Panthers Looking To Add Pass Rusher

Carolina lost Haason Reddick early in free agency and did not enter the draft holding a Day 2 pick. While the Panthers acquired a third-rounder, they used it to take Matt Corral. After addressing their top needs with their first two selections, the Panthers did not use one of their remaining choices on an edge rusher and are somewhat thin at that position.

Brian Burns returns to anchor Carolina’s edge group, and 2020 second-rounder Yetur Gross-Matos has two years left on his contract, but the team is looking into help here, Joe Person of The Athletic notes (subscription required). Carolina’s $25MM-plus in cap space sits second in the league, and several talented pass rushers remain in free agency.

GM Scott Fitterer was with the Seahawks during Jadeveon Clowney‘s 2019 Seattle season. The Browns are interested in re-signing Clowney, a South Carolina native, but the former No. 1 overall pick is not in a rush. Jason Pierre-Paul, Justin Houston, Melvin Ingram and Trey Flowers are the other top names available. Flowers, 28, is the only member of the latter contingent south of 30. He also struggled while on his big-ticket Lions contract. The Ravens and Chiefs, respectively, placed UFA tenders on Houston and Ingram. This does not tie either player to those AFC teams, but both are entitled to 110% of their 2021 salaries. Whitney Mercilus and Ryan Kerrigan are also available.

Working in rotational roles in 2020 and ’21, Gross-Matos has six career sacks and 10 quarterback hits. The Panthers re-signed 2018 fourth-round pick Marquis Haynes, who combined for seven sacks in that span. The Panthers could see some of their salary cap space turn into Baker Mayfield, but the team wants the Browns to eat a sizable chunk of the quarterback’s salary in a trade. Carolina should still have some free funds to pursue a veteran edge — likely on a one-year deal — should Fitterer, Matt Rhule and Co. deem Burns’ current supporting cast insufficient.

Burns, who is now extension-eligible, attended Carolina’s initial OTAs but is now working out on his own in Florida, per Person. He is expected to attend the team’s mandatory June minicamp. The Panthers picked up Burns’ fifth-year option for 2023, fully guaranteeing him a $16MM salary next year. Teams are often hesitant about extending non-quarterbacks with two years of control remaining, though Fitterer has indicated a desire to extend Burns. The Panthers also have shown a willingness to do early extensions, having given Christian McCaffrey a record-setting deal when two years remained on his rookie contract. They waited until this offseason to extend D.J. Moore, who was to go into his fifth-year option season.

Latest On Broncos WR Jerry Jeudy

Jerry Jeudy was released from the Arapahoe County (Colorado) Jail on Friday and has since met with first-year Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett, Ryan O’Halloran of the Denver Post notes.

Although Jeudy was arrested on a charge of second-degree criminal tampering with a domestic violence enhancer, Arapahoe County Sheriff Tyler Brown called the charge a “very low misdemeanor” and said no physical contact was made during the incident.

The woman involved, the mother of Jeudy’s 1-month-old son, asked an Arapahoe County judge to dismiss the case, indicating she contacted authorities to “monitor the situation” and never felt threatened during the argument, the Denver Post’s Sam Tabachnik reports. The judge has not dismissed the case, which is set for arraignment. Jeudy is to appear in court May 31.

The woman, with whom Jeudy is still in a relationship, accused the 23-year-old wideout of withholding medical records, her wallet and the baby’s car seat as she attempted to leave a residence Thursday, according to a police report. Each item was locked in a vehicle, per Brown. Jeudy accused the woman of taking one of his three phones. Jeudy went into police custody without incident but spent one night in jail.

A former first-round pick, Jeudy is a key part of the Broncos’ 2022 plans. With the Alabama alum becoming extension-eligible in January 2023, this season profiles as a potential turning point. Jeudy’s rookie contract runs through 2023 but can be extended through 2024 via the fifth-year option, a decision the Broncos must make by May of next year. Jeudy should be expected to attend Broncos offseason workouts going forward. This arrest falls under the purview of the NFL’s personal conduct policy, though it is not certain a suspension will be handed down.

Staff Notes: Broncos, Bills, Eagles, Giants, Cardinals

The Broncos again looked to George Paton‘s former workplace to add a high-ranking staffer. They brought in longtime Vikings executive Reed Burckhardt to be their new director of player personnel, according to Mike Klis of 9News. Burckhardt was with the Vikings 13 years, and Klis adds Minnesota’s new regime wanted to retain him. The veteran Minnesota staffer ended his Vikings run as the team’s director of pro scouting. Burckhardt will follow Broncos director of football operations Kelly Kleine in relocating from Minnesota to Denver under Paton and join assistant GM Darren Mougey as the team’s top Paton lieutenants.

Here are the latest post-draft front office and coaching staff changes:

  • After hiring longtime Broncos player personnel director Matt Russell this week, the Eagles continue to reshape their front office. Howie Roseman again looked to the Broncos, hiring veteran Denver staffer Jordan Dizon, Klis notes. Dizon, 36, worked with the Broncos for seven years, finishing his tenure as the team’s assistant director of pro scouting. The former linebacker who was once a Lions second-round pick is expected to become a national scout with the Eagles.
  • Giants GM Joe Schoen continues to form his front office, and after adding two-time coworker Dennis Hickey to the mix, the first-year GM is hiring another former colleague. Chris Rossetti, who was with the Dolphins during Schoen’s mid-2010s tenure, will become the Giants’ new director of pro scouting, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com tweets. Rossetti was most recently the Dolphins’ assistant pro scouting director. Big Blue is also hiring Mike Derice as a national scout, InsideTheLeague.com’s Neil Stratton tweets. Derice, a Brooklyn native, worked as a Colts area scout for the past 10 years. The Giants are adding an area scout as well, announcing the hire of Scott Hamel, who spent the past seven years with the Bears under Ryan Pace.
  • Former Jets area scout Alonzo Dotson is joining the Bills, with NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero noting (via Twitter) the veteran evaluator is expected to become a national scout with Buffalo. Prior to his four-year Jets tenure, Dotson spent six years as a Packers scout. He is the nephew of former Packers Super Bowl-winning defensive lineman Santana Dotson.
  • Shifting to the coaching side, the Cardinals made a couple of adjustments. Assistant wide receivers coach Spencer Whipple and quarterbacks coach Cam Turner are now the team’s co-passing-game coordinators. Cam Turner, one of Norv Turner‘s sons currently coaching in the NFL, will retain his role as QBs coach.

Giants Agree To Terms With First-Round DE Kayvon Thibodeaux, OT Evan Neal

The Giants have agreed to terms with their two first-round picks. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reports (on Twitter), that the Giants will sign defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux and offensive tackle Evan Neal to their rookie pacts following practice today.

Thibodeaux’s four-year rookie deal is worth a fully guaranteed $31.3MM (not including the non-guaranteed fifth-year option), per ESPN’s Jordan Raanan (on Twitter). The four fully guaranteed years on Neal’s contract are worth $24.6MM.

Thibodeaux was a candidate to go first-overall, but he was ultimately selected by the Giants with the fifth-overall pick. In three years at Oregon, Thibodeaux led the squad in sacks and tackles for loss. He finished his career with 19.0 sacks and 35.5 tackles for loss, and he also added 14 quarterback hurries over his career, leading the team last year with eight. In early February, Thibodeaux started to see his draft stock affected in a way not uncommon to Oregon alumni, with one pundit questioning the player’s”fire.”

Neal’s status as the top blocker in this year’s class was challenged by NC State’s Ikem Ekwonu throughout the draft process. At one point, the Alabama product was the definitive top OT prospect in the draft, but his stock seemingly fell a bit leading up to the draft. Despite falling below Ekwonu, Neal was still selected with the seventh-overall pick. At six-foot-seven, 360 pounds, Neal’s size and frame are certainly NFL-ready. He projects well as a powerful right tackle, though he started every game this season on the blindside. He earned a PFF grade of 84.5 for the 2021 season, in which he was a consensus First-Team All American.

Once the two signings are complete, 20 of the draft’s 32 first-round picks will have inked their rookie pacts, including every player in the top-eight (per Pelissero on Twitter).

Texans Sign 12 Undrafted Free Agents

The Texans continue to get younger. The team announced the signing of 12 undrafted free agents:

Green could have a chance to contribute on a shallow tight ends depth chart. After transferring from Minnesota to Houston, Green saw a larger role on offense, hauling in 13 receptions for 157 yards and three touchdowns. He’ll likely compete with rookie fifth-round pick Teagan Quitoriano for reps alongside Brevin Jordan.

Buccaneers Sign 13 UDFAs

After adding eight rookies in the draft, the Buccaneers added another 13 rookies yesterday. The team announced the signing of 13 undrafted free agents:

The Buccaneers added three UDFA wideouts, including the 5-9, 195-pound Sterns. The receiver had an iconic season at Western Kentucky, leading the nation in receptions (150), receiving yards (1,902), and touchdown catches (17). Only three players have accomplished this “Triple Crown” feat over the past 20 years, with Sterns joining DeVonta Smith and Michael Crabtree.

Fatukasi is the younger brother of New York Jets defensive tackle Folorunso Fatukasi. The younger Fatukasi finished his collegiate career with a 2021 campaign that saw him compile 85 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, and 2.5 sacks.

Browns Announce 12 UDFA Signings

This morning, the Browns officially announced the addition of 12 undrafted free agents to their rookie class:

Harley leaves the Hurricanes as the school’s all-time leader in career receptions (182, surpassing former Colts receiver Reggie Wayne) and single-game receptions (13). He’ll be joined in Cleveland by the Cougars’ receptions and receiving-touchdowns leader from last season, Travell Harris.

Logan spent six years in Baton Rouge, playing a key role in the Tigers’ run to their 2019 National Championship victory over Clemson, contributing a half-sack in the title game.

Jolly provides some electric ability at corner. He’s an aggressive cornerback who returned two picks for touchdowns in 2019. Jolly adds 25 passes defensed and 2 forced fumbles over his 45-game college career.

Titans Sign 17 UDFAs & 1 International Allocation

After making a litany of moves on Draft Day, including trading away star wide receiver A.J. Brown, Tennessee added 17 undrafted free agents to their existing nine-man drafted rookie class:

Anenih set career highs this year for the Cougars and made himself a priority for the Titans, signing for a guaranteed $150,000, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. Tennessee also saw the Hawkeye kicker as a priority, guaranteeing Shudak an impressive $40,000 at signing, according to Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network.

Odukoya played 40 career games at Eastern Michigan and is one of four players joining the league from the International Player Pathway Program. Odukoya, who hails from the Netherlands, will look to help strengthen the pipeline of international players to the NFL.

Jackrabbits safety Griffin II holds no relation with former Titans safety Michael Griffin.

Dolphins Announce 14-Man UDFA Class

After only adding four rookies through the 2022 Draft, the Dolphins signed a 14-man undrafted free agent class:

Miami was able to add some potential gems for their offensive line, bringing in two four-year starters from the Big Ten and SEC in Andries and Clary. They also made sure to bring in Diesch, a two-year starter for the Sun Devils after transferring from Texas A&M, signing him with a guaranteed amount of $140,000, according the Doug Kyed of Pro Football Focus.

The Dolphins also think they’ve uncovered a diamond in the rough out of northeast Texas. They signed Kohou out of Texas A&M-Commerce with a guaranteed amount of $130,000, according to Kyed.

Miami will also keep some prospects close to home. Johnson transferred from Tennessee to spend his last year of college close to home with the Hurricanes. Heatherly isn’t a Florida native, but he spent the last three years of college in Miami at Florida International.
