Cowboys Sign WR Allen Hurns

Free agent receiver Allen Hurns plans to sign with the Cowboys, as he tells Josina Anderson of ESPN.com (Twitter link). It’s a two-year deal worth $12MM, report Adam Schefter of ESPN.com (Twitter link) and Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk (Twitter link).

The Cowboys officially announced the deal Saturday morning (on Twitter).

Dallas has yet to make major additions on either side of the ball, but it clearly wanted to address its receiving corps. While the Cowboys have yet to make a decision on veteran Dez Bryant‘s fate, Jerry Jones & Co. reportedly made a push for Sammy Watkins before he signed with the Chiefs, and also signed a complementary pass-catcher in Deonte Thompson.

Hurns is only 26 years old, but he hasn’t had much success since the 2015 campaign. During that season, Hurns served as the Jaguars’ No. 2 receiver behind Allen Robinson and posted a 64/1,031/10 line. Subsequently, Hurns’ role in the Jacksonville offense was drastically scaled back, while injuries have also limited him. He failed to top 500 yards receiving in either 2016 or 2017.

Hurns will join Bryant, Thompson, Cole Beasley, Terrance Williams, and Ryan Switzer in the Cowboys’ receiving corps. Dallas, cap-strapped as ever, could save $8.5MM by cutting ties with Bryant (and $12.5MM if he’s a post-June 1 release), but Williams is almost certainly stuck on the Cowboys’ roster despite his lack of production. The Cowboys would pay more to cut Williams than release him prior to June 1, and they wouldn’t net any savings even if Williams was a post-June release.

A number of clubs, including the Bears, Bills, Saints, Texans, Jets, Raiders, Panthers, Browns, and Ravens also expressed interest in Hurns, but Hurns only visited Dallas and New York.

Ravens Interested In WR Allen Hurns

The Ravens are among the teams with interest in free agent receiver Allen Hurns, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.com (Twitter link).

Hurns certainly isn’t wanting for a market after being released by the Jaguars earlier this week. He’s already met with both the Cowboys and Jets, while the Browns, Bears, Bills, Saints, Texans, Raiders, and Panthers have all reportedly reached out to Hurns. Dallas hasn’t stopped its pursuit of Hurns even after reaching a deal with Deonte Thompson earlier toady, reports Todd Archer of ESPN.com (Twitter link).

During that season, Hurns served as the Jaguars’ No. 2 receiver behind Allen Robinson and posted a 64/1,031/10 line. Baltimore, meanwhile, has already reached agreements with wideouts Michael Crabtree and John Brown, but the club doesn’t seem to be ending its search for receivers. Since Wednesday, the Ravens have met with restricted free agent pass-catchers Willie Snead and Cameron Meredith, neither of whom would require a sacrifice of draft pick compensation.

Browns Interested In WR Allen Hurns

The Jaguars threw Allen Hurns on the free agent pile this week and it didn’t take long for his market to form. The Browns are among the clubs with interest, according to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, joining seven other previously reported suitors.

Hurns broke out with more than 1,000 yards receiving in 2015 behind Allen Robinson, but hasn’t topped 500 yards in each of the past two seasons. Apparently, teams believe that he can excel once again if he’s healthy and in a different offense. Hurns has missed 13 regular season games over the last two campaigns.

The Browns have expressed some interest in re-signing Terrelle Pryor, but right now he appears ticketed for the Jets or Seahawks. If the Browns add Hurns, he’ll be the team’s No. 3 wide receiver behind Jarvis Landry and Josh Gordon. That’s a trio that would cause nightmare matchups for opposing defenses.

Hurns took his first visit with the Cowboys when the snow kept him from meeting with the Jets. He’ll attempt to meet with Gang Green on Thursday, according to Josina Anderson of ESPN.com (on Twitter).

The Cowboys will meet with free agent wide receiver Allen Hurns, according to Josina Anderson of ESPN.com (Twitter link). Hurns’ visit with Dallas will take place ahead of his summit with the Jets, as weather elements are keeping Hurns out of New York.

Dallas has yet to make major additions on either side of the ball (in fact, the club’s only offseason transaction was re-signing its long snapper), but it clearly wants to address its receiving corps. While the Cowboys have yet to make a decision on veteran Dez Bryant‘s fate, Jerry Jones & Co. reportedly made a push for Sammy Watkins before he signed with the Chiefs, and also expressed interest in complementary pass-catchers such as Deonte Thompson.

Hurns, 26, was excellent as Jacksonville’s No. 2 wide receiver in 2015, putting up 10 touchdowns behind top pass-catcher Allen Robinson. The former undrafted free agent landed a four-year, $40MM deal following that campaign, but Hurns only made it through two years before being released. A number of clubs, including the Bears, Bills, Saints, Texans, Jets, Raiders, and Panthers have also expressed interest in Hurns.

The Cowboys are searching for more weapons for quarterback Dak Prescott after Terrance Williams flopped in the first year of his new four year-deal. With Bryant seemingly on the roster for now, Dallas needs a quality No. 2 receiver. To that end, the Cowboys were also expected to meet with free agents Dontrelle Inman and Justin Hunter, according to Todd Archer of ESPN.com.

Inman, 29, broke out for 58 receptions and 810 yards with the Chargers in 2016, but he tumbled down the team’s depth chart following the return of a healthy Keenan Allen. Los Angeles shipped Inman to the Bears at mid-season for a conditional seventh-round pick, and he went to finish third among Chicago wideouts in receptions (23) and yards (334).

Hunter, meanwhile, wouldn’t qualify as any more than a No. 5 receiver, as he’s managed just 14 total receptions with three different teams over the past two years. Ideally, a back-end wideout such as Hunter would offer special teams value, but the former second-round pick has played only four special teams snaps during his six-year career.

Appearing on Charlotte’s WFNZ following his release from the Jaguars earlier today, free agent wide receiver Allen Hurns said he’s received interest from the Bears, Bills, Saints, Texans, Jets, Raiders, and Panthers, according to Joel Erickson of the Advocate.

A number of those clubs have already added significant help at the wideout position this offseason. Chicago signed both Allen Robinson and Taylor Gabriel, Oakland replaced Michael Crabtree with Jordy Nelson and are now meeting with Eric Decker, and Carolina signed Jarius Wright and acquired Torrey Smith. Other teams, such as Buffalo, New Orleans, and Houston, have done little to address their pass-catching needs.

Allen Hurns To Visit Jets

Allen Hurns is moving fast. After being released by the Jaguars earlier today, Hurns has lined up a Wednesday visit with the Jets, according to Josina Anderson of ESPN.com (Twitter link).

New York seems to be intent on adding a complementary wideout to their offense after not engaging on any of the top free agent pass-catchers during the opening phase of free agency. Over the past week, the Jets have met with both Terrelle Pryor and Charles Johnson, each of whom would supplement a receiving corps that already includes Jermaine Kearse, Robby Anderson, Chad Hansen, ArDarius Stewart, and Quincy Enunwa.

Hurns, 26, was midway through a four-year Jacksonville extension worth roughly $40MM with $20MM in guaranteed money. Those guarantees were paid down over the first two years of the deal, so the Jaguars felt comfortable moving on from the former undrafted free agent even after losing No. 1 receiver Allen Robinson to free agency.

Hurns’ high-water mark came in 2015, when he broke out for 64 receptions, 1,031 yards, and 10 touchdowns. In the two seasons, since, however, Hurns failed to top 500 yards receiving as his role in Jacksonville’s offense was scaled back.

Jaguars Release WR Allen Hurns

The Jaguars are releasing wide receiver Allen Hurns, a source tells Adam Schefter of ESPN.com (on Twitter). The move comes as a surprise since Hurns has been a regularly featured player for Jacksonville over the past four seasons.

Hurns was midway through a four-year extension worth roughly $40MM with $20MM in guaranteed money. Those guarantees were paid down over the first two years of the deal, so the Jaguars will carry no dead money while saving $7MM against the 2018 cap.

Last year, injuries limited Hurns to just ten games. He has missed eleven games since 2016 and that was likely a factor in Jacksonville’s decision to let him go.

Although a great deal of cap room has already been spent around the league, there are still dollars out there for someone like Hurns in the second wave of free agency. The Jets, for example, still have $40MM to work with and continue to scour the free agent market for help at wide receiver.

The Jaguars, who mounted an impressive run to the AFC title game, will return with a revamped group of wide receivers in 2018. Star Allen Robinson, who missed the majority of the 2017 season, left in free agency to sign a lucrative deal with the Bears. Meanwhile, it appears that new pickup Donte Moncrief will serve as the team’s No. 2 WR behind Marqise Lee as he replaces Hurns on the depth chart. New tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins also figures to see a lot of passes thrown in his direction.

Broncos cornerback Aqib Talib wants to finish his career with the Broncos, but he also knows that a return might not be in the cards.

“If I wasn’t [returning], it wouldn’t be the most surprising thing in the world,” Talib said on Denver’s Altitude 950 (transcription via Nicki Jhabvala of The Denver Post). “You have three corners making big money and that’s rare to have. I had conversations with our staff during our exit meetings and stuff, so it’s kind of up in the air. But I wouldn’t be surprised if I’m still here. Just put it like this: I had good conversations with [head coach] Vance [Joseph], with [defensive coordinator] Joe Woods. I mean, things change. But there’s a chance I will be back.”

Talib, 31, has two years left on the five-year deal he signed with the Broncos in 2014. He’s slated to carry a cap hit of $12MM in 2018, but the team can release him and carry just $1MM in dead money. If Talib wants to stay in Denver, he’ll probably have to take a pay cut to make it happen. The Broncos can’t afford to squander any of their cap room, particularly with Bradley Roby’s salary increasing from ~$1MM to $8.5MM next season.

Jaguars wide receiver Marqise Lee did not practice on Wednesday and may not practice this week. However, the belief is that he will be able to take the field against the Bills this weekend, a source tells Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (on Twitter). Lee had the most receptions of any Jags receiver this year (56) and finished second in receiving yards (702). If Lee cannot go, Jacksonville will have to lean a bit more heavily on Allen Hurns, Dede Westbrook, and Keelan Cole.
Meanwhile, Titans running back DeMarco Murray has been ruled out of Saturday’s Wild Card game against the Chiefs (Twitter link via Rapoport). As a result, Derrick Henry will see a larger share of carries.
The Giants‘ interview with Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia is scheduled for Friday, Rapoport tweets.
The Cardinals will have their interview with Patricia on Saturday, Rapoport hears. Patriots linebackers coach Brian Flores is set to interview on the same day.
The Lions will get to talk with Patricia over the weekend, according to Rapoport.

Injury Notes: Winston, Freeman, Fuller, Hurns

We heard yesterday that Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston could miss “an extended period” of time as he recovered from a shoulder injury. However, head coach Dirk Koetter was still adamant that the franchise signal-caller would take the field again this season.

“Again, (the plan we adopted) was for Jameis to rest for two weeks and then we’re going to see where he’s at,” Koetter said (via Roy Cummings of Florida Football Insiders). “We’ve talked to multiple doctors (about it) and that’s what the plan is.

“And I know that Jameis plans on playing again (this year). And there’s been no discussion between Jason and myself of him not playing again so that would all be something that would have to come up in the future.’’

Let’s take a look at some more injury notes from around the NFL…

Falcons running back Devonta Freeman is unlikely to suit up for next Monday’s game against the Seahawks, reports ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter (via Twitter). Freeman suffered his second concussion of the season this past weekend, although Schefter notes that the player isn’t expected to miss multiple games. The 25-year-old has compiled 515 rushing yards and five touchdowns this season.
Cowboys linebacker Sean Lee may be forced to shut it down for several weeks. NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reports (via Twitter) that the defender is unlikely to play this week or during the team’s Thanksgiving contest against the Chargers. Head coach Jason Garrett confirmed that Lee may miss several games, noting that “it might be some time” before he returns (via Charean Williams of ProFootballTalk.com).
Texans wideout Will Fuller suffered a cracked rib during his team’s loss to the Rams this weekend, according to Rapoport (via Twitter). Fortunately, the second-year player didn’t experience extensive damage and may only miss a single game. The 23-year-old has been a touchdown machine this season, hauling in seven scores.
We learned last week that Bengals running back Jeremy Hill‘s season was over, and it sounds like it was the player’s decision to be placed on the injured reserve. Head coach Marvin Lewis said it was Hill who ultimately opted for the ankle surgery, which resulted in him landing on the injured reserve (via Rapoport on Twitter). The former second-rounder has compiled only 116 rushing yards on 37 carries this season, a far cry from his 1,124-yard performance in 2014.
Jaguars wideout Allen Hurns suffered a right ankle injury against the Chargers on Sunday, and coach Doug Marrone doesn’t see him taking the field this weekend. “Yeah, I don’t anticipate him playing this week,’’ Marrone said (via Cummings). “I would say yes (in terms of him missing this week), but I wouldn’t know (about his availability) after that.’’ As Cummings points out, Hurns absence could force the team to finally play wideout Dede Westbrook, who is eligible to be activated off of the injured reserve.

AFC Notes: Jackson, Kizer, Claiborne, Hurns

It seemed for a few moments on Sunday that the Browns may in fact snap their eight-game losing streak, but it was not to be. One of the key turning points of the game came when the Browns ran a quarterback sneak deep in Lions territory with just seconds left and no time outs. QB DeShone Kizer was stuffed at the line and the clock ran out before Cleveland could get any points on the board. While it looks like the play may have been an audible from the rookie second round pick, head coach Hue Jackson told Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com and the rest of the media that the mistake fell squarely on him.

“Doesn’t matter (if he audibled),” said Jackson. “It’s on me. To go ’round and ’round about it, I’m not going to do that. Anything that happens with our offensive football team is my responsibility, so that’s on me.”

The second-year Browns head coach didn’t budge when describing what went wrong at the end of the half, continuing to put on the focus on him being the decision maker of the offense when his football team has the ball.

“It’s on me,” Jackson continued. “I’m mad at myself. Nobody else. period. I’m taking the fall on everything. We’re an 0-9 football team right now.”

Despite the negativity surrounding the now only winless team in the NFL, Kay Cabot did also pass along in another article that Jackson felt his young quarterback played his best game of his young professional career. Kizer himself also focused on how he’s improving as the year has gone on. “Yeah, every game so far I’ve felt pretty confident that I was getting better,” Kizer said. “I was able to play the whole game, wasn’t benched, wasn’t in a situation in which I was turning the ball over earlier in the game. Got a little rhythm going, so yeah, I think this was my best outing yet.” It’s encouraging to see Kizer put a solid game together, especially given the circumstances surrounding the franchise. He’ll likely have the keys to starting QB job for the rest of the season, so if the rookie can continue to build off his solid performance today, it may make the team think twice about whether they want to bring another young signal caller into the building next season.
Jets cornerback Morris Claiborne left today’s game vs. Tampa Bay in the first quarter because he aggravated a previous foot injury, according to Rich Cimini of ESPN.com. The former sixth overall pick told Cimini that he wasn’t 100% going into the contest, but wanted to try and tough out the injury. “Wanted to give it a shot to see where it was, to see if I️ could make it through the game. But I also didn’t want to go out and put bad film out there and get beat where you lose the game.” We’ll just have to see how whether the Jets hold out their 27 year-old defensive back in practice this coming week. The team has the likes of Rashard Robinson and Darryl Roberts ready to go if this turns out to be a multi-week issue, the former was brought to the Jets in a trade from San Francisco last month.
The Jaguars could lose another wide receiver after Allen Hurns went down with a knee injury during today’s comeback win over the Chargers. The wideout was injured on his 26th birthday when he was hit directly on his knee and was forced to leave the game. The former starting receiver was seen on crunches in the locker room, unable to put any weight on his right leg and is set to undergo an MRI on Monday, according to Michael DiRocco of ESPN.com.
