Titans Release T Geron Christian, Reduce Roster To 53

Here is how the Titans trimmed their offseason roster to the regular-season limit:

The Titans cut a player they acquired in an offseason trade. Watson played for new O-line coach Bill Callahan in Cleveland, but Tennessee could not find room for the former seventh-round pick. Watson must pass through waivers before a practice squad invite can be extended. Christian will head straight to free agency as a vested veteran. The former Washington and Houston starter did not make Tennessee’s roster as a swing option. Christian (25 career starts) finished last season as the Browns’ left tackle under Callahan, as injuries ravaged Cleveland’s O-line. With Christian also playing for Callahan in Washington, he could be a player to monitor for a veteran practice squad slot.

Once a Titans slot receiver hopeful, Philips is off the roster with an injury designation. Philips saw shoulder and hamstring trouble derail his route to Tennessee’s starting lineup as a rookie, and he returned for nine games in 2023. Tennessee made some key additions to its receiving corps this offseason, signing Calvin Ridley and Tyler Boyd to join DeAndre Hopkins and former first-rounder Treylon Burks. Another hamstring issue limited Philips ahead of this season.

Campbell suffered a torn ACL, while McLendon also did not receive a return designation. That will put the second-year player out of the mix for the 2024 Titans.

Chiefs Trim Roster To 53

Moving on from wideouts Kadarius Toney and Justyn Ross, the Chiefs are down to 53. Here is how the two-time defending champs got there:

Drafted in the 2020 third round with a path toward becoming the Chiefs’ starting right tackle, Niang has been unable to stay healthy. Niang’s contract tolled after he opted out of the 2020 season, and while he did start nine games during the ’21 campaign, the team has been unable to count on the TCU alum. Niang suffered a torn patellar tendon late in the 2021 slate and missed most of the ’22 season. Andrew Wylie took over at RT, and the Chiefs signed Jawaan Taylor to a $20MM-per-year deal in 2023.

The team traded for Cowboys tight end Peyton Hendershot earlier today, having done so months after drafting TCU’s Jared Wiley in Round 4. This will lead Smith off the roster. A second-generation NFL tight end, Smith has 21 starts on his resume but has also dealt with significant injury trouble.

Many of these players will end up on Kansas City’s practice squad, which can house up to six vested veterans. Waived players can begin joining teams’ P-squads — if they go unclaimed, that is — beginning at 11am CT on Wednesday.

Bengals Cut Roster Down To 53 Players

No surprises in Cincinnati this evening. Ivey will start the year on PUP after he tore his ACL late last year. Murphy and Robbins will be forced to miss the first four games of the season, as well, but since they’ve been designated for return, they will have the option to return at some point in the season.

Woodside was unable to beat out Jake Browning for the honor of backing up Joe Burrow, who has missed a decent amount of time since getting drafted.

The Bengals retained all of their draft picks from this past April with all 10 making the initial roster. The undrafted group had a bit less luck, but Wisconsin linebacker Maema Njongmeta will enter the year on the active roster. Robinson was waived with an injury designation and may make a return via the IR.

Giants Place Isaiah McKenzie On IR, Move Roster To 53

Just as the NFL greenlit a full-on kickoff revamp, McKenzie is out of the picture in New York. Signing with the Giants this year and completing a reunion with ex-Bills staffers Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll, McKenzie has been a return man and slot receiver for seven seasons. This transaction, unlike the Adams designation, will knock the 5-foot-7 cog out for the year. McKenzie only received $75K guaranteed.

McKenzie joins Hodgins among the players not currently in the mix for the team. The Giants received good value from the former waiver claim, who was a Bills teammate of McKenzie’s under Daboll earlier his career. They brought him back after non-tendering him as an RFA in March, and he and Robinson were battling for back-end receiver jobs. The Giants kept Bryce Ford-Wheaton, a 2023 UDFA, over Hodgins. Considering Hodgins’ past with Daboll, it would not surprise to see New York circle back with a potential practice squad invite. Though, the fifth-year veteran might have other options.

Beavers was viewed as a potential inside linebacker starter in 2023, but Micah McFadden ended up beating out the former sixth-round pick. Beavers played in only two games last season. Cager also was considered a contender to be one of the Giants’ receiving tight ends, but the converted wideout fell short. Daniel Bellinger and fourth-round rookie Theo Johnson are leading the way post-Darren Waller.

Bills To Add Mike White To Practice Squad

Mike White is working his way toward an AFC East cycle. The former Jets backup/occasional starter, released by the Dolphins this week, will catch on with the Bills after visiting.

The Bills are carrying Mitchell Trubisky behind Josh Allen; White will join the Buffalo practice squad, per NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero. This gives the four-time reigning AFC East champions an experienced option behind the former first-round picks.

Spending last year as Tua Tagovailoa‘s top backup, White lost the job to Skylar Thompson after Miami’s preseason slate. The Dolphins had given White a two-year, $10MM deal in 2023. He will settle for far less as a P-squad option.

Teams no longer have unlimited elevations for quarterbacks, thanks to the NFLPA nixing the would-be rule change. But Buffalo has not seen Allen miss any starts due to injury since his rookie season. That would make this one of the more likely teams to go with a two-QB setup.

White’s most notable NFL work came in New York. He became quite popular among Jets fans during Zach Wilson‘s tenure, replacing the struggling No. 2 overall pick due to injury and then for performance reasons. White helped the Jets to an upset win over the Bengals in 2021, becoming the first Jet QB to surpass 400 passing yards in a game since Vinny Testaverde. White, 29, is 2-5 as a starter and carries a 62.6% completion rate to Buffalo.

Teams are allotted six spots on their P-squads for vested veterans. With Trubisky not playing well in Pittsburgh — or for most of his pro career — the Bills have a potential QB2 option set to join their 16-man taxi squad.

Texans Place Case Keenum On Season-Ending IR, Reduce Roster To 53

Keenum was headed into the second season of a two-year deal with his original NFL team, but a major injury will sidetrack the veteran arm. A foot injury will sideline the 36-year-old quarterback, KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson tweets. Keenum is expected to be down for three or four months, The Athletic’s Dianna Russini adds. Houston still has Davis Mills, who is in a contract year, as its top backup behind C.J. Stroud.

A calf injury will shut down Harris for the time being, Wilson adds. The Texans used both their allotted IR-return moves. The team used the 2022 third-round pick as a 12-game starter last season. Harris has played at least 71% of the Texans’ defensive snaps in both of his seasons, explaining his being prioritized via the NFL’s IR rule tweak. Despite being a 2022 UDFA, Hinish has been a key rotational player in Houston in each of his two pro seasons.

Horton is in remission from his bout with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The second-year player completed his final treatment this spring but did not practice with the team during training camp. The Texans’ run of WR cuts leaves 2022 second-rounder John Metchie, who missed his rookie season after a leukemia diagnosis, and Robert Woods on the roster behind starters Nico Collins, Tank Dell and Stefon Diggs. Cutting Jordan, a sixth-round pick from Louisville, leaves Dameon Pierce, Dare Ogunbowale and Cam Akers rostered behind Joe Mixon.

Chargers Waive RB Isaiah Spiller, T Alex Leatherwood; Get Down To 53

There aren’t too many surprises here. Of the veterans, Parham fell victim to the addition of two veteran receiving options, and Quarterman was a long-time special teamer.

Michigan wide receiver Johnson was the only drafted rookie who failed to make the roster after being selected in the seventh round. While no undrafted rookies made the roster either, McLellan and Williams will stick around on the IR, where they will remain out for the year. Niemann will have the option to be activated after four games.

The biggest cuts we otherwise see are Spiller, who got some run as a depth option at running back last year, and Leatherwood. Leatherwood, the former first-round pick out of Alabama, continues to struggle to find his place in the NFL.

Browns Release RB D’Onta Foreman, Trim Roster To 53

The Browns kept four quarterbacks on their active roster, using other position groups to make their way down to 53. Here is how Cleveland maneuvered there:

Kevin Stefanski pointed to Foreman not being out of the picture, alluding this only being the team’s initial 53-man roster. The veteran back, who signed as a depth/rotational option this offseason, should be expected back, cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot tweets. Teams can use up to six practice squad slots on vested veterans. This is Foreman’s fourth team in four years, but he has managed to play regular roles for each. The Browns also have their two other high-profile options — Chubb and Hines — out for at least four games, as they recover from 2023 injuries.

Cleveland considered trading Jameis Winston or Tyler Huntley, with second-year QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson showing enough improvement to have made the 53-man roster. But the team stopped short and made the rare move to carry four active-roster arms. One of the non-Deshaun Watson passers could be vulnerable, however, as the waiver wire will come into play soon. Winston and Huntley are vested vets and would head straight to free agency if released; Thompson-Robinson would need to pass through waivers. Teams often prioritize those players on cutdown day.

Hall is out of the picture for the foreseeable future, as his legal issue runs its course, and Wypler is out for the year with a broken ankle. The Browns designated Dunn for return. This will cut into Cleveland’s eight injury activations, and while the veteran blocker will miss at least four games, the team prioritized his comeback enough to use this early designation. Dunn has been with the team since 2020.

Cardinals Get Down To 53

The Cardinals finalized their initial 53-man roster with the following moves:

We’ve already reported on the most notable name, Ridder. The Cardinals instead opted to rely on second-year passer Clayton Tune to back up Kyler Murray behind center. There’s still a chance Ridder could remain on the practice squad as QB3.

Robinson and Jones will miss the first four games of the season, but both have been designated to return from IR eventually. Jones Jr. will miss the 2024 season, though.

Two rookie draft picks failed to make the 53-man. Alabama Birmingham receiver Palmer (sixth-round) and Miami (FL) cornerback Davis (seventh-round) both hit the waiver wire following the preseason. Undrafted receiver Xavier Weaver out of Colorado, does make the roster, though.

Other surprises were the cutting of Carter and Barnes. Carter struggled last year before parting ways with the Jets, who drafted him in the fourth round in 2021. Six games in Arizona last year were not enough to warrant a return in 2024 on the active roster. Carter had been shopped around a bit as of late, but with no buyers, he hits the waiver wire. Barnes started six games for the team last year after three years in Green Bay, where he started 24 games.

WR Tim Patrick Expected To Join Lions

Tim Patrick was let go by the Broncos earlier today after no trade partner could be found. The veteran wideout has not needed to wait long to find his next home, however.

Patrick is expected to sign with the Lions, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports. This will be a practice squad agreement at first with the plan being to move him to the active roster in short order. That move has become increasingly popular around the NFL as it pertains to veteran additions, and in Patrick’s case it will allow him to compete for a notable receiving role in Detroit.

The 30-year-old missed all of 2022 and ’23 due to ACL and Achilles tears, respectively. Those major ailments led to questions about his roster status with the Broncos moving forward, but upon returning to full health he seemed to have a spot lined up in Denver. It was learned yesterday, however, that the team was shopping him in an effort to work out a trade. After no deal on that front materialized, Patrick was among the Broncos’ final cuts.

The former UDFA played with Denver from 2018-21. Over the final two years of that stretch in particular, he established himself as a full-time starter and impact producer. Patrick totaled 1,476 yards and 11 touchdowns during his last two Broncos campaigns, but after missing the past two seasons altogether it would have been fair to wonder if he would have drawn early interest in free agency. The Lions have proven that to be true.

Detroit’s passing game is set to once again be led by All-Pro wideout Amon-Ra St. Brown and record-breaking tight end Sam LaPorta in 2024. While former first-rounder Jameson Williams is positioned to take on the WR2 role, the Lions’ depth has been a talking point since Josh Reynolds departed (to the Broncos, as it turned out) in free agency. Donovan Peoples-Jones was let go, creating a vacancy in the receiving corps. Patrick will spend the coming weeks attempting to fill it.
