Bobby Richardson

Giants Down To 53

The Giants are all kosher. Here’s the full rundown of their cuts and moves to get to 53:

Cut:

Placed on IR:

Giants Sign DL Bobby Richardson

The Giants have signed free agent defensive lineman Bobby Richardson and placed defensive tackle Corbin Bryant on injured reserve, the club announced today.Bobby Richardson (Vertical)

Richardson will now join his fifth NFL club, but he’s still only 24 years old. Although he didn’t see the field last season, Richardson did start 11 games (and made 15 appearances) for the Saints during his rookie campaign in 2015. During that season, he managed 40 total tackles and half-sack while playing on roughly half of New Orleans’ defensive snaps.

Since that time, Richardson has bounced around the league, seeing time on both offseason and practice rosters with the Redskins, Chiefs, and — most recently — the Broncos. Now with the Giants, Richardson will compete with Romeo Okwara, Devin Taylor, Avery Moss, Kerry Williams, and Ishaq Williams to earn a back-end roster spot.

Bryant, meanwhile, signed a one-year, minimum salary benefit deal with the Giants this offseason after spending the past five years in Buffalo. The 29-year-old only appeared in half of the Bills’ 2016 games before being sent to injured reserve with a shoulder injury. This time around, it’s a dislocated elbow that’s landing Bryant on IR, per Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com. Bryant could conceivably be released with an injury settlement at some point down the road, allowing him to latch on with another team.

Extra Points: Broncos, Barron, Vikings

The Broncos running back depth chart is currently crowded with intriguing names (including Jamaal CharlesC.J. AndersonDevontae Booker, and rookie De’Angelo Henderson), and head coach Vance Joseph expects to rely on a running back-by-committee approach.

“Every position on our football team is going to be competitive,” Joseph said (via Michael David Smith of ProFootballTalk.com). “The running back position, you need two or three guys who are going to carry the load. It’s no longer a one-guy position. I’m excited to have Jamaal, C.J., Book, even De’Angelo in the mix there. It’s a good group, it’s going to be competitive and that’s the way it should be.”

Let’s take a look at some other notes from around the NFL…

  • Previous defensive coordinators have used Mark Barron all around the field, but Rams defensive coordinator Wade Phillips said he’ll solely be using the veteran at linebacker. “He’s really instinctive,” Phillips said (via ESPN.com’s Alden Gonzalez). “He’s got great speed, and we can utilize his coverage ability at linebacker. It gives you more options as far as things you want to do defensively. If you get a guy like that who can cover people, then we’re going to utilize that.”
  • Former Nebraska quarterback Tommy Armstrong will not be joining the Vikings, the player tweeted on Thursday night (via Chris Tomasson of TwinCities.com). The 23-year-old participated in the team’s minicamp last week as a running back and safety. Armstrong later said that Vikings defensive backs coach Jerry Gray told him he’d be back for OTAs, but that doesn’t appear to be the case.
  • Free agent defensive end Bobby Richardson will be attending the Titans‘ rookie minicamp, reports Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times (via Twitter). Richardson broke onto the scene as an undrafted rookie in 2015, playing in 15 games (11 starts) for the Saints while compiling 40 tackles and one interception. He’s bounced around since that time, spending time with the Redskins, Chiefs, and Broncos.

Broncos Re-Sign DL Billy Winn

The Broncos have agreed to re-sign defensive lineman Billy Winn, the club announced today.Billy Winn (Vertical)

Denver signed Winn last summer to serve as depth along its defensive line following the loss of Vance Walker to an ACL injury, and Winn provided just that. The 28-year-old appeared in all 16 games (two starts) and played on roughly 30% of the Broncos’ defensive snaps. In that time, Winn 19 tackles and one fumble recovery while grading as the league’s No. 97 interior defender among 127 qualifiers, per Pro Football Focus.

The Broncos have steadily added to their defensive line over the past few months, as they signed free agents Domata Peko, Zach Kerr, Kasim Edebali, and Bobby Richardson while expending a second-round draft pick on Florida State’s DeMarcus Walker. Last year’s second-round pick, defensive end Adam Gotsis, is also expected to play a larger role in 2017. As such, Winn could have a tougher time earning a spot on Denver’s final roster than he did in 2016.

One defender who won’t be competing for a roster spot in 2017 is Bobby Richardson, whom the Broncos announced was waived today. Richardson, 24, started 11 games as a Saints rookie in 2015, but hasn’t seen an NFL field since. He had just signed with Denver in February.

Minor NFL Transactions: 2/24/17

Friday’s minor moves:

  • The Giants signed long snapper Zak DeOssie to a new two-year contract, according to a source who spoke with Aaron Wilson of The Houston Chronicle (on Twitter). DeOssie, 32, has been a Giant since they selected him in the fourth round of the 2007 draft.
  • The Broncos signed defensive lineman Bobby Richardson, as Mike Klis of 9NEWS tweets. The 24-year-old Richardson had brief stays on the practice squads of the Redskins and Chiefs last season. Prior to that, the ex-Saint started in 11 of 15 appearances as a rookie in 2015 and posted 40 tackles to go with an interception.
  • The 49ers announced the signing of wide receiver DeAndre Carter to a two-year deal. Carter, who played his college football at Sacramento State, went undrafted in 2015 and has since spent time with the Ravens, Raiders and Patriots.

NFL Workout Updates: 11/15/16

The Colts worked out a cadre of players today, including veteran offensive lineman Dallas Thomas, according to Adam Caplan of ESPN.com (Twitter link). Thomas, 27, started 26 games during his four-year career with Miami, but was cut earlier this year. Indianapolis also auditioned cornerback Will Davis, wide receivers Antwan Goodley and Dres Anderson, and linebacker Davis Tull.

Here’s more from the workout circuit:

  • With Cameron Heyward out for the year, the Steelers tried out defensive end Bobby Richardson today, tweets Nick Underhill of the Advocate. Richardson was a 11-game starter during his rookie season in 2015, but has bounced around the league during his sophomore campaign.
  • Former Colts defensive back D’Joun Smith worked out for the Packers today, reports Caplan (Twitter link). Smith was a third-round pick in 2015.
  • The Seahawks worked out defensive lineman Shaneil Jenkins, per Caplan (Twitter link).
  • The Eagles took a look at wide receiver Kenny Lawler and fullback Chris Swain, tweets Caplan.
  • Lawler has been busy this week, as Caplan reports (Twitter link) that he also worked out for the Chiefs.
  • The Jaguars auditioned offensive tackle Rob Crisp, according to Howard Balzer (Twitter link).
  • The Buccaneers worked out offensive lineman Mike Liedtke, tweets Balzer.
  • In search of linebacker depth, the Titans tried out free agent Reshard Cliett today, per Balzer (Twitter link).

AFC Notes: Chiefs, Bills, Texans, Browns

The Chiefs announced that they have ruled out running back Jamaal Charles for Sunday’s game against Indianapolis. The team says it’s being careful with the four-time Pro bowler given that he suffered a torn ACL last year. In place of Charles, who has only 12 carries in three appearances this season, the Chiefs will continue leaning on Spencer Ware. The third-year man has held his own with nearly 800 total yards (492 rushing, 285 receiving) and three touchdowns in the Chiefs’ first six games.

More regarding Kansas City and three other AFC teams:

  • Bills general manager Doug Whaley tells WGR 550 the trade market has been “relatively quiet,” but he thinks it will pick up after Sunday (Twitter link via ESPN.com’s Mike Rodak). He added that the Bills would not hesitate to make a trade before Tuesday’s deadline.
  • Texans head coach Bill O’Brien classifies running back Lamar Miller as a game-time decision for Sunday’s contest against the Lions, according to Aaron Wilson of The Houston Chronicle (on Twitter). Miller suffered a bruised shoulder in the Texans’ loss to the Broncos on Monday, but he plans to play through it, writes Sarah Barshop of ESPN.com. Miller and backup Alfred Blue picked up 11 carries apiece in Denver.
  • In addition to the previously reported Cayleb Jones, Jeremiah McKinnon, Blake Muir and James Vaughters, the Chiefs worked out defensive end Bobby Richardson on Tuesday, per Terez A. Paylor of the Kansas City Star (Twitter link). Richardson started in 11 of 15 appearances as a rookie with the Saints last year, though he didn’t make much of an impact statistically (20 tackles, half a sack).
  • Safety Justin Currie is in Cleveland today for a tryout with the Browns, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com tweets. Currie went undrafted from Western Michigan last year and spent time wth the Giants.
