Patriots To Meet With Allen Bailey

The Patriots are set to meet with defensive end Allen Bailey on Thursday, according to Mike Florio of PFT. Bailey, a 2011 third-round pick, has spent his entire career with the Chiefs.

Bailey cracked the starting lineup in 2014 and has started in virtually all of his games over the last five years. Last year, he registered six sacks, 38 tackles, and two forced fumbles across 16 games. The advanced metrics weren’t high on Bailey (No. 91 ranked interior defender out of 112 players), but the sacks and game film show that he is an effective lineman.

Bailey’s season ended in the AFC title game when the Patriots topped the Chiefs. After he couldn’t beat ’em, he just might join ’em.

The Patriots’ defensive line has been overhauled significantly in the past week. Standout Trey Flowers agreed to a colossal deal with the Lions, though they’ve added defensive end Michael Bennett and re-signed linebacker John Simon.

Chiefs Make Several Roster Moves

The Chiefs have made a series of roster moves in advance of their game against the Saints this Sunday, Terez A. Paylor of the Kansas City Star reports. The club has signed four players – defensive linemen Kendall Reyes and Rakeem Nunez-Roches, linebacker Ramik Wilson and cornerback Terrance Mitchell – to its active roster. Additionally, the Chiefs have waived defensive lineman Nick Williams, and placed both defensive end Allen Bailey and linebacker Justin March-Lillard on injured reserve (links to Twitter).

Of the four newest Chiefs, Reyes is the most notable. A second-round pick in 2012, Reyes was a starter on San Diego’s defensive line from 2013-2015. Reyes then joined the Redskins on a one-year, $2.5MM deal during the offseason. He cracked their roster to begin the year, but the team cut him earlier this month after a groin injury limited him. In total, the 27-year-old has racked up 66 appearances, 50 starts and 13.5 sacks in his NFL career.

Both Wilson and Nunez-Roches were member of the Chiefs’ 2015 draft class who are now returning to their roster (the former had been on their practice squad). Kansas City selected Wilson in the fourth round, and the ex-Georgia Bulldog appeared in 11 games, made two starts and amassed 13 tackles in his rookie year.

Nunez-Roches, formerly of Southern Miss, went in Round 6. He saw action in seven games last year and remained with the Chiefs at the outset of this season, but they cut him after Week 1. Notably, Nunez-Roches is the first Belizean-born player in league history.

Mitchell landed with the Cowboys in the seventh round of the 2014 draft and will now join his fifth organization. He debuted last season and garnered eight appearances with the Cowboys and Bears, also adding an interception.

Williams, 26, went to Pittsburgh in the seventh round of the 2013 draft, but he didn’t suit up until the next season as a member of the Chiefs. He picked up 21 appearances with KC before the club cut him.

Not to be lost in the shuffle are the long-term injuries to Bailey and March-Lillard, both of whom started the Chiefs’ first five games of the season.

Bailey, a sixth-year man, has started in all 31 of his appearances dating back to 2014. He was on the field for 54.9 percent of the Chiefs’ defensive snaps before going on IR with a shoulder injury, but Pro Football Focus ranks his overall performance just 93rd among 117 qualifying interior D-linemen through five weeks.

Having played in 49.9 of their defensive snaps, the Chiefs have also relied a fair amount on March-Lillard. In his first pro action, the 2015 undrafted free agent from Akron has accrued 22 tackles. PFF rates his output 49th among 85 LBs.

Chiefs DE Allen Bailey Could Be Done For Year

The Chiefs are worried that defensive end Allen Bailey could be done for the season due to a shoulder injury, tweets freelance NFL reporter Rand Getlin. Bailey missed time during yesterday’s victory over the Raiders, and after the game, Terez A. Paylor of the Kansas City Star reported (via Twitter) that Bailey was dealing with a shoulder contusion.

Bailey, 27, is in the midst of his sixth season with Kansas City, but he’s only been a starter for the past two-plus years. After posting 9.5 sacks from 2014-15, Bailey had started all five games in 2016, but hadn’t posted exemplary results. According to Pro Football Focus, Bailey has graded as just the No. 94 interior defender among 116 qualifiers.

If Bailey is forced to miss an extended period of time, second-rookie Chris Jones would seem to be the next man up. Jones, the 37th overall pick in this year’s draft, has only played on roughly a quarter of Kansas City’s defensive snaps thus far, but that percentage would likely rise if Bailey is sidelined. Fellow lineman Nick Williams and Dadi Nicolas are also options to see more playing time.

Meanwhile, star linebacker Justin Houston was cleared to practice over the weekend, and was officially eligible to come off the physically unable to perform list today. Head coach Andy Reid expressed optimism on Houston’s status, telling reporters, including Paylor (Twitter link), that “we’re close” to Houston’s return to the field.

West Notes: Bailey, Seahawks, Raiders

The season-ending injury to Carson Palmer motivated defensive end Allen Bailey to sign a new deal with the Chiefs rather than wait for free agency, writes Peter King of The MMQB. “That was an eye-opener,” the former third-round pick said. “Anything can happen, on any play. I decided to do it now. Plus, this is a great place for me. I love the family atmosphere we have here. We all buy in, and we all work hard. It’s a great bunch of guys.”
Coach Pete Carroll wouldn’t commit to it, but Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times (via Twitter links) wouldn’t be surprised if the Seahawks sign Lemuel Jeanpierre to fill in for Max Unger at center. Seattle would have to make a roster move to bring Jeanpierre back and if he does return, it wouldn’t be a huge shock to Condotta to see him immediately plugged in at center. As it stands, Patrick Lewis is the only other center on the roster.
Raiders owner Mark Davis told Vincent Bonsignore of the Los Angeles Daily News that L.A. would be a “great option” for his team if a new stadium isn’t going to get built in Oakland, according to CSNBayArea.com. The Raiders have also had flirtations with the city of San Antonio.

Chiefs Extend Allen Bailey Through 2018

3:23pm: The Chiefs have formally announced Bailey’s extension in a press release.

“We are happy that we were able to reach an agreement to keep Allen in Kansas City,” said GM John Dorsey in a statement. “He has developed into a good football player and a key member of our defense.”

2:33pm: The Chiefs have reached an agreement on a contract extension for defensive lineman Allen Bailey, reports Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. According to Florio, it’ll be a four-year deal for Bailey, with a base value of $25MM, and $10MM to sign.

Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports adds (via Twitter) that the extension features $15MM in guaranteed money, though a portion of that guarantee is for injury only. Florio outlines the details, noting that in addition to the $10MM signing bonus, $4MM in injury-only guarantees will become fully guaranteed this winter, shortly after the Super Bowl. The agreement also includes another $1MM in injury-only guarantees.

Bailey, 25, has been installed as a full-time starter on the defensive line for the first time this season. After playing 506 defensive snaps a year ago, Bailey has appeared in 472 so far this season through just nine games, and has certainly held his own. According to Pro Football Focus’ data (subscription required), the former third-round pick has ranked 21st among 50 qualified 3-4 defensive ends, playing particularly well as a pass rusher, having recorded 16 total quarterback pressures.

Having been selected by the Chiefs out of Miami in the 2011 draft, Bailey had been in the final year of his rookie contract, and was eligible for unrestricted free agency after the 2014 season. The extension, which will keep him under team control through 2018, represents a significant pay raise for the fourth-year pro — his ’14 base salary had been the league minimum ($645K), with modest bonuses bumping his overall cap hit to about $809K.

Of course, while locking up Bailey beyond this season is a solid move by the Chiefs to reinforce the team’s defensive front seven, a more significant contract negotiation still looms. Star outside linebacker Justin Houston is also on an expiring deal, and there’s been no indication that he and the Chiefs are close to agreeing on a multiyear pact. If the club enters the offseason without a new contract in place for Houston, the franchise tag looks like a real possibility for the Pro Bowl pass rusher.

AFC Mailbags: Chiefs, Jaguars, Titans

We took a look at ESPN’s NFC mailbags earlier this morning. Let’s check out some notes from the AFC…

Adam Teicher writes that it’s possible for the Chiefs to retain Tamba Hali and Justin Houston longterm, but they have to be clever with their cap manipulation.
Teicher adds that the Chiefs will certainly look to re-sign upcoming free agents Houston, Allen Bailey, Rodney Hudson and Anthony Sherman, but they proved last offseason that they won’t overspend to keep their own players.
Looking forward to free agency, Michael DiRocco says the Jaguars biggest needs are a “pass rusher, speed at linebacker, tight end and more depth along the offensive line.”
It wasn’t that long ago that Vince Young was the Titans starting quarterback, and Paul Kuharsky believes that the team may be wary of a player like Jameis Winston. He later notes that the team needs an edge rusher “more than anything.”
