Lions Meet With WR Andre Caldwell

This offseason, the Lions signed Andre Caldwell with the idea that he could serve as a top pass-catching option behind Golden Tate and free agent pickup Marvin Jones. Unfortunately, he broke a bone in his hand in the summer and the Lions wound up cutting him in August. Caldwell is still looking for work today and it’s possible that he could double back to Detroit. The wide receiver visited with the Lions last week, as Justin Rogers of The Detroit News tweets.

It was initially believed that Caldwell’s injury was a season-ender but between his meeting with the Lions and his recent workout with the Saints, it sounds like he might be ready to return to action. Currently, the Lions have four wide receivers on the roster in Jones, Tate, Anquan Boldin, and Andre Roberts. They’re also carrying three WRs on the taxi squad: Jace Billingsley, T.J. Jones, and Jay Lee.

Caldwell, 31, appeared in 14 games for the Broncos last season, catching 10 passes (22 targets) for 72 yards. While he wasn’t one of the primary targets in Denver, he did also have two touchdowns on the year.

Rogers also hears that defensive backs Sergio Brown, Asa Jackson, Jaiquawn Jarrett, Bacarri Rambo, and Major Wright auditioned for the Lions.

Saints Audition Rueben Randle, Others

The Saints auditioned a small army’s worth of players today. Among the notable players to work out for New Orleans were wide receivers Rueben Randle, Greg Little, and Andre Caldwell (Twitter links via Nick Underhill of The Advocate).

Offensive lineman Khalif Barnes, long snapper Aaron Brewer, long snapper Andrew East, long snapper Thomas Gafford, offensive tackle Bryce Harris, tight end Nic Jacobs, tight end Jake Stoneburner, guard/center Mike Liedtke, cornerback Sterling Moore, cornerback Darrin Walls, cornerback B.W. Webb, and wide receiver Nate Washington also auditioned for the Saints. Liedtke’s visit “went well” and “there’s a good chance something may happen soon,” according to agent Brett Tessler (Twitter link).

Randle, 25, joined the Eagles this offseason after averaging 56 receptions, 782 yards, and six touchdowns over the past three seasons with the Giants. However, he was cut loose before the 75-man deadline. Randle is known to be a talented receiver but there were serious questions about his work ethic while he was in East Rutherford.

In the spring he signed on with Detroit and before he was cut by the Lions in August, it was said that he suffered a “season-ending” hand injury. Lions Release Andre Caldwell

The Lions announced that they have released wide receiver Andre Caldwell from injured reserve. Caldwell, signed by Detroit this offseason, suffered a season-ending hand injury last week.

Caldwell, 31, appeared in 14 games for the Broncos last season, catching 10 passes (22 targets) for 72 yards. While he wasn’t one of the primary targets in Denver, he did also have two touchdowns on the year. Before joining the Broncos in 2012, Caldwell enjoyed a more active role on offense with the Bengals. In his three full seasons there – discounting his seven-game rookie season – Caldwell averaged 38 receptions, 365 yards, and two touchdowns per campaign.

In Detroit, Caldwell was initially slated to compete for time in a group headlined by Golden Tate and offseason pickups Marvin Jones and Jeremy Kerley. Since then, however, the Lions added Anquan Boldin and Andre Roberts to the depth chart, meaning that Caldwell’s chances of making the cut weren’t great even if he stayed healthy.

Lions wide receiver Andre Caldwell has been placed on injured reserve with a broken bone in his hand, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets. He’ll discuss an injury settlement with Detroit and should return in 2016, Rapoport adds.

Caldwell, 31, appeared in 14 games for the Broncos last season, catching 10 passes (22 targets) for 72 yards. While he wasn’t one of the primary targets in Denver, he did also have two touchdowns on the year. Before joining the Broncos in 2012, Caldwell enjoyed a more active role on offense with the Bengals. In his three full seasons there – discounting his seven-game rookie season – Caldwell averaged 38 receptions, 365 yards, and two touchdowns per campaign.

In Detroit, Caldwell was initially slated to compete for time in a group headlined by Golden Tate and offseason pickups Marvin Jones and Jeremy Kerley. Since then, however, the Lions added Anquan Boldin and Andre Roberts to the depth chart. With a loaded group at wide receiver, Caldwell was not guaranteed to make the roster even if he was healthy.

THURSDAY, 3:59pm: The Lions have officially signed Caldwell, waiving center Darren Keyton in an additional roster move, per a team release.

WEDNESDAY, 6:20pm: The Lions have signed former Broncos wide receiver Andre Caldwell to a one-year deal, a source tells Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk (on Twitter).

Caldwell, 31, appeared in 14 games last season, catching 10 passes (22 targets) for 72 yards. While he wasn’t one of the primary targets in Denver, he did also have two touchdowns on the year. Before joining the Broncos in 2012, Caldwell enjoyed a more active role on offense with the Bengals. In his three full seasons there – discounting his 7-game rookie season – Caldwell averaged 38 receptions, 365 yards, and two touchdowns per campaign.

In Detroit, Caldwell will compete for time in a group headlined by Golden Tate and offseason pickups Marvin Jones and Jeremy Kerley. Beyond that, the Lions have Corey Fuller, Ryan Spadola, Corey Washington, and Austin Willis on the depth chart. Fuller was retained as an ERFA this offseason while the other three were inked to reserve/futures deals.

Broncos Re-Sign Andre Caldwell

Andre Caldwell has re-signed with the Broncos on a two-year deal, tweets Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. The wide receiver’s deal has a max value of $3.45MM.

Caldwell, 29 in April, saw time in all 16 games last season for Denver. He hauled in 16 catches (30 targets) for 200 yards in Peyton Manning‘s pass-happy offense. While he wasn’t one of the primary targets in Denver, he did manage three scores on the year.
