Jets’ Zach Wilson Addresses Benching

The NFL’s first Black Friday matchup will see the Jets move forward with the 2023 version of their post-Zach Wilson offense. The former No. 2 pick has seen his status as starting quarterback removed for the second consecutive season, with Tim Boyle now set to handle first-team duties.

Wilson was benched in place of Mike White in 2022, as the Jets struggled offensively and the former failed to make the Year 2 jump many young passers experience. He acknowledged that New York’s offense has once again fallen short of expectations in 2023, prompting the team’s decision to drop him to No. 3 on the QB depth chart. Wilson’s remarks on the move indicate he feels he has developed over the course of this season, though.

“It’s a lot different,” the 24-year-old said, via ESPN’s Rich Cimini. “Obviously, I wasn’t doing anything well last year. It was well-deserved. I felt like it was deserved in the locker room. But where I’m at right now, it’s like we’re truly struggling as an offense. It’s hard to point the finger at anybody. I hope we can figure things out and I’ll take that if that’s the issue.”

Wilson added that he felt he has not been “scapegoated” for the issues New York’s offense has been dealing with. The unit ranks near the bottom of the NFL in many categories, and the Jets have scored only nine offensive touchdowns in 10 games this season. Wilson has completed less than 60% of his passes while throwing more interceptions (seven) than touchdowns (six) and losing five fumbles. Those figures have played a large part in New York’s struggles, though other elements – such as an injury-riddled offensive line and play-calling from OC Nathaniel Hackett which has come under scrutiny – have contributed as well.

With Wilson having been demoted for a second straight year, however, it has become increasingly difficult to see him remaining with the Jets no later than the expiration of his rookie contract in 2024. His shortcomings have led to reflections on New York’s decision to draft him in 2021, a move which followed the end of Sam Darnold‘s time at the helm. The latter still had supporters in the organization when the commitment to drafting Wilson was made, SNY’s Connor Hughes notes. Darnold was traded to the Panthers in April 2021, and he signed with the 49ers as a free agent this offseason.

In the wake of benching Wilson, head coach Robert Saleh was unsurprisingly asked about his thoughts on the process of selecting the BYU alum. He responded (via Cimini) simply that he has “shared his thoughts” on the decision with general manager Joe Douglas without going into detail. Saleh has repeatedly given Wilson public votes of confidence, only opening the door to a quarterback swap this past week in the wake of Boyle taking over from Wilson midway through the Jets’ Week 11 loss.

Of course, the organization made its thoughts on Wilson clear by acquiring Aaron Rogers this offseason to supplement a roster believed to be in win-now mode at many positions other than quarterback. With Rodgers under contract for next year, it will be interesting to see how the Jets choose to proceed with Wilson over the coming months in light of his tenure as a New York starter likely having come to an end.

Aaron Rodgers Hoping To Return To Practice Soon, Regardless Of Playoff Contention

Despite defying medical norms and risking the obvious possibility of reinjury, Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers continues to claim his intentions to return by mid-December. According to Rich Cimini of ESPN, the veteran passer hopes “to be trending towards practicing by” his 40th birthday on December 2.

Rodgers made ambitious claims of a mid-December return about two weeks ago before backtracking those comments quite a bit. Not only did Rodgers hesitate to commit to his accelerated timeline for a return, but he also decided to hedge his return bid on whether or not the team was still in playoff contention by the time he was healthy, saying that if the Jets were “not in it in three or four weeks, that could take (his timeline) a different way.”

After a three-game losing streak that has left New York at 4-6, currently good for the 14-seed in the AFC (seven spots outside of a wild-card spot), a playoff bid seems like a long shot. Still, Rodgers pointed out examples of other 4-6 teams in NFL history, namely the 2016 Packers and 2009 Jets, who started out 4-6 before rallying their way to Conference Championship Games, as reasons not to count out the struggling Jets of 2023.

Once again, Rodgers’ stance seems to have changed as Jay Glazer of FOX Sports informed us this morning that Rodgers no longer is concerned about the Jets ability to contend for a playoff spot. Glazer claims that, even if the Jets are out of the playoff race, Rodgers “still wants to show he was able to come back faster from that Achilles tear – faster than pretty much any quarterback ever.” Rodgers is so dead set on this goal that he isn’t even aiming to return to full form. He doesn’t feel the need to be able to escape the pocket and scramble, he just wants to be able to say he was able to come back into a game this season and play some form of the quarterback position.

Rodgers reportedly hopes to rejoin the team this week, though that likely doesn’t mean a return to practice. If the team abides by Rodgers’ wishes to return around his birthday, December 6 becomes the likely date of designation for return, at which point, his 21-day practice window would open. This would allow Rodgers to be activated in time for the Jets’ Christmas Eve matchup with the Commanders, a date that has been mentioned as an unofficial target for return.

That’s a big “if,” though, as head coach Robert Saleh has set the record straight. Saleh claims that Rodgers’ updates and targets are all “a moot point” until the doctors clear him. While he had said days ago that he will not block Rodgers’ route to a return, Saleh clearly has some stipulations that need to be met in order for the quarterback to return to the field. Regardless of how ready Rodgers feels or how far ahead of schedule he claims to be, Saleh is most concerned about the opinions of the team’s doctors, who will need to clear Rodgers in order to open a path for return.

So, according to Rodgers’ own reports, he’s on track to return by mid-December, far ahead of schedule for any previous such cases of recovery. Even if he’s not quite healthy enough to play like the four-time MVP he is, he’ll consider it a win just to return to the field at all. Saleh, though, warns not to weigh Rodgers’ comments too heavily, as the approval from team doctors still reigns as the weightiest opinion in the matter.

Horton, a fourth-round rookie out of TCU, released a statement from the team that he is “dealing with a personal health matter that will keep (him) away from the team for an indefinite period of time.” His spot on the roster will be taken by Hyder, a practice squad end who is one of several former 49ers defenders to join head coach DeMeco Ryans in Houston.

The 49ers have upgraded one of their cornerback roster spots, subbing Womack in off the injured reserve for Jean-Charles. Womack was a much more active participant in his rookie season last year than Jean-Charles has been for the 49ers so far this season. While Womack was ready to return, the same could not be said for rookie fifth-round defensive end Robert Beal Jr. Beal was downgraded to out for tonight’s game and will remain on IR with his 21-day practice window still open for four more days.

Meanwhile, Miami and New York are making their standard gameday elevations for the league’s first ever Black Friday football game tomorrow.

Jets Activate T Duane Brown

Today marked the final day of Duane Brown‘s 21-day practice window after he was designated for return from injured reserve. The Jets have elected to use an IR activation on the veteran offensive tackle.

New York activated Brown from injured reserve on Thursday, per a team announcement. If the team had allowed his three-week practice period to expire, he would have reverted to season-ending IR. Instead, Brown will be eligible to return to a Jets offensive line which has been ravaged by injuries during the year. New York will have six IR activations remaining moving forward.

The 38-year-old started the year as New York’s starting left tackle, the role he held for 12 games last season. Brown entered the year facing questions about not only his age, but also his ability to remain healthy for a full campaign; that question took on added significance with 39-year-old Aaron Rodgers in place as the projected starting quarterback for 2023. Like the latter, though, Brown has run into injury troubles.

A hip injury caused Brown to be placed on IR after only two games at the start of the year. That move guaranteed a four-week absence, but that has stretched deep into November given the length of time he spent on injured reserve after retuning to practice. Brown’s absence has led to shuffling along New York’s offensive front, with Mekhi Becton shifting over to the blindside. The former first-rounder suffered an injury of his own in Week 11, though, leaving his availability for tomorrow’s contest in doubt.

Brown’s return would thus be a welcomed development for a Jets O-line which will be without right guard Alijah Vera-Tucker for the rest of the season due to an Achilles tear. Xavier Newman-Johnson has been signed to the active roster, a sign that he will get the start at RG tomorrow. Meanwhile, Chris Glaser – who got the nod in Week 11 – has been waived. While the team’s upcoming Black Friday matchup will feature yet another new combination up front for the Jets, Brown will be a familiar option on the blindside.

Smith’s tenure on the Raiders lasted about three weeks after he was signed off of the Saints’ practice squad. The Raiders immediately plugged him in hoping that he would improve a unit struggling to defend the run. After his initial game in Vegas, though, Smith was inactive for the next two games. Whether due to injuries or ineffectiveness, Smith no longer warranted a roster spot with the Raiders.

The Jets signed Kelly in the midst of a litany of offensive line injuries. Kelly is an established veteran with a good amount of starting experience, but even with all the opportunities provided due to injury, Kelly couldn’t quite crack the rotation and now finds himself without a roster spot.

Although the Rams look to be expecting Kyren Williams to be activated for Week 12, they will keep Henderson around as insurance. The Rams turned to their former third-round pick immediately after injuries moved Williams and Ronnie Rivers off the roster. Despite waiving Henderson in November 2022, the Rams plugged him back in. While Royce Freeman‘s per-carry numbers (4.3) outshine Henderson’s (2.4), the latter scored two touchdowns during his latest run in Sean McVay‘s system. While the Rams waived Henderson again Tuesday, Freeman remains on Los Angeles’ active roster.

Harmon will join team No. 3 this season. The former Patriots Super Bowl winner, a Raider in 2022, began the season with the Ravens. The Bears signed Harmon off Baltimore’s practice squad last month. Harmon, 32, would represent a veteran safety presence for a Browns team that just lost Rodney McLeod for the season.

Jets Sign QB Trevor Siemian From Practice Squad

Nearly two months after he rejoined the Jets, Trevor Siemian is back on their active roster. Set to be the team’s backup in Week 12, Siemian is now officially signed to the 53-man roster.

The well-traveled veteran has spent seven weeks on New York’s practice squad, signing with the team Sept. 26. Tuesday’s transaction will mark a change for the 31-year-old passer, who has not been a gameday elevation this year for the Jets.

The Jets’ latest Zach Wilson benching will send Tim Boyle into the starter’s role and Wilson down to the third-string level. This is how the Jets proceeded when they initially benched Wilson last year, moving Mike White to the QB1 spot and bumping Joe Flacco above Wilson. While Wilson eventually worked his way back to the QB2 position, he only reentered the lineup due to a White injury. Robert Saleh kept the door open for Wilson re-emerging yet again and repeated the expectation (via SNY’s Connor Hughes) the demoted passer will have a good career, but the former No. 2 overall pick has been given considerable time. Through 31 starts, the BYU product has proven incapable of being a viable NFL starter.

Boyle, 29, is by far the least experienced of the Jets’ three healthy quarterbacks. The 2018 Packers UDFA has made three starts and thrown only 120 career passes. Despite Siemian being with the team for nearly two months, Boyle — signed in April to be New York’s third-stringer behind Aaron Rodgers and Wilson — will receive the first start in the wake of Wilson benching No. 3.

Siemian has made 30 career starts, the bulk of them coming in Denver. The Broncos signed off on a historically unusual plan by making Siemian — the third-stringer on their Super Bowl-winning team — their Peyton Manning successor. Siemian beat out Mark Sanchez and Paxton Lynch for that role in 2016 and went 13-11 as Denver’s starter in two seasons. The Broncos, however, traded him to the Vikings after signing ex-Minnesota starter Case Keenum. After a year backing up Kirk Cousins, Siemian signed with the Jets. A season-ending ankle injury sustained during a Week 2 game replacing a mononucleosis-stricken Sam Darnold ended Siemian’s initial Jets stint.

The former seventh-round pick has since been with the Titans, Saints, Bears and Bengals. Siemian lost a preseason competition with Jake Browning to become Joe Burrow‘s backup, a battle that suddenly becomes quite relevant in Southwest Ohio. Although Boyle has been in Nathaniel Hackett‘s system for three years, it would certainly not surprise to see Siemian given a chance for a Jets team (4-6) desperate for a win to stay in the playoff race and keep a potential window for a Rodgers return open.

Jets Expected To Pursue Davante Adams Trade In 2024

Again in quarterback turmoil and likely headed toward their 13th straight season without a playoff berth, the Jets will need to regroup in 2024. Even if Aaron Rodgers‘ long-rumored comeback from Achilles surgery may not end up happening this season, he remains under contract — at a fully guaranteed rate — in 2024.

With Rodgers expected to play a 20th season, the Jets are likely to revisit their attempt to acquire Davante Adams. Looking into Adams this summer and at the trade deadline, ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter notes the Jets have been monitoring the Raiders wide receiver since acquiring Rodgers in April. The embattled AFC East team will be expected to pursue an Adams trade once again next year.

Adams, who will turn 31 next month, is in the second season of a five-year, $140MM contract. The Raiders gave Adams this deal upon acquiring him via trade in March 2022. At that time, Rodgers attempted to convince the All-Pro wide receiver to stay with the Packers. Adams also admitted the Packers’ extension offer bettered the Raiders’ but also indicated Rodgers’ uncertain status in Green Bay steered him away. At the time, the Raiders employed former Adams teammate and longtime friend Derek Carr. Major changes have come to pass in Las Vegas this year, however, complicating Adams’ status with the Raiders.

Cutting Carr and signing Jimmy Garoppolo, the Raiders have already benched the latter. While the team is 2-2 with Aidan O’Connell at the helm this season, the rookie threw three interceptions in a loss to the Dolphins on Sunday. Still, Adams has been more prominently involved in the offense compared to the final weeks of the short-lived Josh McDaniels–Dave Ziegler regime. After voicing frustration with his role in the offense in McDaniels’ final days running the show, the 10th-year veteran has been more content with this Raiders operation. But trade rumors figure to persist.

Although the McDaniels-Ziegler pair made Adams off-limits in trades before the deadline, the Raiders may well have new leadership by the time Adams is again eligible to be dealt. Antonio Pierce and interim GM Champ Kelly are in auditions, but organizations generally do not take interim tags off leaders. Neither Pierce nor Kelly is out of the mix, but both staying will be the less likely scenario than Mark Davis hiring a new HC-GM tandem. Such a decision would seemingly move the Raiders closer to dealing Adams.

It would cost the Raiders $23.6MM in dead money to trade Adams before June 1 of next year, and Schefter adds the Raiders’ decision on their top weapon will also hinge on how this season finishes. Sitting on 741 receiving yards (just 13th in the NFL), Adams is on pace for his fifth 1,000-yard season. Though, he led the NFL in touchdown receptions in 2020 and ’22 and topped 1,500 yards with Carr last year. Adams’ stat line could certainly determine if he asks out of Vegas, and a New York move would make sense.

Despite signing Allen Lazard and Mecole Hardman in free agency, the Jets chased Odell Beckham Jr. largely because of Rodgers’ wishes. The talented wideout instead signed with the Ravens, punting on a Jets visit due to the $15MM guarantee Baltimore proposed. Adams’ accomplishments lap his 2014 classmate’s, and Rodgers would almost definitely be interested in the Jets adding the marquee pass catcher to their Garrett Wilson-dependent receiver stable. Wilson’s 641 receiving yards lead all Jets wideouts by nearly 400; no other Gang Green receiver — amid Zach Wilson‘s continued struggles — has topped 300 this season.

Following his trade to the Jets, Rodgers took issue with the Packers’ approach to Adams’ extension leading up to the blockbuster trade. Rodgers dropped from first to 26th in QBR last year, with the Packers having also let Marquez Valdes-Scantling leave in free agency. An Adams-Wilson duo would represent one of the more talented tandems in recent memory, and although hurdles exist to a reunion, it almost certainly will be a Jets consideration once the season ends.

The Packers will soon be getting some reinforcement on defense, as the team designated safety Darnell Savage Jr. for return from injured reserve today. The defensive back has missed the last four games while recovering from a calf injury. The former first-round pick started all six of his appearances to begin the season, collecting 34 tackles. The fifth-year starter will provide the Packers with a welcome boost when he inevitably returns to the field.

It seems like Green Bay is already preparing for Savage’s return, as the team moved on from another defensive back. Dallin Leavitt spent the past year-plus with the Packers, with the veteran joining the organization following a four-year stint with the Raiders to begin his career. Leavitt got into all 17 games for the Packers in 2022, with all of his snaps coming on special teams. The veteran has seen a handful of defensive snaps in 2023, collecting two tackles in 10 games.
