Browns Notes: Collins, Johnson, Perriman

Although the Browns are not linked to a first-round quarterback for the first time in ages, this will be a pivotal offseason for a rising team. Here is the latest from Cleveland, courtesy of the Cleveland Plain Dealer’s Mary Kay Cabot:

  • It’s a near-certainty Jamie Collins will not play on an $11.75MM cap number this season. The Browns are likely going to restructure that deal or make a move to trade or release the outside linebacker, Cabot notes. John Dorsey met with Collins’ agent over the weekend, and the second-year GM characterized the highly paid ‘backer’s 2018 season as inconsistent. Collins has been the NFL’s highest-paid off-ball linebacker for nearly two years, though his deal contains no more guarantees. It would save the Browns $9.25MM by cutting Collins. Cleveland has Christian Kirksey signed long-term and has received quality play from Joe Schobert, with newcomer Genard Avery showing promise as a rookie.
  • The Kareem Hunt addition has prompted other teams to inquire about Duke Johnson‘s availability, Cabot reports. Three teams are interested in Johnson, she adds, despite the Browns’ pass-catching back coming off a down year. Johnson signed an extension in 2018, but the Browns now have Hunt in the fold to play alongside Nick Chubb. Dorsey said last month Johnson’s roster spot is not in jeopardy “yet” and confirmed he remains committed to the receiving back, as a running back, going forward. Hunt’s suspension timetable remains uncertain, but it is likely he will draw a ban longer than six games, thus keeping the need for Johnson present.
  • Dorsey has been in contact with Breshad Perriman and agent Drew Rosenhaus about a possible re-up, but Cabot adds the sides are not close on terms. Dorsey said he would “love” to have the former first-round pick, who ran a 4.25-second 40-yard dash at the 2015 Combine, back due to his speed-size combination. A constant injury risk in Baltimore before being waived last year, Perriman caught just 16 passes with Cleveland. However, he posted a 21.3-yard average as an intriguing deep threat.
  • The Browns will give Greg Robinson another chance to earn their starting left tackle job, agreeing to a second contract with the former No. 2 overall pick.

AFC North Notes: Browns, Perriman, Bell

Former Redskins and 49ers GM Scot McCloughan is not working for the Browns this offseason, GM John Dorsey told reporters (via Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon-Journal). McCloughan hooked on with the Browns as a consultant last year and championed Baker Mayfield as the top selection in the buildup to the draft. The exec has consulted with multiple teams as a freelancer in recent years, so he may continue on that front in advance of the 2019 draft.

Here’s more from Cleveland:

  • Dorsey has spoken with wide receiver Breshad Perriman multiple times at the combine (via Mary Kay Cabot of The Plain Dealer). There’s mutual interest between the Browns and the speedster, though he could garner sizable offers amidst a weak free agent class for the position. The former first-round pick caught only 16 passes for 340 yards and two touchdowns in his ten games with the Browns, but he made some big plays.
  • The Steelers opted against using the transition tag on Le’Veon Bell because the league informed them that it would cost $14.54MM, not the sub-$10MM figure they were hoping for (via PFT). Had the league given the Steelers the news they were hoping for, they could have tagged Bell and worked to trade him in exchange for draft capital.
  • Ravens free agent tight end Nick Boyle has almost 20 teams interested in his services, according to Tony Pauline of DraftAnalyst.com. Boyle doesn’t quite light up a stat sheet, but he has blossomed into one of the league’s best blocking tight ends. The high level of interest in Boyle jibes with what Pauline has heard about this year’s draft – this year’s best TEs are likely to be overdrafted.

Browns Discussing Deals With Rashard Higgins, Breshad Perriman, Greg Robinson

The Browns signed former first-round picks Greg Robinson and Breshad Perriman on low-cost, one-year deals in 2018. They are interested in longer-term partnerships.

John Dorsey said (via Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com) discussions with both players’ representatives are ongoing, along with RFA-to-be Rashard Higgins.

Robinson said recently he wants to stay in Cleveland. The former No. 2 overall pick has not come close to living up to that draft slot but did start the final eight Browns games at left tackle, replacing rookie UDFA Desmond Harrison in the team’s first post-Joe Thomas season. Pro Football Focus graded Robinson as its No. 63 tackle (out of 80 full-time qualifiers) this season.

“Sometimes you have to be a little patient with guys like that. You have to earn their trust,” Dorsey said of Robinson. “He did everything he was asked and everything we thought he would since we signed him in late June.”

Added after a dismal Ravens stay, Perriman averaged 21.3 yards per catch with the Browns. Two of his 16 receptions went for touchdowns. While Perriman’s stock is nowhere near what it was coming into the league, the oft-injured wideout played well down the stretch with Cleveland. He recorded two two-catch, 75-plus-yard games in the Browns’ final four contests. If retained, Perriman would fit in as an auxiliary weapon alongside Jarvis Landry and Antonio Callaway.

Although Higgins was a Sashi Brown-era investment, he may figure into Dorsey’s plans — either on a tender or longer-term pact. The former fifth-round pick enjoyed his most productive season in 2018, hauling in 39 passes for 572 yards and four touchdowns. While Higgins was the Browns’ fourth-leading receiver, each of those figures represented career-high marks.

Browns Sign WR Breshad Perriman

Breshad Perriman has found a new home. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports (via Twitter) that the wideout has signed with the Browns. To make room on the roster, the team is placing wideout Derrick Willies on the injured reserve (via Ohio.com’s Nate Ulrich on Twitter).

The 2015 first-round pick was released by the Ravens in September following three underwhelming seasons with the team. After sitting out his entire rookie campaign due to injury, Perriman managed to show a bit of promise in 2016, hauling in 33 catches for 499 yards and three scores. However, he seemingly took a step back in 2017, catching only 10 passes for 77 yards.

The 25-year-old later caught on with the Redskins, but he was waived by the team before appearing in a game. A number of teams had taken the time to audition Perriman following his Baltimore and Washington stints, including the Eagles, Patriots, Jaguars, Jets, Giants, Bills, and Vikings.

While the Browns had never been reported as a suitor, the pairing makes plenty of sense. The team’s receiver corps has been shaken up over the past few months, and they’re currently dealing with injuries to Rashard Higgins and Willies. While Perriman won’t pass Jarvis Landry or Antonio Callaway on the depth chart, he could earn some playing time over Rod Streater and Damion Ratley.

We heard yesterday that Willies, an undrafted free agent out of Texas Tech, had broken his collarbone during practice (although Ulrich notes that he won’t be officially diagnosed until next week). The rookie had three receptions for 61 yards during last weekend’s win over the Ravens, and he was set to earn more playing time with Higgins sideline for at least the next two weeks.

Patriots Work Out WR Breshad Perriman

The Patriots worked out free agent wide receiver Breshad Perriman today, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.com (Twitter link).

New England’s wideout situation has been dire for most of the season, but the club’s depth chart is beginning to come into focus. Not only is the recently-acquired Josh Gordon expected to suit up this week, but Julian Edelman will return from suspension in Week 5. Those two options, along with holdovers Chris Hogan, Phillip Dorsett, and Cordarrelle Patterson, give the Patriots a viable receiving corps.

Perriman, the 26th overall selection in the 2015 draft, has never lived up to his draft billing, as injuries and ineffectiveness have prevented him from reaching his potential. After missing his entire rookie campaign, Perriman posted 33 receptions in 2016, but managed only 10 catches last year. He signed with the Redskins earlier this month, but lasted less than a week on Washington’s roster.

A number of teams have expressed interest in Perriman this year, as he’s worked out for the the Jets, Giants, Bills, Vikings, and Eagles over the past month.

Redskins Cut WR Breshad Perriman

Breshad Perriman‘s stint in Washington has already come to an end. ProFootballTalk.com reports (via Twitter) that the Redskins have released the wide receiver. According to PFT, the organization “indicated it could bring him back in the future.” Meanwhile, ESPN’s John Keim tweets that the team will be promoting running back Kapri Bibbs from the practice squad to take the open roster spot.

The Ravens finally bailed on the 2015 first-rounder out of Central Florida in early September. After sitting out his entire rookie campaign due to injury, Perriman went on to have a pair of underwhelming seasons in Baltimore. He showed a bit of promise in 2016, hauling in 33 catches for 499 yards and three scores. However, he seemingly took a step back in 2017, catching only 10 passes for 77 yards.

The Redskins ended up signing the 25-year-old earlier this week, but they also added fellow wideout Michael Floyd on the same day. Following today’s move, the team has five healthy receivers on their active roster: Floyd, Josh Doctson, Jamison Crowder, Paul Richardson, and Brian Quick (Maurice Harris missed last week due to a concussion).

Bibbs joined the Redskins practice squad last November, and he ended up compiling 79 rushing yards on 21 carries in three games (he also added another 14 receptions for 128 yards). He was cut at the end of the preseason but once again caught on with the practice squad. With Rob Kelley joining Derrius Guice and Byron Marshall on the team’s injured reserve list, the Redskins were only rostering three running backs in Adrian Peterson, Chris Thompson, and Samaje Perine. Bibbs will likely slide behind that trio on the depth chart, and he could play a role on special teams (seven career kick returns).

Redskins To Sign Breshad Perriman

One of the teams that contacted the Browns about Josh Gordon will sign another former AFC North pass-catcher.

The Redskins will sign Breshad Perriman after working him out earlier Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com tweets.

The former Ravens first-round pick has not made much of an impression in three NFL seasons, years largely marred by injuries. Maladies to current Washington receivers prompted this deal, however. Trey Quinn, Cam Sims and Robert Davis are all on IR. Perriman joins Brian Quick and Jehu Chesson in being in-season Redskins additions, although Quick spent last season in Washington as well.

Perriman caught 33 passes for 499 yards and three touchdowns in 2016. He missed all of his rookie season and part of his sophomore campaign due to injuries. He caught 10 passes for 77 yards in 2017 and was a Ravens cut prior to this regular season’s outset.

The Central Florida product just turned 25 last week, however, and the Redskins will see if they can salvage some of the potential he carried into the NFL as a prospect.

Perriman, the 26th overall selection in the 2015 draft, has never lived up to his draft billing, as injuries and ineffectiveness have prevented him from reaching his potential. After missing his entire rookie campaign, Perriman posted 33 receptions in 2016, but managed only 10 catches last year.

Washington doesn’t have a glaring need at wide receiver, as their pass-catching group is mostly healthy. Paul Richardson was listed as questionable for Sunday’s game with a shoulder injury but ultimately played, while Maurice Harris is recovered from a concussion but has still been inactive both of the Redskins’ contests. Jamison Crowder, Josh Doctson, and the recently-added Brian Quick and Jehu Chesson round out Washington’s depth chart.

Perriman certainly isn’t wanting for free agent interest, as he’s met with the Jets, Giants, Bills, Vikings, and Eagles since getting cut by the Ravens.

Eagles To Work Out WR Breshad Perriman

Philadelphia currently has six receivers on its roster, but Alshon Jeffery is expected to be sidelined for several more weeks. Nelson Agholor, Mike Wallace, and DeAndre Carter saw most of the work in the Eagles’ season opener, while Shelton Gibson and Markus Wheaton are also on the club’s roster.

Perriman certainly isn’t wanting for free agent interest, as he’s met with the Jets, Giants, Bills, and Vikings since getting cut by the Ravens.
