Browns Rumors

Browns Host Large Workout Including WR Kenny Stills, QB Ben DiNucci

Cleveland hosted one of the larger groups we’ve seen this season for tryouts today, according to Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network. The group consisted of ten players: six skill position players, one offensive lineman, and three defensive tackles.

The Browns’ quarterback position was one of the most talked about stories of the offseason. As it currently stands, presumed starter Deshaun Watson still has seven games remaining on his suspension, interim starter Jacoby Brissett has led the team to a 2-2 start (good for first place in the AFC North), and backups Joshua Dobbs and Kellen Mond have yet to be seen. Still, the team felt the need to offer an audition to former Cowboys quarterback Ben DiNucci. DiNucci has some experience helping out in a tough spot from his time in Dallas two years ago when both starting quarterback Dak Prescott and backup Andy Dalton were injured. He got one opportunity to start against the Eagles before being benched for the winner of a Cooper RushGarrett Gilbert battle. DiNucci recently tried out for a quarterback practice squad spot in Miami that was awarded to Reid Sinnett.

Similarly, the Browns seem set at running back, utilizing a three-man backfield of Nick Chubb, Kareem Hunt, and D’Ernest Johnson. Yet the team auditioned, two running backs today in undrafted rookie Abram Smith and former Ravens practice squad back Nate McCrary. Smith had signed with the Saints out of college but was waived days before the roster cut deadline. During his lone productive season at Baylor, Smith broke the school’s single-season rushing record with 1,601 yards, adding 12 touchdowns to his resume. McCrary came out of Saginaw Valley State last year, signing in Baltimore as an undrafted free agent. He was the Ravens’ leading rusher in the preseason that year, likely due to the litany of injuries at the position that removed carries from J.K. Dobbins, Gus Edwards, and Justice Hill.

Cleveland brought in three wide receivers today including the biggest name of the day, Kenny Stills. The veteran Stills has long seen his most productive years pass by but could still remain an effective deep-threat if needed. Through his first seven years in the league, Stills never averaged less than 14.0 yards per reception and was always good for a few touchdowns. His stats and usage have plummeted in the past two years but, in the right system, Stills could still have some use left in the tank. The team also brought in Jequez Ezzard and Brandon Lewis to audition. Ezzard is a smaller return-specialist who signed with the Commanders after going undrafted out of Sam Houston State this year. Lewis is another smaller receiver who initially signed with Tennessee out of college after going undrafted. Being from the Air Force offense, Lewis never blew up the stat sheet with receiving yards but has a unique skillset to add to an offense as a gadget player who has lots of rushing experience in the Falcons offense.

Another position the Browns brought three players in to audition at was defensive tackle. Cleveland invited Tyler Clark, Prince Emili, and Jordan Williams to work out today. Clark came out of Georgia undrafted two years ago spending time with the Bengals, Chiefs, and Commanders since then but never making an active roster. Emili joined the Bills as an undrafted free agent this year and was even called up to appear in two games on Buffalo’s defense, appearing most recently in the Bills’ win over the Ravens, in which he racked up three tackles and a pass deflection. Williams originally signed with the Dolphins after going undrafted out of Virginia Tech but was waived in mid-August.

Lastly, the Browns worked out undrafted Arkansas offensive tackle Myron Cunningham who initially signed with the Texans but was also waived in mid-August. None of the auditions have resulted in a roster spot yet, practice squad or otherwise, but seeing a group of this size come in for a workout is something to keep an eye on moving forward.

A number of players who were placed on IR after the preseason and prior to the regular season returned to practice today. These players will have a three-week practice window until they have to be activated to the active roster. Otherwise, they’ll be ineligible to return this season.

One of the most surprising returns is Cardinals cornerback Antonio Hamilton. The former undrafted free agent rode a strong preseason to a potential starting gig, but he was sidelined with second-degree burns after spilling hot oil on his legs and feet. Kliff Kingsbury previously said an early-October return may be a “little aggressive” (per ESPN’s Josh Weinfuss on Twitter), but the cornerback ended up working his way back to practice.

Browns To Bring Back TE Pharaoh Brown

Pharaoh Brown went from being the Texans’ Week 1 tight end starter to becoming an early-October cut. But Brown’s previous employer intends to bring him back.

The Browns plan to sign the newly available tight end, Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com tweets. The Cleveland native returned to his hometown Wednesday and will sign on for a second stint.

Brown, 28, played for the Browns in 2019 but had been with the Texans throughout the 2020s. The Browns initially brought in the Oregon alum during the final days of Hue Jackson‘s HC tenure in 2018, and he stayed on for the Freddie Kitchens one-off. The team waived him just ahead of Kevin Stefanski‘s first season at the helm but will circle back.

Houston ponied up $3MM to re-sign the sixth-year veteran this offseason but made some changes to its tight end group in the time since that deal came to pass. The Texans added O.J. Howard and brought back Jordan Akins in September, adding to a position group that includes 2021 fifth-rounder Brevin Jordan.

Not known much for his receiving skills, Brown has topped out at 23 receptions for 171 yards (in 2021). He snagged two touchdown receptions in 2020. Brown has seven catches for 72 yards this season. The former UDFA will rejoin David Njoku in Cleveland, though the rest of the team’s position group has changed since Brown was last with the team. The Browns have Harrison Bryant installed as their backup and Miller Forristall rounding out its tight end crew.

Cine has now undergone two surgeries in London to repair his leg fracture. The first-round pick underwent a preparatory procedure before his Tuesday operation to repair the compound fracture he sustained. The Georgia product will stay in England for the time being, with Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press noting (via Twitter) doctors want to ensure no infections develop. Cine could travel back to Minnesota as soon as this weekend.

Following Latavius Murray off the Saints’ practice squad this week, Wilson did not see any action for the team this season. The former multiyear Vikings starter signed a one-year, $2.75MM Eagles deal in 2021, but Philadelphia bailed on that contract during the season. Wilson, 28, finished last season with the Texans. In his lone full season as a Vikings starter (2020), Wilson made 122 tackles, registered three sacks and intercepted three passes.

Addison signed with the Texans shortly after the draft, joining fellow ex-Bills edge rusher Jerry Hughes in joining the rebuilding team on a two-year deal. The Texans placed Addison on IR with a groin injury; he is eligible to be activated to the 53-man roster this week. Teams can make eight activations from their injured lists — be it IR, PUP or NFI — this season.

Browns Rule Out Myles Garrett For Week 4

OCTOBER 2: Per Adam Schefter of ESPN.com, the shoulder injury is considered the more serious of Garrett’s two major ailments, and it is expected to affect him for up to a month. However, both Schefter and Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (Twitter link) report that Garrett could return as early as next week for Cleveland’s Week 5 bout with the Chargers.

OCTOBER 1: The car accident in which Myles Garrett‘s 2021 Porsche flipped multiple times produced multiple injuries, and while the All-Pro defensive end returned to the Browns’ facility this week, he will not be back on the field in Week 4.

The Browns ruled out Garrett for their Falcons matchup. Monday’s accident left Garrett with a shoulder sprain and biceps strain, along with cuts in other places. After not practicing upon returning, Garrett will have another week to heal up.

This news is not especially surprising, and the outcome of Garrett’s single-car accident Monday afternoon could obviously have been considerably worse. As for the Browns, they could be significantly shorthanded at defensive end. Jadeveon Clowney remains questionable to play against the Falcons, after missing Week 3 due to an ankle injury. But the older of Cleveland’s two former No. 1 overall picks did not practice this week. That is usually an indicator of a player’s impending absence.

Although injury trouble has largely defined Clowney’s NFL career, Garrett has not missed a game due to injury since his 2017 rookie season. His six-game 2019 suspension and a COVID-19 contraction the following season led to Garrett’s only absences in the years since. Since returning after his helmet strike on Mason Rudolph, the Browns’ top pass rusher has accumulated two first-team All-Pro honors. Garrett, 26, is riding a string of four double-digit sack seasons.

The Browns rank 13th in total defense, tightening up against the Steelers after a Week 2 meltdown against the Jets. But removing Garrett from the equation will be a new challenge. The Browns used a third-round pick on Alex Wright and started him in Clowney’s place in Week 3. Wright has played 52% of the Browns’ defensive snaps thus far, and the 6-foot-7 defensive end already has two pass batdowns as a pro. The team has veteran Isaac Rochell and seventh-round rookie Isaiah Thomas on its 53-man roster at the position as well.
