Seahawks Place RB Rashaad Penny On IR

Some Seahawks Saturday roster reshuffling will bring in multiple reinforcements but move former first-round pick Rashaad Penny back to a familiar place. Penny is back on IR, Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times tweets.

Penny’s contract year is off to a rough start, with the former San Diego State standout having played just seven snaps — all in Week 1 — before going down with a calf injury. He is now out for Seattle’s next three games.

While the Penny pick surprised most at the time, he has impressed at points. But he has not overtaken former seventh-round pick Chris Carson in Seattle’s lineup and has run into extensive injury misfortune. Penny tore an ACL late in the 2019 season and did not return until December 2020. He underwent another knee surgery this offseason. The Seahawks declined Penny’s fifth-year option in May.

Better news comes at other positions for the 1-2 Seahawks. They activated tackle Cedric Ogbuehi and tight end Colby Parkinson off IR. Parkinson suffered a foot fracture for the second straight summer. His return will help a team that has Gerald Everett on its reserve/COVID-19 list. Everett tested positive for the coronavirus this week and has not submitted a negative test yet. Ogbuehi’s return to work comes at a key juncture, with starting right tackle Brandon Shell ruled out for Week 4 with an ankle injury.

A fourth-round pick out of Stanford last year, Parkinson has played in just six games as a pro. But this year’s foot fracture was not as serious as the injury he suffered in 2020. Parkinson’s return stands to help a Seahawks team that has seen extensive tight end unavailability over the past few seasons.

Seahawks Shift Cedric Ogbuehi To IR

Cedric Ogbuehi‘s second Seahawks season will not start on time. The team placed the veteran tackle on IR Thursday. This will sideline Ogbuehi until at least Week 4.

The former first-round pick is dealing with a biceps injury presently, so the Seahawks will need to adjust their second-string offensive line plans. Ogbuehi re-signed with Seattle this offseason. Going into his seventh year, Ogbuehi is expected to be Brandon Shell‘s primary backup at right tackle.

Ogbuehi played just eight games in 2020, starting four, but did enough to return to the Seahawks — his third NFL team. The Bengals drafted Ogbuehi in 2015, but after he did not meet expectations, the Texas A&M product had to settle for a low-cost Jaguars deal in 2019 before coming to Seattle.

The Seahawks added a tackle on the waiver wire Wednesday, bringing in ex-49ers blocker Dakoda Shepley. He joins Jamarco Jones and rookie Stone Forsythe as backup Hawks tackles. Though Shell and Duane Brown comprise Seattle’s optimal tackle duo, Brown remains out of the mix due to a hold-in effort. The Pro Bowler has not practiced since last season, putting the Seahawks in a tight spot as the season nears.

Seahawks To Re-Sign OL Cedric Ogbuehi

Cedric Ogbuehi is heading back to Seattle. The offensive tackle is re-signing with the Seahawks, reports Mike Garafolo of NFL Network (on Twitter).

When Ogbuehi joined the Seahawks last offseason, he was expected to play a backup role for the team. However, an injury to Brandon Shell led to Ogbuehi garnering his first starts since 2017. The 28-year-old ended up seeing time in eight games (four starts) for Seattle, appearing in 26-percent of his team’s offensive snaps.

The 2015 first-round pick out of Texas A&M spent his first four seasons with the Bengals, starting 25 of his 35 games. After having his fifth-year option declined, Ogbuehi only got into two games with Cincy in 2018, and he ended up moving on to the Jaguars for the 2019 campaign.

Quarterback Russell Wilson has been clamoring for reinforcement along the offensive line, and the Seahawks have somewhat been obliging. Bob Condotta of the The Seattle Times reports (via Twitter) that Ogbuehi is now the 12th offensive lineman under contract for next season.

Seahawks Sign OL Cedric Ogbuehi

Cedric Ogbuehi is moving to Seattle. NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo tweets that the Seahawks have signed the offensive lineman. ESPN’s Jordan Schultz was first with the news (via Twitter).

The 2015 first-round pick spent the first four seasons of his career with the Bengals. He started 25 games between the 2016 and 2017 seasons, but he was limited to only two games in 2018.

He signed a one-year deal with the Jaguars last offseason, and he proceeded to appear in 14 games for his new squad.

The Seahawks have been busy adding to their offensive line. Over the past two days, the team has also added Brandon Shell and B.J. Finney.

AFC Notes: Stidham, Jags, Browns, Bolts

Although Tom Brady continuing to play at a high level into his early 40s has allowed the Patriots to table their need to identify a long-term successor for many years, their recent extension/2019 pay raise brings this issue back to the forefront. The Pats, however, are pleased with their latest quarterback draft pick. Fourth-round rookie Jarrett Stidham has “blown away expectations” this offseason, Jeff Howe of The Athletic notes (subscription required), adding that he is ahead of where Jimmy Garoppolo was at this point during his first NFL summer. Stidham has taken first-team reps in camp and moved the Patriots to move Danny Etling to wide receiver. He finished 14-for-24 for 179 yards and a touchdown in New England’s preseason opener Thursday. While the Auburn alum does not profile as a classic Brady successor type, the Patriots certainly appear encouraged by their developmental prospect.

As we wind down preseason Week 1, here is the latest from the AFC:

  • A.J. Cann has served as the Jaguars‘ starting right guard since his rookie season in 2015. He is not a lock to reprise his role in 2019. Cann is battling converted tackle Will Richardson for the spot, with Doug Marrone indicating (via Hays Carlyon of 1010 XL, on Twitter) Brandon Thomas is also in the mix here. A 2018 fourth-rounder, Richardson looks like the favorite to win this job thus far, Carlyon adds (via Twitter). Richardson has yet to play an NFL down; he hit IR in October of his rookie year. Thomas has hung around for six NFL summers, with the 2014 third-round 49ers pick having never played in a regular-season game. He’s bounced on and off the Jaguars’ roster and practice squad since 2017. Cann has three years remaining on a contract he signed in 2018.
  • With Cam Robinson potentially set to have a delayed start to the season, Marrone said the Jaguars are considering free agent additions Cedric Ogbuehi and Leonard Wester at left tackle. Longtime Jags backup Josh Wells is vying for that temp job as well. Second-round rookie Jawaan Taylor is set to start at right tackle.
  • Had Antonio Callaway not received a four-game suspension, the second-year Browns wideout might not have been able to go in Week 1 anyway. Callaway suffered a high ankle sprain in Cleveland’s preseason opener, per Freddie Kitchens (via ohio.com’s Nate Ulrich, on Twitter). The Browns will now be without two of their 2018 pass catchers, with Duke Johnson having been traded and Callaway out until at least October. Fortunately, they acquired Odell Beckham Jr. this offseason.
  • Chargers tight end Andrew Vollert suffered ACL damage in the team’s preseason opener, and Anthony Lynn said (via ESPN.com’s Eric Williams, on Twitter) the second-year UDFA will miss the season. The Bolts signed Vollert in May.

Jaguars Sign OL Cedric Ogbuehi, WR Chris Conley

The Jaguars are starting to shape their offense around Nick Foles. Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network reports (via Twitter) that the team has signed offensive tackle Cedric Ogbuehi and wideout Chris Conley.

The 26-year-old Ogbuehi was selected in the first round of the 2015 draft by the Bengals, but he only appeared in 35 total games through four years. The Bengals declined his fifth-year option back in May, and the lineman proceeded to appear in only two games in 2018.

The Jaguars do have a major need at offensive tackle. The team currently has Cam Robinson slotted in as one of the starters, and the former second-rounder did take a step forward last season. 2018 fourth-rounder Will Richardson is projected to start on the other side of the line, although he missed his entire rookie campaign with a knee injury.

Conley, 26, is an intriguing addition to the Jacksonville offense. The 26-year-old has battled injuries and inconsistency throughout his career, but he still put together a solid season with the Chiefs in 2018. The wideout finished the season having hauled in 32 receptions for 334 yards and a career-high five touchdowns.

Conley should have a chance to contribute in Jacksonville. The Jags’ current receiver corps consists of Marqise Lee, Dede Westbrook, DJ Chark, and Keelan Cole.

Jaguars To Host OT Cedric Ogbuehi

Cedric Ogbuehi is set to visit with the Jaguars, reports ESPN’s Jordan Schultz (via Twitter). This is the first reported visit for the free agent offensive tackle.
