been on the Saints’ practice squad. To make room for the three incoming players, the club cut tight end Marcel Jensen and wideout Kerry Taylor, and waived-injured safety Chris Prosinski.
  • Having cut linebacker Keith Smith from their 53-man roster yesterday, the Cowboys have an open spot, and will use it to bring back defensive end Lavar Edwards, writes Todd Archer of ESPNDallas.com. Smith had been added to the roster in Edwards’ place for this past Sunday’s game due to the absence of injured linebacker Justin Durant.
  • Defensive tackle Deandre Coleman has been signed off the Jaguars‘ practice squad by the Dolphins, according to a tweet from Miami’s official account. The Dolphins cut safety Brandian Ross in a corresponding move.
  • Linebacker Jeremiah George, who had been on the Jets‘ practice squad, tweeted today that he’s now a Jaguar. The move has yet to be announced by the club, but it appears George will be added to Jacksonville’s 53-man roster. Having also reportedly agreed to a deal with Sherrod Martin, the Jags will have to remove two players from their active roster to finalize the signings.
