Colts Reach Roster Max

The Colts reached the 53-man limit on Saturday by cutting a number of players, including running back Charcandrick West. West, who has been toggled on and off of the Chiefs’ roster in recent years, hooked on with the Colts less than two weeks ago. Despite the season-ending injury suffered by D’Onta Foreman, he wasn’t able to make the final cut.

Also among the cuts – J’Marcus Webb, one of the club’s Week 1 starting tackles in 2018. Webb’s season was mostly lost to injury, and he’ll have to hook on elsewhere for 2019.

Free Agent Rumors: Seahawks, Texans, Bills

With the first wave of NFL free agency largely in the books, teams have begun hosting lesser-known options that remain on the market:

  • The Seahawks met with free agent defensive tackle Caraun Reid on Thursday, according to Field Yates of ESPN.com (Twitter link). The 27-year-old Reid has bounced around the league, but spent most of the 2018 campaign in Dallas, compiling 10 tackles and a half-sack on 28% playtime. Seattle lost defensive tackle Shamar Stephen in free agency, meaning the club is looking for depth behind Jarran Reed and Nazair Jones.
  • Wide receiver Jaydon Mickens visited with the Texans today, reports Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle. Mickens is a wideout-in-name-only, as he’s garnered only six total receptions over his two-year career (all in 2017). Instead, Mickens is a core special-teamer, with a focus on punt returns. He handled 27 for Jacksonville last season, managing 10.6 yards per return with one touchdown. Houston is already one of the best return teams in the NFL, per Football Outsiders‘ metrics, and is bringing back DeAndre Carter, who split return duty last season.
  • The Bills hosted linebacker Mark Nzeocha on Thursday, per Yates (Twitter link). Like Mickens, Nzeocha is primarily a special teams player, topping 60% ST playtime in each of the past two years with the 49ers. But he saw a bit of action on defense in 2018, starting three games and playing on 13% of San Francisco’s defensive snaps. He’d give Buffalo depth at linebacker.

Cowboys Sign DT Caraun Reid

It didn’t take long for Caraun Reid to find a new job. Jon Machota of the Dallas News reports (via Twitter) that the Cowboys will be signing the defensive tackle. Dallas is expected to waive/injured Richard Ash in order to open a roster spot. Meanwhile, ESPN’s Todd Archer reports that the Cowboys will also be signing safety Dominick Sanders, and the team is expected to place Jameill Showers on the IR.

The 26-year-old Reid had been battling a hamstring issue throughout training camp, but reports indicate that he’s now healthy. With the Colts rostering plenty of depth at the position, the organization decided to release Reid over the weekend so he could quickly find his next gig. The 2014 fifth-round pick out of Princeton contributed during his first two years in the league, including a 2015 campaign with the Lions where he compiled 29 tackles and two sacks in 14 games (12 starts). After playing in seven games with the Chargers in 2016, Reid tore his ACL, and he’s proceeded to play in only one game since that time.

In Dallas, Reid will be replacing Ash, who compiled 15 tackles in 10 games (two starts) for the Cowboys last season. The 26-year-old had suffered a knee injury during Saturday’s preseason game. Reid will presumably slide into the open spot on the depth chart, and he’ll compete with Jihad Ward, Datone Jones, and Lewis Neal to be the primary backup behind Brian Price and Maliek Collins.

Sanders worked out for the Cowboys last week. The Georgia product set a school-record with 16 interceptions, and he briefly caught on with the Eagles after going undrafted in this year’s draft. He’ll be replacing Showers, who tore his ACL this past weekend.

Colts To Release DT Caraun Reid

Caraun Reid is going to have to find a new gig. NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reports (via Twitter) that the Colts have released the defensive tackle.

The 26-year-old had been battling a hamstring issue throughout training camp, but Rapoport relays that the lineman is now fully healthy. Considering the Colts depth at the position, the organization decided to release Reid now, allowing him to find another job before the start of the regular season. Rapoport opines that some teams will surely have interest in the defensive tackle.

He joined the Colts back in December, but he didn’t appear in a game for the organization. With Grover Stewart and Al Woods slotted in as the team’s starting defensive tackles, Reid was never going to play a major role for the Colts. Now, Indy will likely turn to Rakeem Nunez-Roches and Anthony Johnson as backup options.

Colts Place C Ryan Kelly, LB Jon Bostic On IR

The Colts have placed two starters on injured reserve. Linebacker Jon Bostic and center Ryan Kelly will both be shut down in advance of Saturday’s penultimate game against the Ravens. In a related move, the team has signed free agent defensive tackle Caraun Reid. Ryan Kelly (Vertical)

Kelly has played only seven games this season thanks to injuries. The center missed the start of the year due to foot surgery. Unfortunately, a concussion in Week 12 has kept him out of action for the last three games. It’s hardly the encore that the No. 18 overall pick in the 2016 draft was hoping for.

Bostic spent all of 2016 on IR but managed to start in 14 games in 2017. His season ends with a career-high 97 tackles along with one sack, one fumble recovery, and three passes defended. He also graded out as Pro Football Focus’ No. 40 linebacker in the NFL, a career best. He’s eligible for free agency this offseason but it seems likely that the Colts will discuss an extension with him before he can reach the open market.
