Chiefs Activate CB Bashaud Breeland

Bashaud Breeland should make his 2020 debut this weekend. The Chiefs have officially activated the cornerback off the reserve/suspended list. To make room on the roster, Kansas City placed rookie defensive end Mike Danna on injured reserve.

Breeland joined the Chiefs prior to last season, and he proceeded to appear in all 16 games (15 starts), compiling 48 tackles, eight passes defended, and two interceptions. The defensive back also started each of Kansas City’s three playoff games, including their Super Bowl win where he finished with an interception and a team-high seven tackles.

The 28-year-old inked a one-year, $3MM deal to stick with the Chiefs this offseason, but he was later suspended for the first four games of the 2020 campaign after violating the league’s substance abuse policy. Breeland should play an immediate role for Kansas City, although the young secondary hasn’t really struggled without him. The Chiefs rank third in the NFL in interceptions, and they’ve got contributions from the likes of Rashad Fenton and fourth-round rookie L’Jarius Sneed.

Danna, a fifth-round rookie out of Michigan, has appeared in all four games for Kansas City, and he played at least 43-percent of the team’s defensive snaps through the first three weeks of the season. Danna suffered a hamstring injury during the Chiefs’ win over the Patriots on Monday, forcing the rookie to miss at least the next three weeks.

Bashaud Breeland Facing 4-Game Ban

The Chiefs may be without one of their top cornerbacks for the first quarter of their season. Bashaud Breeland is facing a four-game suspension for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com tweets.

Breeland re-signed with the Chiefs in March but was arrested in April on charges of resisting arrest, possession of an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, marijuana possession, and driving without a license.

Kansas City opted not to devote many resources to cornerback this offseason, filling other needs with its top draft picks. Breeland and fourth-round selection L’Jarius Sneed represent the defending Super Bowl champions’ primary moves at corner this year. The team also lost two-year contributor Kendall Fuller in free agency. Breeland signed his second one-year deal with the Chiefs, this one for $4.5MM.

This will mark a setback for the Chiefs, who lost starters Laurent Duvernay-Tardif and Damien Williams to opt-outs. Kansas City, however, replaced Duvernay-Tardif quickly. Were the Super Bowl contenders to operate in the same fashion, the likes of Aqib Talib, Dre Kirkpatrick, Tramon Williams and ex-Chief Brandon Carr represent the highest-profile outside cornerbacks available. Slot corner Logan Ryan is one of the biggest names left in free agency, however.

Breeland, 28, intercepted two passes, recovered two fumbles and made 48 tackles in his first Chiefs season. The former second-round pick worked as a regular starter. He stands to miss games against the Texans, Chargers, Ravens and Patriots.

West Notes: Chiefs, Irvin, Amukamara

The Chiefs moved on from their longest-tenured player this offseason, jettisoning 15-year punter Dustin Colquitt. Although the team with Patrick Mahomes negotiations looming and Chris Jones attached to a franchise tag created cap space by cutting Colquitt, the defending Super Bowl champions also identified his potential successor in its UDFA class. Chiefs ST coordinator Dave Toub said (via the Kansas City Star’s Herbie Teope, on Twitter) he rated rookie UDFA punter Tommy Townsend as this draft class’ best punter. Twice a semifinalist for the Ray Guy award, Townsend punted at Florida after transferring from Tennessee. The Chiefs signed both Townsend and 2019 UDFA Tyler Newsome this offseason. Toub’s glowing assessment of Townsend almost certainly gives him a leg up in this competition.

Here is the latest from the West divisions:

  • Bruce Irvin had his eye on a Seahawks reunion for a while. The former Seattle first-round pick texted Bobby Wagner during the playoffs he wanted to come back (via the Seattle Times’ Bob Condotta, on Twitter). Irvin also confirmed he will be playing linebacker in Seattle’s base defense while shifting to an edge-rushing role on passing downs, Condotta adds (via Twitter). This was the expected arrangement. The Seahawks used their base defense considerably last season but have not re-signed Mychal Kendricks. Irvin functioned in this versatile capacity during most of his first Seahawks stint.
  • Prince Amukamara will take a considerable pay cut to join the Raiders. The veteran cornerback signed a one-year, $1.05MM deal, per Field Yates of ESPN.com (on Twitter). Amukamara will qualify for the new minimum salary benefit, counting only $888K against the Raiders’ cap. The Bears re-signed Amukamara in 2018, and he was set to make $9MM in base salary on that contract this season.
  • Frank Clark played a role in bringing Taco Charlton to Kansas City, per Tom Pelissero of NFL.com (on Twitter). Charlton’s ex-teammate and roommate while at Michigan, Clark lobbied Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo in an effort to bring the former first-round pick to Kansas City. The Chiefs did not claim Charlton’s rookie contract but did add him at a cheaper rate. Charlton called his departure from Dallas and Miami “mutual,” according to Pelissero (via Twitter). Both teams waived the 2017 first-rounder, the Dolphins doing so despite Charlton leading the team in sacks last season with five. Charlton figures to fill a rotational role vacated by the exits of Emmanuel Ogbah and Terrell Suggs.
  • Despite Bashaud Breeland being arrested on several charges earlier this offseason, he has been part of the Chiefs’ virtual offseason since it began, Spagnuolo said (via NFL.com’s James Palmer, on Twitter). Re-signed on a one-year deal, Breeland will likely face a suspension for his arrest — which included the charge of resisting arrest.

Chiefs cornerback Bashaud Breeland was arrested on Tuesday in South Carolina, as Joshua Needelman of the Post and Courier reports. Breeland’s charges include: resisting arrest, possession of an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, marijuana possession, and driving without a license. Meanwhile, Breeland maintains his innocence and his attorneys say the police used excessive force during the arrest (via Twitter).

Breeland recently re-upped with the Chiefs on a one-year, $4.5MM deal, returning him to the defending champs. He’s still only 28, so it’s an excellent platform opportunity for the cornerback if he can build off of last year’s momentum. In 2019, Breeland notched 48 stops, eight passes defended, and a pair of interceptions in the 2019 regular season. He also came away with an interception in KC’s Super Bowl victory to cap his year in style.

Even before the arrest, Breeland was facing a four-game suspension for a separate substance abuse violation, as Tom Pelissero of NFL.com tweets. Breeland is currently in the process of appealing that ban.

Then, he waited until late September until he finally found a home with the Packers. In other Chiefs news, the team recently restructured Laurent Duvernay-Tardif‘s deal to carve out additional cap room. The guard’s cooperation was sorely needed – the Chiefs had precious little cap room heading into the draft, even after revising Sammy Watkins‘ contract for the 2020 season.

The Chiefs have agreed to re-sign Bashaud Breeland, according to ESPN.com’s Rob Demovsky (on Twitter). Breeland will return on a one-year deal worth $4.5MM as he looked to build off of last year’s momentum. 

Breeland suited up for every game for the Super Bowl champs last year, capping his season with a ring and an interception on the game’s grandest stage. It was a big turnaround for Breeland, who had a bizarre 2018. After inking a three-year, $24MM contract ($11MM guaranteed) with the Panthers, his contract was voided due to an infected foot. Then, the veteran corner had to wait until late September until he finally found a home with the Packers. Unfortunately, he was held back by a hamstring injury and was unable to really showcase himself.

All along, Breeland has said that he wanted to return to KC. He got his wish, though he had to wait until the second/third wave of free agency before securing his deal. The ongoing pandemic surely played a role in his prolonged free agency as well.

Although it’s a decent payday for Breeland, the deal is a clear win for the Chiefs, who have managed to keep another difference-maker on the roster while crossing a major item off of the to-do list ahead of the draft. After watching Kendall Fuller leave for the Redskins, the Chiefs are glad to move forward with at least one of their free agent CBs in the mix. Morris Claiborne, who appeared in eight regular season games for KC last year, remains unsigned.

CB Bashaud Breeland Wants To Stay With Chiefs

Cornerback Bashaud Breeland is showing his hand a bit before hitting free agency. The veteran told SiriusXM NFL Radio that he’s “looking forward to being a part of the” Chiefs organization next year.

“It’s been a great journey for me, man. You know what I mean? I’m just enjoying the journey, you know what I mean? And when free agency hits, it hits,” Breeland said (via Josh Alper of ProFootballTalk.com). “If I’m back in Kansas City, I’m going to life life to the fullest. If I’m not, I’m gonna live it to the fullest. I’ll cross that bridge when I cross it. But at this point in time, I’m looking forward to being a part of the Kansas City Chiefs.”

Chiefs To Sign Bashaud Breeland

Former Packers cornerback Bashaud Breeland is signing with the Chiefs, a source tells ESPN.com’s Rob Demovsky (on Twitter). It’s a one-year, incentive-laden deal that can be worth a max value of $5MM, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (Twitter link). 

Last year, Breeland had a bizarre journey through free agency. He entered March as one of the top cornerbacks available and the Panthers pounced quickly to sign the Redskins free agent to a three-year, $24MM deal. Unfortunately, the Panthers 86’d that deal after they discovered an infection in Breeland’s foot resulting from an off-the-field injury. Towards the end of September, the Packers inked Breeland to a minimum salary deal.

All in all, Breeland was on the field for just seven games (five starts), but he definitely made his presence known. Breeland had two picks and a fumble recovery in his short GB run.

Breeland should provide the Chiefs with additional firepower in the secondary after the release of Eric Berry. As it stands, Breeland projects to step into the starting lineup to replace Steven Nelson, who signed with the Steelers in free agency.

The Chiefs flirted with Breeland last season before he joined up with the Packers and they got their man less than a year later. He also has an old friend in Kendall Fuller, his ex-teammate in Washington.

Extra Points: Packers, Martin, Draft, Raiders

Bashaud Breeland‘s workout parade concluded in Green Bay, but his Packers contract is nearly its expiration. The veteran cornerback would re-enter the market in a better position, doing so a year after a golf cart-related injury harpooned his value. But Breeland, who said many teams would not medically clear him after his foot injury, would be interested if the Packers approached him about staying before he hit the market. Although, he said the Packers have not discussed an extension with him yet.

“If I have the opportunity, I would,” Breeland said, via Ryan Wood of Packersnews.com, of a possible extension or offseason Packers re-signing. “At this point in time, the Green Bay Packers have first dibs because I’m here. They can make it happen at any moment.”

The Packers are not known as extravagant spenders but are keen on locking up their own talent. Breeland has only played in four Packers games, but on Sunday, the former Redskins starter recovered a fumble and returned an interception for a score. Both Tramon Williams and Davon House‘s contacts expire at season’s end as well, but the Packers still have recent high draft picks Jaire Alexander, Josh Jackson and Kevin King locked up long-term. Next year’s cornerback market may include the likes of Darqueze Dennard, Ronald Darby, Bradley Roby and Bryce Callahan while also housing veterans Morris Claiborne, Kareem Jackson and Brent Grimes.

  • Zack Martin re-aggravated his MCL sprain during the fourth quarter of the Cowboys‘ overtime win over the Eagles on Sunday, and Todd Archer of ESPN.com notes the All-Pro guard will likely be limited in practice this week. Martin has never missed a start in his five-year career, but MCL sprains are often multi-week injuries. The possibility Martin misses multiple games in order to right himself for an expected playoff game is on the table, Albert Breer of SI.com notes. If Martin does sit against the Colts, Connor Williams would start at right guard, per Archer.
  • So far, the prevailing word surrounding possible top-five pick Justin Herbert is another year in Eugene, Ore. But longtime evaluator Gil Brandt, now with NFL.com, tweets he would make substantial bet that the Oregon quarterback declares for the 2019 draft and becomes a top-five selection. Teams like the Giants, Jaguars and Buccaneers would likely be interested if Herbert left early.
  • Texas Tech wide receiver Antoine Wesley will depart school early. Responsible for 1,410 yards this season — third-most in Red Raiders history behind Michael Crabtree and Keke Coutee — Wesley announced Monday (on Twitter) he will leave Lubbock and head to the NFL.
  • Scot McCloughan could be a name to watch in the Raiders‘ GM or de facto GM search, Vic Tafur of The Athletic writes (subscription required). The former Redskins and 49ers GM interviewed with the Raiders for a position under Reggie McKenzie after the 2014 season, but Tafur notes McCloughan wanted personnel control. He then took Washington’s GM job before an ugly divorce. Jon Gruden and McCloughan’s tenures in Green Bay briefly overlapped in the mid-1990s, and Tafur notes McCloughan got along well with Jay Gruden in Washington.
  • The Broncos worked out 15 players on Monday. Defensive linemen Winston Craig, Jon Cunningham, Marcus Hardison and Christian Lacouture took part in the group audition, per Mike Klis of 9News (Twitter link). Defensive backs Jude Adjei-Barimah, Sojourn Shelton and Henre’ Toliver joined linebacker Greer Martini in working out in Denver, per Klis.

Injury Notes: Gronk, Mack, Pack, Eagles

A third Rob Gronkowski injury absence appears to be in the cards. The Patriots will not deploy their All-Pro tight end to play Sunday against the Titans, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets. While Gronkowski is traveling with the team to Nashville, per ESPN.com’s Mike Reiss (on Twitter), he’s expected to be held out. Gronk missed games against the Bears and Packers but played in Buffalo on the Monday night in between those tilts. He’s been dealing with back and ankle trouble. While the Patriots have been able to win without their top pass-catcher, these repeated absences are obviously a concern for the future Hall of Famer’s availability for New England’s stretch run and potentially his post-2018 NFL future. It’s likely the Pats are attempting to rest Gronk now to hopefully see him healthy for key late-season games and the playoffs, but that can’t be considered a lock given his extensive injury history. Gronkowski hitting his incentive targets may now be unrealistic as well.

Here’s the latest from the Week 10 injury front.

  • Better news for the Bears. They’re in line to have both Khalil Mack and Allen Robinson back on Sunday when they face the Lions, per the Associated Press. Mack is no longer on the injury report after missing the past two Chicago games because of an ankle malady. His defensive player of the year chances took a hit because of this hiatus and Aaron Donald continuing another all-world season but Mack figures to still be in the running and can help a team attempting reach the playoffs for the first time in eight years.
  • The Lions‘ Robinson coverage options will be limited. Darius Slay is out for Week 10, joining guard T.J. Lang in that regard. Slay’s played in each of Detroit’s previous eight games and hasn’t missed time since 2016 but is battling a knee injury. A neck ailment will sideline Lang, who also missed time because of a concussion this season.
  • A tough injury night against the Patriots will have after-effects for the Packers. Kevin King will not play Sunday against the Dolphins because of a hamstring injury. Bashaud Breeland, whom ESPN.com’s Rob Demovsky notes appeared to impress the Packers in his Green Bay debut, figures to see more time.
  • Both Sidney Jones and Jalen Mills are going to miss Sunday night’s Eagles-Cowboys game, but Corey Graham will return after missing four games, per Sirius XM Radio’s Adam Caplan (on Twitter). After claiming Cre’Von LeBlanc off waivers earlier this week, surely due to injuries affecting the aforementioned duo, the Eagles have seven corners on their roster.
  • Taco Charlton and Connor Williams aren’t playing for the Cowboys on Sunday. Xavier Su’a-Filo appears to be the choice to replace Williams at left guard for Dallas, per executive VP Stephen Jones (Twitter link). A full-time Texans starter the past two seasons, Su’a-Filo has not played this season. Williams is down with a knee injury.
