Cowboys Promote LB Chris Covington https://www.profootballrumors.com/2019/12/cowboys-promote-lb-chris-covington https://www.profootballrumors.com/2019/12/cowboys-promote-lb-chris-covington#respond Sat, 14 Dec 2019 18:52:47 +0000 https://www.profootballrumors.com/?p=161569 Chris Covington is getting another chance on the Cowboys active roster. Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News reports (via Twitter) that the linebacker has been promoted from the practice squad. Offensive tackle Caleb Benenoch was waived in a corresponding roster move.

The 2018 sixth-round pick has spent his entire career with the Cowboys organization. He appeared in five games as a rookie, compiling one tackle. Otherwise, he was inactive for Dallas’s other 11 contests.

Covington had a standout game in the Cowboys’ preseason opener, finishing with six tackles. However, he was waived by the Cowboys at the end of August, and he subsequently caught on with their practice squad. He had a brief stint on the active roster back in September.

As Gehlken notes, Sean Lee is questionable for Sunday’s game against the Rams. The linebacker missed an entire week of practice as he recovers from a thigh and pectoral issue. If Lee is forced out of the lineup, then Gehlken opines that undrafted rookie Luke Gifford would earn the majority of snaps at Sam linebacker. Covington would most likely be on the roster for emergency depth.

Cowboys Get Down To 53 https://www.profootballrumors.com/2019/08/cowboys-get-down-to-53 https://www.profootballrumors.com/2019/08/cowboys-get-down-to-53#comments Sun, 01 Sep 2019 01:27:28 +0000 https://www.profootballrumors.com/?p=151889 The Cowboys have made their cuts to get down to 53 players. Nothing too surprising on this list, although there is at least one interesting takeaway. The Cowboys cut three running backs, leaving Alfred Morris and Tony Pollard as the only two currently with the team. That’s a strong indicator that the team is expecting Ezekiel Elliott back before Week 1.

Receiver Devin Smith also made the roster as their final receiver, which is a nice feel-good story. Drafted by the Jets 37th overall back in 2015, multiple ACL tears derailed his promising career. Smith has had brutal injury luck and hasn’t appeared in a game since 2016, so this is nice to see.

Waived:

OL Jake Campos

CB Donovan Olumba

LB Kyle Quiero

LS Drew Scott

Waived/InjuredL

TE Codey McElroy

CB Tyvis Powell

S Jameill Showers

Reserve/PUP:

Reserve/Injured

DE Jalen Jelks

WR Jon’Vea Johnson

Cowboys Sign 8 Draft Choices https://www.profootballrumors.com/2018/05/cowboys-sign-leighton-vander-esch-7-other-draftees https://www.profootballrumors.com/2018/05/cowboys-sign-leighton-vander-esch-7-other-draftees#comments Fri, 11 May 2018 21:05:36 +0000 https://www.profootballrumors.com/?p=107413 The Cowboys now have all but one of their nine 2018 draft choices signed. Headlined by linebacker Leighton Vander Esch, Dallas reached agreements with everyone but third-round wide receiver Michael Gallup on Friday, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports. Here’s the full list of signees:

The structure of the Boise State product’s contract slightly held up the team’s proceedings with its top draft investment, per the Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s Clarence Hill (Twitter link), but he’s now signed up. Vander Esch will earn approximately $11.847MM and collect a $6.696MM signing bonus.

Vander Esch met with numerous teams that held picks in the middle of the first round, and despite needs at both pass-catching positions, the Cowboys selected the Mountain West Conference standout. Connor Williams also didn’t play a position of dire need, given Dallas’ three All-Pro linemen, but he’s now in the mix for the team’s left guard spot.

Despite being unsigned, Gallup is working out at the Cowboys’ rookie minicamp on Friday. Many third-round picks around the league have yet to sign. This is an annual tradition due to the CBA’s gray area regarding third-rounders’ compensation.
