Brady Quinn

Extra Points: Colts, Rams, Lowery, Lions

While Colts GM Ryan Grigson didn’t reveal anything too significant during his conversation with reporters this week at the combine in Indianapolis, Stephen Holder of the Indianapolis Star came away with the sense that the team would make “consequential moves” in free agency next month. With possible at holes at safety, running back, and perhaps wide receiver, as well as a need for pass rushers, the Colts are armed with plenty of cap room and have the ability to make impact additions.

Here’s more from around the NFL:

  • According to Tony Pauline of DraftInsider.net (Twitter link), word from the combine has the Rams preparing to target linebackers early in the draft. All three of St. Louis’ regular linebackers in 2014 received negative grades, according to Pro Football Focus (subscription required).
  • There have been no contract discussions between the Falcons and safety Dwight Lowery yet, tweets Vaughn McClure of ESPN.com. Lowery is eligible for unrestricted free agency next month.
  • Speaking to Tori Petry of DetroitLions.com (video link), Lions GM Martin Mayhew singled out quarterback Dan Orlovsky and long snapper Don Muhlbach as two under-the-radar potential free agents that the team is optimistic about re-signing.
  • Former Browns and Eagles executive Joe Banner cautions fans not to think that every team is having the same Marcus Mariota vs. Jameis Winston debate that the media is having. According to Banner (via Twitter), many clubs already have Mariota “clearly” at the top of their quarterback rankings.
  • Former first-round quarterback Brady Quinn, who was in camp with the Dolphins in 2014, is planning to give it one last shot in the NFL this year in the hopes of landing a regular season roster spot, tweets Ben Volin of the Boston Globe.

Dolphins Cut Brady Quinn, Seven Others

3:11pm: The Dolphins must officially remove 11 players from their active roster today, and while the team has yet to announce those moves, a pair of cuts have been reported so far. Veteran quarterback Brady Quinn passed along word of his own release, tweeting that his time with the team was “short-lived,” but that he “enjoyed every second.” Besides Quinn, wide receiver Armon Binns will also be one of Miami’s roster casualties, tweets Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald.

Quinn, who spent time in 2013 with the Seahawks, Jets and Rams, didn’t see any action during the regular season, and didn’t join a new team this year until about two weeks ago, when he signed with Miami. Viewed as a stopgap signing for a team in need of healthy camp arms, Quinn was never a threat to unseat backup signal-caller Matt Moore, let alone starter Ryan Tannehill. Perhaps now if the team has injuries problems in the regular season though, Quinn will get a look.

As for Binns, his best NFL season came in 2012, when he caught 24 total balls during his time with the Bengals and Dolphins. After missing the 2013 campaign, he didn’t appear to be in Miami’s plans for 2014.

Dolphins Sign Brady Quinn, Release Pat Devlin

8:51pm: To make room for Quinn, the Dolphins will release quarterback Pat Devlin, tweets Fox Sports’ Mike Garafolo. He adds that the Ravens could be among the teams interested in the 26-year-old.

Devlin has yet to appear in a regular season game since signing with the Dolphins as an undrafted free agent in 2011. He seemed to have the upper hand on rookie Brock Jensen for the team’s third quarterback spot, but he’s battled nagging injuries and hasn’t practiced since August 2nd (as the Miami Herald’s Armando Salguero tweets).

6:32pm: After auditioning a trio of veteran quarterbacks, the Dolphins have decided to sign Brady Quinn, reports NFL.com’s Jeff Darlington (via Twitter).

As Matt Moore and Pat Devlin recover from their respective ailments, the Dolphins was looking to add a veteran presence behind Ryan Tannehill. The team had also reportedly taken a look at Rex Grossman and John Skelton.

This will likely be the 29-year-old’s final opportunity to stick around in the NFL. Quinn hasn’t lived up to expectations since being selected 22nd-overall by the Browns in 2007. He didn’t see consistent playing time until 2009, but he did little to impress during his brief opportunity. He made 10 appearances that year, finishing with 1,339 yards and seven touchdowns.

His other notable season came with the Chiefs in 2012, when he threw for 1,141 yards, two touchdowns and eight interceptions. In his two seasons as a bona fide starter, Pro Football Focus’ advanced metrics (subscription required) ranked him among the bottom-six quarterbacks in the league.

Quinn spent 2013 with the Seahawks, Jets and Rams, but he didn’t see any action during the regular season. He had previously worked out with the Patriots and according to ProFootballFocus.com’s Mike Florio, Quinn was set to begin a career in broadcasting with FOX Sports.

AFC East Notes: Jets, Dolphins, Bills, Tyms

Let’s round up a few Monday items from around the AFC East….

  • In the wake of injuries to multiple cornerbacks, the Jets will bring in some free agents for workouts, Rex Ryan confirmed today to reporters, including Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News (Twitter link). Meanwhile, GM John Idzik said he has “no regrets whatsoever” about his free agent decisions at the cornerback position, tweets Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post.
  • Despite working out for the Dolphins today, Rex Grossman is unlikely to sign with the team, tweets Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald. According to Salguero, Grossman has a visit lined up with another club.
  • Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald adds (via Twitter) that the Dolphins also probably won’t sign John Skelton. Brady Quinn remains a possibility, though the team could explore other options or simply stand pat.
  • As the sale process for the franchise continues, commissioner Roger Goodell and the NFL have renewed their push for the Bills to build a new stadium in Western New York, according to Jerry Zremski of the Buffalo News. In recent conversations with Governor Andrew Cuomo and Senator Charles Schumer, Goodell has said he’d like to see the team remain in Buffalo, but that a new stadium would have to be part of the equation.
  • Patriots wideout Brian Tyms, who had a strong preseason debut with the team, is facing a four-game suspension to start the regular season if he earns a spot on the roster, explaining to Tom E. Curran of CSNNE.com that the ban is a result of testing positive for Adderall. “I’ve had a prescription for it since I was nine,” Tyms said. “It costs money to get all that stuff situated. Money which I didn’t have to spend. It was my fault. I should have brought it to the NFL and said, ‘Hey, I take this from time to time’ before it got to that point. But it wasn’t like I’m using it as something to boost my ratings.”

Dolphins Auditioning Grossman, Quinn, Skelton

9:31am: Brady Quinn and John Skelton are among the other quarterbacks being considered by the Dolphins, according to Jackson (via Twitter).

8:46am: Former Bears and Redskins quarterback Rex Grossman will audition for the Dolphins today, according to agent Drew Rosenhaus, who confirmed in a WSVN-Fox segment on Sunday that his client will be among the quarterbacks working out for the club (link via Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald).

While Grossman hasn’t seen regular-season NFL action since starting 13 games during the 2011 season, he has spent the last several seasons in Washington. There were rumblings earlier in the offseason that the veteran signal-caller may land in Cleveland, where former Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan is now running the Browns’ offense, but a deal never materialized, and Grossman has remained on the free agent market all year.

For the Dolphins, Ryan Tannehill is firmly installed as the starter, but backups Matt Moore and Pat Devlin have battled various ailments this summer, increasing the potential need for veteran insurance. Moore, who is well-paid for a backup, still appears likely to enter the season as the club’s No. 2 quarterback, but Devlin’s roster spot could be in jeopardy.

Although it’s not clear yet which QBs will be joining Grossman for the Dolphins’ tryout today, Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald suggests the team should take a look at Tim Tebow. Tebow, who has been working out and staying in shape, has seemingly drawn no interest from NFL teams this summer, prompting Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk to explore why the former Bronco can’t even get a look on a 90-man offseason roster.

Brady Quinn Worked Out For Patriots

1:08pm: Field Yates of ESPN.com (on Twitter) confirms that Quinn worked out for the Patriots.

11:40am: Brady Quinn has signed on with FOX Sports as an analyst but he hasn’t given up on playing in the NFL Earlier today on The Dan Patrick Show Friday, the Notre Dame QB said he had a workout with an unnamed club on Monday.

It went well,” Quinn said, according to Mike Wilkening of Pro Football Talk. “In this particular situation, though, they need something to happen in order for me to possibly be there.

Quinn went on to say FOX would be “flexible” in allowing him to continue to stay ready for another opportunity to play while also working for the network. And while the 29-year-old declined to identify the team in question, Andrew Perloff of Sports Illustrated (on Twitter) hears that Quinn’s audition was for the Patriots. Quinn said that “something needs to happen” for him to sign with the unnamed team in reference and Perloff wonders aloud if that could be in reference to a trade of Ryan Mallett. Mallett, drafted in 2011, is now coming to the end of his rookie contract, and will be a free agent after this coming season. However, Coach Bill Belichick indicated back in May that he wasn’t “that interested” in trading the 26-year-old.

The former first-round pick had stints with the Seahawks, Jets, and Rams in 2013. In 2012, Quinn started eight games for the Chiefs.
