Vikings Make Four More GM Interview Requests

4:04pm: More names are emerging on the Vikings’ fast-growing candidate list. The Vikings want to interview Titans director of player personnel Monti Ossenfort, Ben Goessling of the Minneapolis Star Tribune tweets. Ossenfort’s name has been tossed around for GM vacancies for a bit now, dating back to his time with the Patriots.

With the Titans since 2020, Ossenfort advanced to the second round of Panthers GM interviews last year. He also has a history with the Vikings. The Minnesota-Morris alum worked as a training camp intern with the Vikes in 2001, Goessling notes.

8:59am: It was reported overnight that another three names have been added to the Vikings’ list of general manager candidates. Two of them are from the Eagles, including one who represents a piece of NFL history.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Vikings have put in a request to interview Eagles VP of football operations Catherine Raiche (Twitter link). That news is ground-breaking, as it is believed to be the first time a woman has been requested to be interviewed for a GM position. Schefter and others have noted that Susan Tose Spencer was the first female GM in NFL history, holding that title from 1983-85, but she was promoted internally to that role.

This doesn’t appear to be the first time that someone has shown interest in Raiche. Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer notes in his annual GM preview that current Browns GM Andrew Berry tried to bring the 32-year-old with him when he left that same VP of football operations role to come to Cleveland. He adds that one of her former colleagues has stated “she will be the first female GM [hire]”. NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo notes that Raiche was promoted to her current position last year, following successful stints in the CFL and XFL which have helped her climb the executive ladder very quickly.

Garafolo also tweets that Eagles director of player personnel Brandon Brown has had an interview requested as well. Brown started full-time in an NFL front office with the Colts in 2015, then came to Philadelphia in 2017. He has spent the past five seasons with the Eagles, and was promoted to his current role – which includes work on both the pro and college scouting levels – in 2021.

Finally, Schefter tweets that the Vikings are requesting to interview Chiefs director of player personnel Ryan Poles. He has already been named as a candidate for the Giants’ open GM position, and was also linked to the Panthers for the same job last season. Poles has been with Kansas City since 2009, where he began as a scouting assistant, and has worked his way up to being a key member of the Chiefs’ font office.

These additions brings the total number of interview requests for the Vikings’ GM position to eight.

Texans Interested In Brian Flores, Jerod Mayo For HC Role

3:47pm: Another Patriots connection is set to be a factor here. Jerod Mayo is expected to be a frontrunner here as well, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com tweets. Bill Belichick‘s latest right-hand man on defense, Mayo spent time with both Flores and Caserio in Foxborough — as a player and assistant coach. Mayo received an interview request from the Broncos this week but has not been linked to the other jobs just yet. A Texans interview summons seems likely.

2:53pm: The David Culley and Brian Flores firings appear connected. Not long after the Dolphins surprisingly canned him, Flores has surfaced on the radar as a prime candidate to replace Culley in Houston.

The Texans have Flores positioned as the top candidate to take over as head coach, Aaron Wilson of Sports Talk 790 reports (on Twitter). Flores and Texans GM Nick Caserio worked together with the Patriots for over a decade, with Wilson adding the duo’s relationship remains close.

[RELATED: Texans Fire Culley After One Season]

This would be an interesting step for Flores, given the state of the Texans. The team has gone 8-25 over the past two seasons and does not have much to bank on long-term on its roster. Deshaun Watson, however, was believed to be interested in playing for Flores in Miami. That certainly does not mean the Pro Bowl quarterback would rescind his longstanding trade request, but it would be an interesting element injected into this equation.

Flores took over a Dolphins roster that was soon gutted in his first season, so the Texans would present somewhat familiar territory. The Dolphins are coming off back-to-back winning seasons, giving Flores some momentum — despite his clashes with team management — as this year’s hiring period gets going.

Texans To Fire David Culley

Despite little being expected of this Texans squad, the franchise is moving on from David Culley after one season. Culley is out in Houston after the team’s 4-13 slate, Mark Berman of Fox 26 tweets.

This move comes three days after Black Monday and two days after the Giants axed Joe Judge. While this clears out another HC position, it is a tough break for Culley, who took over a team in a bad situation.

In December, Culley was viewed as being safe to stay aboard for a second Houston season. Soon after, however, the winds started to shift a little. GM Nick Caserio may or may not have a successor lined up. Given Caserio’s connection to Josh McDaniels, speculation understandably ensued connecting those dots.

Culley navigated the messy Deshaun Watson situation fairly smoothly, deactivating the embattled Pro Bowler throughout the season. The Texans’ previous regime also saddled the new one without first- or second-round picks in last year’s draft. Caserio signed numerous midlevel veterans to one- or two-year contracts, setting up the 2021 season to be a transition year before the team becomes more aggressive on the rebuilding front. While the Texans improved and notched multiple major upsets late in the season, it was not enough for a placeholder HC to stay on.

The Culley hire came out of nowhere. The Ravens wide receivers coach was not involved in any other team’s interview process and had not called plays for an NFL team previously. The Ravens recouped two third-round picks, the second coming this year, because of this surprising hire. With Culley’s firing coming after Brian Flores‘ surprising ouster, Mike Tomlin is the NFL’s only Black head coach at the moment. Flores figures to have options soon, perhaps in Houston, with he and Caserio working together in New England for over a decade. But he has only been connected to the Bears thus far.

Some murkiness has surfaced regarding Culley’s contract. After Adam Schefter of ESPN.com tweeted that just two years on Culley’s five-year deal were guaranteed, the 66-year-old coach indicated (via Berman, on Twitter) his full five-year deal is, in fact, guaranteed. A partially guaranteed deal would indeed be a highly unusual arrangement. Culley will collect $17MM through the life of this deal, Tom Pelissero of NFL.com tweets.

Culley’s in-game decision-making certainly veered toward questionable often, and it was clear he was not viewed as a long-term leader in Houston. Davis Mills‘ promising performance down the stretch, despite being a third-round pick, does provide some hope for a franchise that has gone 8-25 over the past two seasons. Among rookies, only Mac Jones had a better QBR than Mills — albeit in a smaller sample size — this season.

Mills’ progress notwithstanding, the Texans are also firing offensive coordinator Tim Kelly, Schefter tweets. Kelly was a holdover from the Bill O’Brien regime and had been with the team since O’Brien’s 2014 hire. Kelly, 35, worked his way up from quality control level to become Houston’s OC by the 2019 season. The Texans advanced to the playoffs behind a Watson Pro Bowl campaign that year. While Watson excelled in 2020 as well, the team fell off a cliff.

The Texans ranked 32nd offensively this season, and Ian Rapoport of NFL.com adds that Culley was asked to make changes to his offensive staff (Twitter link). While it can obviously be argued Culley was set up to fail this season, his refusal to fire Kelly may well have contributed to the one-and-done. Kelly’s ouster will certainly not be the last one, with the Texans pivoting again under Caserio.

Utah LB Devin Lloyd Declares For Draft

One of the top defensive prospect’s in this year’s draft is turning pro. Utah star Devin Lloyd, the consensus top linebacker in the country, has declared for the 2022 NFL Draft, according to a report from the Athletic.

The six-foot-three, 235 pounder had a massively productive four-year career in Utah. He saved his best for last, producing 111 tackles, including 22 for a loss, seven sacks and four interceptions in 14 games in 2021. His play earned him Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year honors and was a main reason why the Utes won their conference and made their first ever appearance in the Rose Bowl. While he is on the leaner side for a middle linebacker, his length and speed should easily let him translate that production into NFL success.

Lloyd tweeted a video celebrating his time with the team. In it, he says in part, “Thank you for the experiences, the memories and the relationships that will last a lifetime. Throughout my years here, I have grown tremendously as a man. To my family, I truly couldn’t have done it without you… To my coaches, words can’t express how appreciative I am for everything you’ve done for me on and off the field. .. To the best fans in the nation, thank you for everything; your constant love and support was felt by everyone on the team… Utah, I love you, you’ll always be a part of my heart and I’m blessed to be a part of your history“.

The Athletic’s Dane Brugler has Lloyd being drafted sixth overall by the Giants in his latest mock draft.

Cowboys Activate S Jayron Kearse

The Cowboys continue to get closer to full strength ahead of their playoff opener. Safety Jayron Kearse has been activated from the Reserve/COVID-19 list, per a team update

Kearse was placed on the virus list on January 8th, which kept him out of the team’s regular season finale. He had played in each of the other 16 games this season, his first in Dallas. With a team-leading 101 tackles, along with 10 pass breakups and two interceptions, the Cowboys will certainly welcome his return to the field. In particular, he will play a key role in defending 49ers tight end George Kittle – a matchup that will go a long way to determining the outcome of Sunday’s game.

The 27-year-old is the latest Cowboy to come back onto the roster. Micah Parsons and Tyron Smith were among those activated off of the virus list yesterday. Assuming Kearse can practice sometime this week, nearly every member of the 53 man roster will have practiced leading up to the first game in what the team hopes will be a deep postseason run.

Alabama OT Evan Neal Declares For Draft

Another one of the projected top picks in the 2022 NFL draft has turned pro. Alabama offensive tackle Evan Neal, arguably the top offensive linemen in the country, has declared for the draft, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport (Twitter link).

Neal, a true junior, has been a starter since his arrival in Tuscaloosa. At six-foot-seven, 360 pounds, his size and frame are certainly NFL-ready. He projects well as a powerful right tackle who could be dominant in the run game with his size and strength, though he started every game at left tackle this season. He earned a PFF grade of 84.5 in 2021, in which he was a consensus First-Team All American.

Neal’s status as the top blocker in this year’s class may be challenged by NC State’s Ikem Ekwonu, but he is generally seen as the No.1 option, and rarely projected to be picked later than third overall. Some have Neal in the conversation to go first overall, being selected ahead of consensus top pass rushers Kayvon Thibodeaux and Aidan Hutchinson. Given the Jaguars’ need for help along the offensive line, Neal certainly wouldn’t be the most surprising name to be taken at the top of the board.

In a tweet, Neal said in part, “I thank my family, my mom and dad, and every single coach and fan who has supported me throughout my collegiate career… This season was incredible and I will forever remember all that it took to get us there. Playing football at the highest level was always my goal and to be able to do that at the University of Alabama has been a dream come true… Thank you to every single person who supported me during my time at Alabama”.

Broncos, Graham Glasgow Rework Contract

The Broncos have reworked the contract of one of their starting offensive linemen. According to ESPN’s Field Yates, guard Graham Glasgow has agreed to restructure his contract to lower his 2022 base salary.

The move sees Glasgow’s base salary drop from $8.4MM to $3.1MM. However, there is the possibility the 29-year-old can earn $1.4MM of that back through playing-time incentives. While the $3.1MM salary is a steep cut from its original figure, it is fully guaranteed.

Glasgow was originally drafted in the third round in 2016 by the Lions, where he spent the first four years of his career. Continuing as a full-time starter with the Broncos, he has played two years in Denver, but has been out of the lineup since Week 9 and finished the year on IR due to a broken leg.

Without the veteran blocker, the Broncos relied on third-round rookie Quinn Meinerz as their starting right guard for the rest of the season. Between the Division III standout and left guard Dalton Risner, a healthy Glasgow would give the Broncos quality options at both guard positions moving forward.

Glasgow originally signed a four-year, $44MM deal in 2020. His base salary is set to jump back up to $9.4MM in 2023, with a cap hit of $14MM for that season.

DeAndre Hopkins Out For Cardinals’ WC Game

While the Cardinals may be welcoming back one of their key veterans for Monday’s Wild Card game against the Rams, they will be missing their No. 1 receiver. DeAndre Hopkins is not ready to come back to game action yet, according to an update from Pro Football Talk’s Charean Williams

Hopkins was placed on IR in December after he suffered a torn MCL. That move, as expected, ended his regular season with an estimated recovery time of six weeks. While there was some hope he would be ready in time for Wild Card Weekend, the later stages of the playoffs were always the more realistic target for his return.

The 29-year-old’s second season in Arizona ended with a less than stellar stat line: 42 catches for 572 yards and eight touchdowns; the receptions and yardage totals are career lows thanks in large part to the fact he only played 10 games in 2021. Regardless of if he is able to come back at some point in the postseason, he is still under contract through 2024, with his cap hits scheduled to jump to $12.5MM next season and a maximum of $27.2MM in 2023.

The other injury news to keep an eye on is in relation to defensive end J.J. Watt. The 32-year old was designated to return from IR last week, opening the door to him returning in time for the playoffs. The news was surprising, given that the surgery he had to address a shoulder injury suffered in October was widely believed to have ended his season. Instead, he may be able to continue his inaugural season in the desert.

The Cardinals will finish the Wild Card round on Monday night when they visit the Rams.
