Dolphins To Host Allen Hurns

Wide receiver Allen Hurns is healthy and will visit the Dolphins on Thursday, a source tells ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter (on Twitter). The Cowboys are still interested in bringing him back as well, Schefter hears. 

The Cowboys released Hurns earlier this week when he declined to accept a pay cut. Presumably, the Cowboys would only be interested in bringing him back on a cheaper deal with little or no guarantees.

The Dolphins, meanwhile, could use some depth to support their top quartet of DeVante Parker, Kenny Stills, Albert Wilson, and Jakeem Grant. Hurns, who once caught 64 passes for 1,031 yards and ten touchdowns for another Florida team, could represent a low-risk, high-upside addition for the Fins.

Cowboys Release WR Allen Hurns

The Cowboys are cutting wide receiver Allen Hurns, a source tells ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter (on Twitter). The Cowboys were reportedly asking Hurns to take a pay cut this offseason and his release could be related to that matter. 

Hurns signed a two-year, $12MM deal with Dallas last offseason, and was slated to have a cap hit of $6.25MM this year. Given his level of production last season, it’s not surprising that the Cowboys wanted to reduce that number or remove him from the roster. Still, they exercised the Year Two option in March.

With Dez Bryant gone, Hurns was supposed to compete for one of the Cowboys’ top receiving jobs after Dallas signed him away from Jacksonville. But he never showed much chemistry with Dak Prescott, and he quickly got buried on the depth chart after the emergence of rookie Michael Gallup and the trade for Amari Cooper. Hurns caught 20 passes for 295 yards and two touchdowns during the regular season.

His season ended with a devastating ankle injury suffered in the first round of the playoffs against the Seahawks. The injury was gruesome, but Hurns was said to be recovering well.

Hurns will now look to prove his health elsewhere and look to regain the form he exhibited in Jacksonville.

Trade Rumors: Cardinals, Armstead, Haskins

The Seahawks and Chiefs agreed to a blockbuster trade earlier today that will send Frank Clark to Kansas City. And as Albert Breer of SI.com writes, the veteran trade market is expected to remain hot this week. Breer says that rival clubs are “keeping an eye” on Cardinals‘ DL Robert Nkemdiche, and given that Nkemdiche suffered a torn ACL in December, it’s possible that he could be had for minimal compensation. He has battled injuries throughout his career and has not really lived up to his potential when on the field, but as a former first-round pick who won’t turn 25 until the regular season starts, it makes sense that he would draw some interest. He did post 4.5 sacks in 10 games (six starts) last year.

Now for more trade rumblings from around the league:

  • Assuming the Cardinals draft Kyler Murray with the No. 1 overall pick, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen expects the club to be patient with a Josh Rosen trade (Twitter link). If they cannot get fair value for Rosen prior to the draft, the Cards could wait until after a few signal-callers come off the board and QB-needy teams start to get a little anxious. We heard earlier today that Arizona is still undecided as to what it will do with the first pick in the draft, but if the Cardinals don’t nab Murray, it would be a major surprise.
  • Breer writes that 49ers‘ DE Arik Armstead is also expected to draw some trade interest, though he remains in San Francisco’s plans. Raiders‘ DT Justin Ellis is also said to be available, while Cowboys WR Allen Hurns is the best wideout that could be had via trade [SOURCE LINK].
  • In a separate piece, Breer writes that rival clubs are monitoring Jaguars LB Telvin Smith and Broncos CB Chris Harris Jr. as potential trade targets, though neither player is on the trade block just yet.
  • Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports continues to hear that the Lions and Jets are interested in trading down from their current first-round slots, and he sees the Falcons as a potential partner for Detroit (Twitter link). Interestingly, Breer hears the same [SOURCE LINK]. Clemson DT Christian Wilkins could be the target if Atlanta wants to move up, though Breer says the team has been “nosing around” offensive linemen as well as defensive linemen.
  • As La Canfora writes in a separate piece, the Redskins could be the Jets‘ trade partner if Washington feels it needs to trade up to land Ohio State QB Dwayne Haskins. One way or another, JLC believes the Redskins will come away from the draft with Haskins in tow. This is at least the second time La Canfora has written about a potential deal between Washington and New York.
  • The Chargers are open to trading down from the No. 28 overall pick in Thursday’s draft, per the team’s official website. But given that there is a lot of depth in this draft and not many obvious first-round talents, GM Tom Telesco could find it difficult to execute such a deal.

Cowboys To Ask Allen Hurns To Take Pay Cut

Allen Hurns’ agent Drew Rosenhaus said today that the team hasn’t asked his client to take a pay-cut or restructure his contract yet, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t coming. “It is only a matter of time” and the team does plan to ask him to take a pay cut, a source told Clarence Hill Jr. of The Forth Worth Star-Telegram (Twitter link.)

Cowboys To Pick Up Allen Hurns’ Option

The Cowboys will exercise the 2019 option on Allen Hurns‘ contract on Friday, a source tells Josina Anderson of ESPN.com (on Twitter). Per the terms of his deal, Hurns can make up to $6MM and will earn a base salary of $4MM. Word of Hurns’ option being exercised was first passed along by Mike Fisher of 24/7 Sports (on Twitter). 

Hurns signed a two-year, $12MM deal with the Cowboys last March, but was unable to establish himself in Dallas’ offense. He initially looked like he might be the team’s number one receiver after Dez Bryant was cut, but ended up catching just 20 passes for 295 yards and two touchdowns in the regular season. Then, Hurns suffered a dislocated ankle just minutes into the Cowboys’ wild card playoff game against the Seahawks. Unfortunately, it was one of those ugly injuries that non-doctors could immediately diagnose as a season-ender.

Fortunately, Hurns has resumed working out at the Cowboys’ facility, so he should be on track to play in 2019. If he’s able to get back to his old form, the Cowboys could have a very potent passing attack between him and WR1 Amari Cooper.

It’s officially official. On Tuesday, the Cowboys placed wide receiver Allen Hurns on injured reserve. As previously reported, the Cowboys will promote fellow receiver Lance Lenoir from the practice squad to take his place. 

Hurns suffered a dislocated ankle just minutes into the Cowboys’ wild card playoff game against the Seahawks. Unfortunately, it was one of those injuries that non-doctors could immediately diagnose as a season-ender. Now, the Cowboys will head into Saturday’s game without him.

Hurns signed a two-year, $12MM deal this past March, but was never able to establish himself in Dallas’ offense. He initially looked like he might be the team’s number one receiver after Dez Bryant was cut, but ended up catching just 20 passes for 295 yards and two touchdowns in the regular season.

The Cowboys still have him under contract for 2019, so he may have an opportunity for redemption next year. There’s also reason to believe that he can do better based on his past results. In 2015, he enjoyed a breakout season with the Jags as he caught 64 passes for 1,031 yards and ten touchdowns. And, if fellow receiver Cole Beasley leaves in free agency, Hurns could see more opportunities as a depth option behind Amari Cooper.

Cowboys WR Lance Lenoir Could Be Promoted

With wideout Allen Hurns expected to land on the injured reserve, the Cowboys could promote a wideout from their practice squad to take his place. Coach Jason Garrett said that practice squad wideout Lance Lenoir is a “viable” option to take a spot on the 53-man roster (via The Athletic’s Calvin Watkins on Twitter).

The 23-year-old Lenoir has appeared in seven games with Dallas this season, appearing mostly on special teams. The 2017 undrafted free agent out of Western Illinois previously impressed during his collegiate career, earning a pair of All-Missouri Valley Football Conference nods. Dallas clearly likes his potential, as he’s split time between the practice squad and active roster over the past two years. The wideout has displayed his talent during the past two preseasons, including a 2018 stretch that saw him haul in 12 receptions for 91 yards and one touchdown.

Of course, even with Hurns out of the lineup, it’s unlikely that Lenoir will see many (if any) reps at wide receiver during next week’s playoff matchup against the Rams. Amari Cooper, Michael Gallup, and Cole Beasley will continue to see the majority of the targets at wide receiver, with Noah Brown and Tavon Austin potentially earning more reps.

Hurns suffered a dislocated ankle during the Cowboys win over the Seahawks last night. The 27-year-old has already undergone surgery and is expected to be ready in August.

Cowboys WR Allen Hurns Dislocates Ankle, Expected To Make Full Recovery

Sunday, 9:53am: Hurns suffered a dislocated ankle, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, who adds that Hurns has already had surgery on the ankle (Twitter link). It was a horrible injury to watch, but Schefter says that Hurns should be ready to return to football in August if there are no complications.

Saturday, 7:52pm: Just minutes into the Cowboys’ wild card playoff game, receiver Allen Hurns went down with a devastating injury, and had to be carted off. 

It’s unclear what the exact injury is at this point, but something in Hurns’ leg clearly broke as his leg was bent back at a terrible angle. Hurns’ season is definitely done no matter how deep of a playoff run Dallas ends up making. It’s particularly bad news for the Cowboys’ passing game, as fellow receiver Cole Beasley also aggravated a lower leg injury in the first quarter.

It’s terrible news for Hurns, as the offseason acquisition was already having a rough year. Signed to a two-year $12MM deal this past March, Hurns was never able to establish himself in the offense. Many expect Beasley to depart in free agency this offseason, so Hurns should be back with the team next year in a depth role behind Amari Cooper.

Jets Submitted Offer To Allen Hurns

In signing Terrelle Pryor and Andre Roberts, the Jets added multiple free agent pieces at wide receiver this offseason. But they navigated through the negotiation process with Allen Hurns as well.

One of several teams to be interested in Hurns after his Jaguars release, the Jets saw weather intervene and delay the veteran wideout’s March visit. But the Jets made Hurns an offer and indeed followed through with the rescheduled meeting. It just couldn’t steer Hurns away from Dallas and a two-year, $12MM deal.

“(The Jets) already had an offer for me, and I didn’t have an offer when I came (to Dallas),” Hurns said, via Kate Hairopoulos of the Dallas Morning News. “Once I came … I was in love. So I told my agent if it was less to come here, that I’d be willing to take it.”

Booked the same day the Jags cut him, the Jets visit was first on Hurns’ itinerary. By the time Hurns did get around to making his trip to the Big Apple, the Jets had already agreed to terms with Pryor. It’s unclear what Gang Green’s offer was, but the Jets possessed plenty of cap space. And at that time, Robby Anderson‘s legal outlook was cloudier than it is now.

Hurns posted a 1,000-yard season in 2015 but delivered significantly lesser production over the past two seasons, leading to the Jacksonville release. The Cowboys plan to deploy Hurns in the slot and on the outside, per Hairopoulos, and he’ll be a key component of a passing game that lost Dez Bryant and Jason Witten this offseason.
