Lions Audition Aaron Dobson

By the time Aaron Dobson gets done with his workout tour, he might have a practice jersey for all 32 NFL teams. Today, Dobson auditioned for the Lions, according to freelance reporter Rand Getlin (on Twitter). "<strong

Dobson was a second-round pick of the Patriots in 2013 but never broke out as the team hoped he would. Earlier this month, the Pats cut him loose and opted to go with only five wide receivers on the 53-man roster (Actually, if you consider that special teams ace Matthew Slater rarely lines up as a receiver, the Patriots really went with four WRs to start the season).

Dobson’s world tour has seen him audition for the the Jets, Eagles, 49ers, and Chargers in recent days. The Lions currently have Marvin Jones, Golden Tate, Anquan Boldin, and Andre Roberts at wide receiver and they could be keeping Dobson in mind as an option should they lose one of them to injury.

Chargers Work Out Aaron Dobson

Aaron Dobson‘s NFL tour continues. The wide receiver will audition for the Chargers today, according to Michael Gehlken of U-T San Diego (on Twitter). Aaron Dobson (vertical)

For those of you keeping track, Dobson worked out for the Jets last week, tried out for the Eagles on Monday, and auditioned for the 49ers on Tuesday. The Bolts took a look at wide receivers Chris Givens and Griff Whalen yesterday, but Dobson did not participate in that workout due to his Niners scheduling conflict. The Patriots waited for Dobson to break out for three seasons but they decided earlier this month that they could not wait any longer for the former second-round pick to shine.

After losing wide receiver Keenan Allen for the season, the Chargers are scouring the free agent market for options. Of course, they won’t find anyone that can replicate Allen’s production, but they could probably use some additional depth behind receivers Tyrell Williams, Travis Benjamin, Dontrelle Inman, and Isaiah Burse. The Chargers were already looking thin after Stevie Johnson’s injury and Allen’s torn ACL only thinned out that group even further.

49ers Work Out Aaron Dobson

Aaron Dobson has been a busy man since being released by the Patriots in early September. After having worked out for the Jets and Eagles, the 25-year-old’s most recent stop was San Francisco. According to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com, the 49ers brought Dobson in for a workout on Tuesday. The reporter notes that a signing is not believed to be “imminent.”

Aaron Dobson (vertical)The former second-rounder disappointed during his three seasons in New England. The Marshall product showed some flashes during his rookie campaign, compiling 37 receptions for 519 yards and four touchdowns. Since then, Dobson has only hauled in 16 catches for 179 yards in 12 games (over two seasons). The 25-year-old has battled a number of injuries throughout his career, including a hamstring and a high ankle sprain.

The 49ers offense looked good during their season-opening win over the Rams, but the team still lacks depth at receiver. The team waived wideout Chris Harper today, leaving only five receivers on the roster: Torrey Smith, Quinton Patton, Jeremy Kerley, Rod Streater and Aaron Burbridge.

Eagles Work Out Aaron Dobson

Former Patriots wide receiver Aaron Dobson recently worked out for the Eagles, according to a source who spoke with Doug Kyed of NESN (on Twitter). Dobson has been out of work since New England cut him prior to the 53-man deadline.Aaron Dobson (Vertical)

Dobson, 25, is a former second-round pick, but he didn’t do a whole lot during his time with the Pats. In three seasons with the club, the Marshall product totaled just 53 catches for under 700 yards. Making matters worse, the majority of that production came during his rookie season. In the last two seasons, Dobson has tallied only 16 receptions.

The Eagles signed pass-catchers Rueben Randle and Chris Givens during the offseason, but neither made the club’s initial roster despite the fact that they both secured guaranteed money. Jordan Matthews and 2015 first-round pick Nelson Agholor both have solid season debuts against the Browns yesterday, but Philadelphia’s wide receiving corps isn’t all that impressive as a whole. Behind their top two options, the Eagles boast Josh Huff, Dorial Green-Beckham, and Bryce Treggs at wideout.

The Jets worked out Dobson late last week but he left without a deal.

Dobson, McCluster Worked Out For Jets

A pair of free agents – wide receiver Aaron Dobson and running back/returner Dexter McCluster – auditioned for the Jets on Friday, reports Field Yates of ESPN (Twitter links). Both players have been available since the Patriots and Titans, respectively, cut them last weekend.

Dobson, 25, went in the second round of the 2013 draft, but he failed to live up to that selection in New England. In three seasons with the club, the Marshall product posted just 53 receptions and totaled fewer than 700 yards. Most of Dobson’s output came in his rookie season, during which he put up career highs in appearances (12), catches (37), targets (74), yards (519) and touchdowns (four). Dobson then participated in a combined 12 games over the previous two years and saw his production decline significantly.

Aside from starters Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker, the Jets don’t have any established options at wideout, so Dobson could have a chance to make an impact if the club signs him.

With Matt Forte and Bilal Powell, the top of the Jets’ depth chart at running back appears set, which would make it difficult for McCluster to leave his mark on offense. The 28-year-old is fresh off a decent season, though, having registered an impressive 4.5 yards per carry during a 55-attempt, 11-game campaign. McCluster also logged 31 receptions, meaning the 5-foot-9, 165-pounder has finished with no fewer than 21 catches in any of his six NFL seasons. As a special teamer, McCluster took back 24 punts in 2015 and finished 13th in the league in yards per return (9.0).

Patriots Cut Aaron Dobson, Move To 53

The Patriots have announced the cuts that bring them down to 53, including the waiving of Aaron Dobson.

Dobson, 25, is a former second-round pick, but he hasn’t done much since joining New England in 2013. In three seasons with the club, the Marshall product has only posted 53 receptions for less than 700 yards. Most of that production came during his rookie season, as Dobson has put up only 16 catches during the past two years. Entering the final year of his rookie deal, Dobson was set to earn about $872K in base salary.

Patriots Send Aaron Dobson To IR

Prior to probably their offense’s most difficult assignment this season, the Patriots will enter Sunday’s tilt in Denver without another wide receiver.

The Pats placed Aaron Dobson on injured reserve with an ankle injury and brought up safety Dewey McDonald from their practice squad, Field Yates of ESPN.com reports (as relayed by ESPN.com’s Mike Reiss, on Twitter).

Dobson sustained a high ankle sprain on a 17-yard catch during the second quarter of New England’s 20-13 win against Buffalo on Monday night, joining Danny Amendola among Patriots receivers who couldn’t finish their Week 11 game.

Although Dobson, a second-round pick in 2013, hasn’t lived up to expectations, this injury continues a series of setbacks for the Pats’ wide-receiving corps. Julian Edelman‘s out for likely the remainder of the regular season, and Amendola (knee) won’t be at 100 percent if he plays against the Broncos.

Dobson started three games this season and finished with 13 receptions for 141 yards. The Marshall product hasn’t scored a touchdown since finding the end zone four times during his rookie campaign.

The Patriots’ practice squad is devoid of any wideouts. Keshawn Martin was inactive for Monday’s game and remains limited by a hamstring injury, leaving Brandon LaFell and Chris Harper as the team’s healthy receivers.

McDonald worked out for multiple teams, including the Dolphins and Chiefs, before the Patriots signed him to their practice squad less than two weeks ago. The second-year UDFA’s played in 14 games thus far in his career, including two this season with the Colts and Patriots, respectively.

AFC East Notes: Dolphins, Payton, Pats

After losing Julian Edelman for several weeks, the Patriots appear to have dodged a bullet with fellow receiver Danny Amendola. Tom E. Curran of CSNNE.com writes that Amendola has a knee sprain that will limit his ability to practice this week, but he’s not expected to miss much action, and could play in Week 12 vs. the Broncos. The same can’t be said for Aaron Dobson, who is expected to miss that Denver game, and perhaps more than that, so the Pats will be hoping for a quick recovery from Amendola.

Here’s more from around the AFC East:

  • There will be a wide field of worthy candidates for the Dolphins to consider when they search for a permanent head coach this winter, but “none look as attractive or experienced” as Sean Payton, according to Charles Robinson of Yahoo! Sports, who says Dolphins owner Stephen Ross needs to go hard after the Saints’ head coach.
  • Ryan Fitzpatrick is the best option right now for a Jets organization that has been searching for a strong young quarterback for years, Manish Mehta of the Daily News writes. Fitzpatrick might be flawed, but he gives Gang Green the best chance to make the postseason. Geno Smith, he feels, is is a far inferior option.
  • The Patriots opted to keep defensive tackle Chris Jones and linebacker Dane Fletcher on the PUP list rather than activating them, as Rich Garven of The Providence Journal writes. The two veterans both seem to be healthy, but the Pats just couldn’t carve out space for them.
  • The Dolphins worked out defensive backs Dax Swanson, Brandon McGee, Dewey McDonald, and Jeremy Harris, Aaron Wilson of The Houston Chronicle tweets.

Sunday Roundup: Collins, AFC North, Pats

Let’s take a look at a few notes from around the league on this post-draft Sunday:

  • The La’el Collins saga will be one of the more fascinating storylines to watch over the coming days. Gil Brandt of NFL.com tweets that if Collins is cleared of any wrongdoing after his meeting with Louisiana police tomorrow, he will sign as an undrafted free agent. Brandt adds that there will be a great deal of interest in Collins’ services if he is, in fact, cleared.
  • Jason Fitzgerald of OverTheCap.com looks at what Collins could make as an undrafted free agent,
  • It appears that Browns ownership is “digging in” and committing to the Ray FarmerMike Pettine regime, writes Tony Grossi of ESPNCleveland.com.
  • Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer passes along Farmer’s and Pettine’s responses to questions as to why the Browns did not select a quarterback in this year’s draft. The GM and head coach simply reaffirmed their faith in the team’s current signal-callers while acknowledging that the group does not include an elite talent. However, Pettine simply stated, “We’re not going to over-prioritize the quarterback position.”
  • The Ravens have invited Maryland DE Andre Monroe to rookie mini-camp on a tryout basis, writes Aaron Wilson of The Baltimore Sun.
  • Paul Dehner, Jr. of The Cincinnati Enquirer describes how the Bengals passed on the “acrobatic athletes and track stars” in this weekend’s draft and instead focused on powerful linemen and strong tight ends.
  • The Eagles may regret not selecting an offensive lineman in the draft, writes Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer. As we learned earlier today, however, four of the team’s 16 undrafted free agents are offensive linemen.
  • Although they did not address their cornerback need in the draft, Karen Guregian of The Boston Herald believes the Patriots strengthened the secondary simply by adding some punch to the team’s pass rush.
  • The Patriots passed on drafting a receiver for the second consecutive year, meaning that third-year wideout Aaron Dobson will still have a good chance to live up to his considerable potential, writes Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com.
  • With a draft class that most analysts agree is a strong one, and after an active free agency period, Ryan O’Halloran of The Florida Times-Union says the Jaguars are finally adding depth to their roster and creating some much-needed competition.
  • Jeff Duncan of The Times-Picayune says the Saints‘ draft class, which does not include a single wide receiver or tight end, reaffirms their faith in Drew Brees, Sean Payton, and the offense as a whole.
