Late last month, a report on the respective futures of Giants general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll indicated that both men were likely to retain their jobs for the 2025 season. However, our Sam Robinson noted at the time that owner John Mara’s history with such matters would suggest Schoen is safer than Daboll, and multiple outlets have confirmed that the GM and HC are not a “package deal.”
In other words, although Schoen and Daboll were both hired in January 2022 following their successful tenures with the Bills, Mara will evaluate them separately at the end of the season and is open to retaining one and firing the other, as Dianna Russini of The Athletic reports (subscription required). Per Russini, there are increased rumblings around the league that Daboll could receive his walking papers, while Schoen continues to believe his job is secure (just as he has throughout the year).
A source close to Mara did indicate that the owner – who said in October that he planned to give Schoen and Daboll another opportunity in 2025 – intends to stay true to his word. However, the fact that the Giants have not won a game since October 6 could obviously change things, and Russini says Mara will sit down with his top power brokers at season’s end, at which point he will presumably make his final decision.
Interestingly, Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero of NFL.com use the same terminology as Russini, noting that Schoen and Daboll are not a package deal and could be facing different fates in several weeks’ time. Like Russini, the NFL.com duo hears that Mara does not want to make a change, and that he believes his 2022 hirees remain highly capable.
While any GM or HC change qualifies as a watershed event in a club’s timeline, the Giants could soon be facing an especially critical moment. As a result of New York’s current 10-game losing streak, it is poised to secure the No. 1 overall selection of the 2025 draft and, by extension, a franchise signal-caller. Mara will have to determine, among other things, whether Schoen is the right person to make the pick and whether Daboll is the right person to develop whichever player is selected. Given how the last two campaigns have unfolded, those will not be easy questions to answer.
Should the Giants lose to the Colts today, they will have gone an entire season without a home victory for the first time since 1974 (h/t Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News). They are also on pace for their worst overall record since 1966, when they finished 1-12-1 (h/t Rapoport and Pelissero).
In a recent poll, the majority of PFR readership expected Mara to ultimately part ways with both Schoen and Daboll, while roughly 22% of voters expected both men to be retained. About 17% predicted Mara will keep Schoen and can Daboll, and a scenario wherein Schoen is fired but Daboll retained was viewed as the least likely.
If they keep Schoen, which I believe they will, Giants fans will be watching some bad football for quite a few years. He’s already shown he cannot do the job.
Has he hit on any draft picks or FAs? That’s a bottom of the mill roster.
Thibodeaux has 20 sacks in 3 seasons.
Wandale Robinsons been decent when healthy but QB play hinders his production
Jalinn Hyatt was brought in to be a vertical threat but no QB can actually throw it that far.
Michael Schmitz has been a decent center.
His recent draft class is probably his best with Nabers Nubin Tracy Johnson
But he also inherited a mess. Previous regimes well their draft picks lasted 7 or less years as 1st-4th round picks. And ones that lasted longer left right around the end of their rookie contract in most instances or few years after.
13- Pugh, Hankins, Moore, Nassib. Pugh lasted 10 years and Hankins 11+. Moore lasted 5 and Nassib 2
14- Beckham (still going elsehwhere ) Richburg 5, Bromley 4, Williams 3
15 – Flowers 7 years 4 in nyg, Collins 8 years 5 in nyg, odighizuma 2 years
16- Apple still going elsewhere 3 in nyg, shephard still going elsewhere 8 a nyg, Thompson 5, Goodson 5
17- engram still going 5 years in nyg, Tomlinson still going 4 in nyg, Webb 5 years, Gallman 4 years
18- saquon 7 years in nyg, Hernandez 4 years in nyg, Carter 4 years in nyg, hill 3 years in nyg all 4 still going
19- jones 6 years gone, Lawrence 6 years still here, baker 3 years, ximines 6 years 5 in NYG now in NE, Love 4 years in NYG now in SEA
20 –
Thomas still here, McKinney now in GB, Peart in DEN, Holmes in LVR
21 –
Toney gone
Ojulari still here
Robinson lasted 2 years
Elerson lasted 2 years and missed 23 Now with CLE
9 drafts prior to Shoen and giants have seriously missed on many 1st 2nd 3rd 4th round picks. And the ones they did hit on are playing elsewhere in many instances long before Shoen showed up.
The one constant these last 12 years (9 prior Shoen and 3 current) is giants are reluctant to keep guys around for a second contract. That tells me it’s an ownership issue and gms are being set up to fail when they don’t have the authority to issue extensions to your own players.
You’re saying Thibodeaux is his only hit then. As for previous regimes, that was from 3 years ago. DC has cleaned out a ton of misses Ron did this season.
Thib, Schmitz, Robinson, Tracy, Nabers, Nubin have been his hits so far.
Previous regimes left him little to no building blocks. The best one? Dexter Lawrence. The fact the giants don’t have guys 8 years ago 7 years ago 6 years ago 5 years ago 4 years ago from their drafts rounds 1-4 and guys they did draft are elsewhere instead of on the giants are major red flags.
Shoen offered Barkley a contract Philly offered 1 mill more than what Shoen offered. Can’t fault Barkley for realizing giants have an ownership issue and until that’s resolved no GM is gonna be successful. Giants also were willing to pay McKinney 14 mill a year. Green Bay offered 17. Again comparable salaries and if a guys happy where he’s at he’d typically stay with the organization hes familiar with. But for guys to bolt over a 1 mill and 3 mill difference says giants have a lot of issue well beyond the GM position.
You keep adding Thib to this list and as the #5 overall pick, he’s been woefully inconsistent and not very much of an impact most of the time.
Also, Schmitz is pretty average and Schoen got lucky with Tracy who basically was drafted to be special teams fodder at best…..overall…pretty less than ordinary draft successes for Schoen…….and all this with the Giants drafting consisting very low in the draft…..
20 sacks is 20 sacks no matter how you count them. That also doesn’t include pressure or qb hits or other ways defenders impact the game.
He also has posted above average grades for his pass rush and run defense every year he’s been in the league.
Yeah real shocker why I include him when the data says he’s been a solid contributor every year.
Harrison: Beckham is out of the league and nobody’s gonna sign him cos he looks finished.
He signed with Miami this year did nothing and is completely washed but he’s still getting job opportunities.
Letting Barkley walk will follow him around forever.
Totally agree with you. I for one will be done with this team after being a fan since the 70’s. Schoen has not done anything t warrant confidence in his ability to evaluate players or make good decisions. To me Hard Knocks really sealed his fate.
In fairness, his most recent draft has a few picks looking good. Unfortunately that’s a change for him.
In hindsight, not bringing back Barkley wrecked their offense.
Wile re-upping Jones. Shows bad FO management.
Choosing Jones over Barkley was a huge mistake!
This is interesting: Tyrone Tracey is averaging 4.6 yards per carry in his rookie season, while Barkley didn’t have and average that high with the Giants since 2019. Last season with the Giants Saquon only averaged 3.9. Both backs have had to play behind lousy offensive lines while in NY.
Schoen is the one who should go for the way he botched the Barkley/Jones saga so badly…
While keeping the “Coach of the Year” that gets his ass kicked by the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles. Daboll’s final game could be in Philly.
No planes flying over the stadium today due to fog and rain.
There’s no such thing as half a disaster. The Giants need to move on from Schoen and Daboll yesterday.
Reading the media tea leaves they’re either keeping both or firing Daboll.
The media didn’t think McAdoo and Reese would both get fired on the same day. That’s cos the media, in NYC especially, are gentle on the Giants.
Would somebody PLEASE replace mr. Mara, because he knows nothing about football, even though he has done nothing else since the team was handed to him!
And the throat cutting begins.
Joe’s record as the GM is 17-31-1. Enough said, he sucks.
A perfect example of the instant gratification expectation of today. None of us know the behind the scenes of these clubs or what the players wanted or not. Barkley wanted out especially when Philly came calling. Only a tremendous overpay would have kept him in NY. It all comes down to the QB. They banked on Jones and without improving their O-line he failed, so too did the club. Nabers looks like a fantastic pick if they can improve their O-line and get a competent QB. Not sure where that QB is going to come from this year.
And guess who’s taken over #1 in the Tankathon going into Week 18? The New England Patriots.
Great job by that fraud “Coach of the Year” Brian Daboll.
So?
Last 2 draft picks went
Williams 1 Daniels 2
Young 1 Stroud 2
No guarantee first QB off the board is the best QB.
not a package deal? Like how I have to put both my trash and recyclables out on the curb in separate packages but they get taken away by the same garbage company?
They give good head-ache … haha
