Seahawks Trade Ahkello Witherspoon To Steelers

The Seahawks are trading cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon to the Steelers (Twitter link via NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport). In exchange, the Steelers will send a 2023 fifth-round choice to Seattle.

Witherspoon left the rival 49ers to join the Seahawks in March. A third-round pick in the 2017 draft, Witherspoon turned in a strong rookie campaign for SF. Then, he regressed in his second pro season. He was benched several times in 2018, and he ultimately graded out as the worst full-time corner that year, per Pro Football Focus’ metrics.

He did show some signs of life in his platform season, however. Though he started just four games and appeared in only 32% of San Francisco’s defensive snaps in 2020 — both career-low marks — PFF considered him a top-10 corner in terms of coverage ability. In addition to the Seahawks, the Jets, Broncos, and Panthers also showed interest in Witherspoon. Now, he’ll try to fortify the Steelers’ secondary.

Seahawks To Add Ex-Baylor Hoops Starter Mark Vital To Practice Squad

The Seahawks will try another basketball-to-football conversion effort. They are signing former Baylor hoops starter Mark Vital to their practice squad, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets.

Vital stands 6-foot-5, 250 pounds and follows a few ex-basketball players to the Seahawks. The Seahawks have some experience with this, having converted George Fant from the hardwood to the gridiron and having traded for Jimmy Graham. Darren Fells‘ NFL transition also began in Seattle as a UDFA, after a college basketball career.

A starter for all 30 games during Baylor’s 2020-21 national championship-winning season, Vital averaged 5.6 points and 6.7 rebounds per game as a senior. Vital scored six points but was crucial on the offensive glass during Baylor’s win over Gonzaga in April, grabbing eight offensive rebounds in the runaway victory.

He is expected to line up at tight end, Rapoport adds. This is certainly the common position for ex-hoops cogs, as Graham, Fells, Julius Thomas, Antonio Gates and others have shown. Though, Fant became a tackle.

The Trail Blazers signed Vital for summer league action this year, but the 24-year-old will make the much rarer move to the NFL. The Louisiana native has not played football since the eighth grade, however.

Seahawks Shift Cedric Ogbuehi To IR

Cedric Ogbuehi‘s second Seahawks season will not start on time. The team placed the veteran tackle on IR Thursday. This will sideline Ogbuehi until at least Week 4.

The former first-round pick is dealing with a biceps injury presently, so the Seahawks will need to adjust their second-string offensive line plans. Ogbuehi re-signed with Seattle this offseason. Going into his seventh year, Ogbuehi is expected to be Brandon Shell‘s primary backup at right tackle.

Ogbuehi played just eight games in 2020, starting four, but did enough to return to the Seahawks — his third NFL team. The Bengals drafted Ogbuehi in 2015, but after he did not meet expectations, the Texas A&M product had to settle for a low-cost Jaguars deal in 2019 before coming to Seattle.

The Seahawks added a tackle on the waiver wire Wednesday, bringing in ex-49ers blocker Dakoda Shepley. He joins Jamarco Jones and rookie Stone Forsythe as backup Hawks tackles. Though Shell and Duane Brown comprise Seattle’s optimal tackle duo, Brown remains out of the mix due to a hold-in effort. The Pro Bowler has not practiced since last season, putting the Seahawks in a tight spot as the season nears.

Wednesday NFL Transactions: NFC West

Following the 53-man roster cutdown deadline Tuesday, many teams will make slight tweaks to their rosters. In addition to waiver claims, teams can begin constructing their 16-man practice squads today. These CardinalsRamsSeahawks and 49ers moves are noted below.

Here are Wednesday’s NFC West transactions, which will continue to be updated throughout the day.

Seahawks Get Below Roster Limit

The Seahawks got their roster down to 52 players today. The organization made the following moves:

Released

Waived

The extra roster spot is reserved for cornerback Sidney Jones once the team completes their trade with the Jaguars.

Simmons emerged as a potential piece for the Seahawks in 2020. After seeing time in only six games through his first two professional seasons, the offensive lineman started six of his 14 games for Seattle last season while appearing on 56-percent of the team’s offensive snaps.

Seahawks To Waive CB John Reid

John Reid has landed in the news a few times over the past several days. Shortly after acquiring the second-year cornerback via trade, the Seahawks are waiving him, Tom Pelissero of NFL.com tweets.

Amid a busy stretch for the Texans at cornerback, they shipped Reid to Seattle. While this trade did not lead to the 2020 fourth-round pick commandeering a roster spot, it would not be surprising if Reid landed on Seattle’s 16-man practice squad — should he clear waivers.

The Texans took Reid 141st overall in 2020 and used him in 13 games. Reid logged 145 defensive snaps during his rookie year. While the 5-foot-10 corner does not have much NFL experience, he did have a four-season role with the Nittany Lions, with whom he intercepted seven passes from 2015-19.

It will be interesting to see how the Seahawks’ cornerback group looks when they take the field in Week 1. They added Ahkello Witherspoon and used a fourth-round pick on Tre Brown this year, but the team did not do too much to address this position after Shaquill Griffin‘s free agency exit.

Jaguars Trade CB Sidney Jones To Seahawks

Sidney Jones is heading to Seattle. The Jaguars announced that they’ve traded the cornerback to the Seahawks. Jacksonville will acquire a 2022 sixth-round pick in the trade, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero (via Twitter).

The former second-round pick spent the first three seasons of his career with the Eagles, but he only saw time in 22 games (eight starts) during his stint in Philly. After getting waived at the end of the 2020 preseason, Jones caught on with the Jaguars, and he proceeded to have a career season for his new team. The cornerback saw time in nine games (six starts) for Jacksonville, finishing with 26 tackles, nine passes defended, and a pair of interceptions.

Jones was expected to slot in as a backup for Jacksonville in 2021, and he’ll see a similar role in Seattle. Considering the Seahawks only gave up a late-round pick for the 25-year-old, it’s presumably a low-risk move with upside. Tre Flowers and Ahkello Witherspoon are listed as starters for Seattle, but Jones could compete with the likes of John Reid, D.J. Reed, Tre Brown, and Will Sunderland for backup reps.
