NFC WR Notes: Isabella, Turpin, Doubs, Turner

Andy Isabella came to the Cardinals in 2019 with plenty of expectations. The 2019 second-rounder has yet to live up to his potential, though, which has led to his name being involved in plenty of trade speculation.

Arizona was shopping the 25-year-old speedster in the run-up to free agency, after his first three seasons in the league resulted in just 31 catches and three touchdowns. Given that they granted Isabella permission to seek a new destination, it seemed inevitable that a swap could be coming, but nothing materialized.

Immediately after the draft – during which the Cardinals acquired Marquise Brown – the UMass alum was again available to outside teams. However, Isabella has impressed the team during training camp and preseason, and he appears to have increased his chances of finishing his rookie contract in the desert. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler tweets that he has “had as good a camp as just about anyone,” which should strengthen his grip on a roster spot. Aside from Brown, the Cardinals also have DeAndre Hopkins, Rondale Moore and A.J. Green ahead of Isabella on the depth chart, but he could be in line for a career-year in 2022.

  • The Cowboys took a flier on the USFL’s leading receiver, KaVontae Turpin, late last month. After the TCU alum enjoyed a two-touchdown preseason contest against the Chargers in the return game, HC Mike McCarthy was asked about whether or not Turpin would handle the team’s kick return duties come Week 1. “I think there is a great chance he will be returning kicks against Tampa Bay,” he responded (Twitter link via Clarence Hill Jr. of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram) – a rather ringing endorsement of the five-foot-nine, 153-pounder looking to turn his spring success into a full-time NFL role.
  • Aaron Rodgers was publicly critical of the young receivers the Packers are incorporating into their offense last week, but one of them has established a noteworthy rapport with the reigning MVP. Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer notes that Romeo Doubs has “really” earned Rodgers’ trust this summer, something which could pay dividends for Green Bay’s offense. The Nevada product put up back-to-back 1,000-yard campaigns to finish his college career, and has seen first-team reps in training camp. He could be in line for a productive rookie season in a WR corps featuring plenty of unknowns.
  • 49ers wideout Malik Turner received a fine of $5,750 for unsportsmanlike conduct during the team’s preseason win over the Vikings, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero tweets. The 26-year-old split his first four seasons evenly between the Seahawks and Cowboys, playing primarily on special teams. He is likely to have a similar role in San Francisco, though the league’s discipline won’t help his impressions with the team in the build-up to the season.

Cardinals Continue To Shop WR Andy Isabella

After acquiring Marquise Brown the other day, the Cardinals are now looking to chop some fat from their WR depth chart. Per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo (on Twitter), the Cardinals are open to trading receiver Andy Isabella.

According to Garafolo, the organization has shopped Isabella “to a few teams” in the past few weeks, and the reporter implies that a deal could finally be completed during the final day of the draft.

After selecting Kyler Murray with the first-overall pick in the 2019 draft, the Cardinals later used pick No. 62 to select Isabella, and the organization was hoping the duo would be their long-term answer on offense. However, the receiver hasn’t been able to carve out a role in Arizona. He barely played on offense during his rookie season, and he only took a minor step forward in 2020, finishing with 21 receptions for 224 yards and two touchdowns.

Isabella was buried on the depth chart in 2021. He only saw time in eight games, collecting a single reception. We heard earlier this offseason that the wideout was on the trade block, and the recent acquisition of Brown likely spelled the end of Isabella’s tenure in Arizona. Merely cutting the player would save the Cardinals $1.1MM.

Cardinals Shopping WR Andy Isabella

Despite being a second-round pick, Andy Isabella has been unable to carve out a consistent role with the Cardinals. The team has given the ex-Division I-FCS standout permission to seek a trade, Josina Anderson of USA Today tweets.

Isabella’s agent plans to reach out to teams in mid-March about finding his client a new home. The UMass product is going into his contract year but has not found his footing as a pro yet, which will limit the Cardinals’ return in the event a trade suitor surfaces. Merely cutting Isabella would save the Cardinals $1.1MM.

The Cards drafted Isabella 62nd overall in 2019, but he has only caught 31 passes for 426 yards in three seasons. Drafted to work in Kliff Kingsbury‘s Air Raid attack, the 5-foot-9 pass catcher joins fellow 2019 Arizona receiver picks Hakeem Butler (Round 4) and KeeSean Johnson (Round 6) in not working out with the Cardinals.

Arizona is shopping Isabella during an offseason in which a receiver need has again surfaced. The Cards’ Nos. 2 and 3 wideouts — Christian Kirk and A.J. Green — are on track for free agency. While the team figures to lean on 5-foot-7 Rondale Moore in a more prominent supporting role next season, more DeAndre Hopkins sidekicks will be needed.

Cardinals Sign Five Draft Picks, Wrap Up Draft Class

After signing Kyler Murray and a handful of others yesterday, the Cardinals wrapped up the rest of their picks today. Arizona announced the following signings:

With that, every 2019 Cardinals draft pick is officially under contract. In Isabella and Butler, the Cards got two new weapons for Murray. Isabella is a speed-demon who played at a small school, but put up monster numbers. Undersized but blazing fast, Isabella racked up 102 receptions for 1,698 yards and 13 touchdowns last season for the Minutemen.

Many people thought Butler would end up going earlier than he did, and a lot of mock drafts had him going sometime in the second round. He slipped to the fourth, where Arizona got him with the 103rd pick. Butler was also very productive in college, putting up 1,318 yards and nine touchdowns in his junior season at Iowa State before declaring for the draft.

Thompson is another player who had a notable tumble on draft day. For a while the Alabama product was considered one of the top safeties in the class, and a bunch of analysts thought he would go sometime on Day 2. He’ll now have a big chip on his shoulder, as he lasted all the way to the 139th pick.

Cardinals To Trade Josh Rosen To Dolphins

Josh Rosen is headed out of Arizona after one season. The Dolphins will be the team that pulls the trigger on the former top-10 pick, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com reports (on Twitter).

It turns out, the Dolphins’ recent trade-down maneuver proved key. The Dolphins will trade their recently acquired No. 62 overall pick to the Cardinals, Schefter added. The teams had discussed the former UCLA quarterback most of the day, with the Cardinals having initially asked for the Dolphins’ first-round pick. Miami then balked at its No. 48 overall choice, but now the teams have agreed. And Rosen and Kyler Murray will not be teammates.

With the pick, the Cardinals selected wideout Andy Isabella out of UMass. The Cardinals will also receive a 2020 fifth-round pick, Field Yates of ESPN.com tweets.

While Rosen’s stock has taken a massive hit after a rough rookie season — when he rated across the board as Football Outsiders’ worst full-time quarterback, albeit in a bad situation — the Dolphins landing a 2018 No. 10 overall pick for the 2019 62nd selection could be immense value. As far as traditional stats go, the 6-foot-4 passer finished with 2,278 yards in 13 games, throwing 11 touchdown passes and 14 interceptions as a 21-year-old rookie.

Kliff Kingsbury said multiple times this offseason Rosen was his quarterback, and the 2018 Cards’ starter reported for the team’s offseason workouts. But the long-rumored Murray pick happened, making the Cardinals the first team since the 1982-83 Baltimore Colts to select first-round quarterbacks in back-to-back years. A day later, Rosen is bound for south Florida.

Rosen, though, is going to a roster that may be worse off than his most recent one. The Dolphins have made no secret of the fact they are rebuilding, and many veterans that were part of the 2018 Miami outfit are no longer there. Contract-wise, this also represents value. Rosen is owed less than $7MM through 2021.

The Dolphins signed Ryan Fitzpatrick, and it is possible the veteran remains their Week 1 starter. Rosen could be allowed to further develop behind Fitzpatrick, but it is fairly safe to assume the formerly coveted prospect will see extensive time this season.

The Redskins and Giants represented the other main players for Rosen, but both NFC East teams took quarterbacks on Thursday night. Miami did not, drafting defensive lineman Christian Wilkins instead. The Broncos traded up in front of the Dolphins on Thursday, grabbing Drew Lock. That may have been the final impetus for the Fins to offer a second-round pick for their possible long-term quarterback solution.
