Titans Cut John Simon

Julio Jones is on his way back. To help make room for him — as well as wide receiver Racey McMath and safety Dane Cruikshank — the Titans have released linebacker John Simon.

Simon joined the Titans in July, replacing fellow pass rusher Tuzar Skipper on the offseason roster. Before that, he spent three years with the Patriots. In 2020, he started in all 16 games and registered 53 stops with two sacks. This year, he’s been on-and-off of the Titans’ roster, resulting in two appearances with four total tackles.

All in all, he’s got 99 appearances and 52 career starts to his credit for the Ravens, Texans, Colts, Patriots, and Titans. Now, he could be en route to yet another NFL club, though the Titans have made a habit of bringing him back to Nashville.

The Titans dropped their last two games before the bye, but they’re still 8-4 and atop the AFC South. On Sunday, they’ll look to get back in the win column when they host the Jaguars.

Titans Designate Julio Jones For Return

The Titans have designated wide receiver Julio Jones for return from injured reserve. Jones will be eligible to practice starting today, which means that he can be activated any time within the next 21 days.

A hamstring injury has limited Jones to just six games so far this season. Last month, the Titans moved to place him on IR, freeing up an additional roster spot for a few weeks.

Jones, who has a history of hamstring trouble, has caught 21 passes for 336 yards and no touchdowns so far in his first Titans season. The good news is that the Titans are still 8-4, despite playing most of the year without Jones or star running back Derrick Henry.

The 11th-year receiver could come back as soon as Sunday, the Titans’ first game off of their bye week. A win will put them one step closer to officially clinching the AFC South and, potentially, capturing a first-round bye.

Jets To Sign Eddy Pineiro

Sounds like the Jets are moving on from Alex Kessman. After his two missed two extra points on Sunday, the Jets are signing kicker Eddy Pineiro, according to agent Drew Rosenhaus (Twitter link via Adam Schefter of ESPN.com).

The Jets had an early lead over the Eagles when Kessman sent his second extra point wide left. Things only got worse from there as the Birds went on to win 33-18.

Just gotta make them,” Kessman said (via the New York Post). “It’s what I do for a living, and I gotta make those kicks. There’s no excuses…I gotta control what I can control. If they send me out there to kick, I go out there and kick. Doesn’t matter where from, what time. I go out there and do my job, and I didn’t do my job today. Plain and simple. … I’m not gonna let two kicks define me and the kicker I am.”

Gang Green will in fact hold him accountable for his missed XPs. Now, Pineiro will become the Jets’ ninth kicker since 2017.

Pineiro lost the Colts’ kicking competition this year and hasn’t seen live action since 2019. That year, spent with the Bears, he went 23-of-28 on field goals (82.1%) and 27-of-29 on XPs.

Bengals’ Logan Wilson To Miss Time

Bengals linebacker Logan Wilson has been diagnosed with a shoulder dislocation (Twitter link via NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport). The injury will take him off the field for some time, according to RapSheet, and his timetable for return remains unclear.

Wilson had to be carted off on Sunday following a Chargers punt return. Backup Markus Bailey also suffered an injury during the game, leaving the Bengals with just three healthy LBs in Germaine Pratt, Joe Bachie, and Clay Johnston. Fortunately, Bailey will be OK — Rapoport hears that he’s only dealing with a stinger.

Wilson, a second-year pro out of Wyoming, has started in all 12 of his games for the Bengals this year. To date, he’s got four interceptions, one fumble recovery, one sack, and 92 total stops. The advanced metrics at Pro Football Focus have him tied for 47th among all qualified linebackers, good for second on the team behind Pratt (37th).

The Bengals went on to lose 41-22, dropping them to 7-5 on the year. Fortunately for them, the Ravens also lost on Sunday, so they’re just one game back of Baltimore for the AFC North lead. On Sunday, they’ll have a chance to draw closer when they host the 49ers in Cincinnati.

Latest On Panthers’ Matt Rhule

The Panthers shook up their coaching staff over the weekend by firing offensive coordinator Joe Brady. That’s led to speculation over Matt Rhule‘s status in Carolina, but Jonathan Jones of CBSSports.com (on Twitter) doesn’t get the sense that the head coach’s job is in danger.

Meanwhile, Rhule was atop the wishlists at LSU, USC, and Oklahoma before they made their hires. And, another high-profile NCAA job opened up earlier today when the University of Miami dismissed Manny Diaz. Despite all of that, Rhule is not interested in a return to the college ranks at this time, according to sources who spoke with Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com.

As a college coach, Rhule went 47-43 in seven seasons at Temple and Baylor. That record doesn’t necessarily jump off of the page, but NFL teams have took notice of Baylor’s quick turnaround from the Art Briles era under his watch. Rhule’s Bears went 1-11 in his first season (2017) but they improved with time. In his final season at the helm, Baylor reached the Sugar Bowl, prompting serious from the Panthers, Giants, and Browns.

Rhule, 47 in January, would be a splashy hire for any high-profile team in need. Meanwhile, the Christian McCaffrey-less Panthers are 5-7 on the year, giving Rhule a combined record of 10-18 across the last two years. Things haven’t gone according to plan for Rhule, but it sounds like the Panthers may give him another chance for 2022. And, if that’s the case, he’s inclined to stay put.

This Date In Transactions History: NFL Extends Roger Goodell

On this date in 2017, the NFL furnished Roger Goodell with a brand new five-year deal to take him through the 2023 league year. The new pact — worth up to $63MM annually — was met with criticism from some, including Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. Roger Goodell (vertical)

Along the way, Jones accused Falcons owner Arthur Blank — head of the league’s compensation committee — of “misleading” NFL owners on the terms of Goodell‘s extension. Technically, Jones was not a member of the six-man Compensation Committee, but he was regarded as an unofficial seventh member. Using his influence, Jones helped to galvanize a small group of owners against a sizable new deal for Goodell. Or, at least, bring new scrutiny to the situation. But, over time, he lost momentum. By the end, there were only a handful of owners in Jones’ corner.

For their part, the league claimed that there was a “nearly unanimous consensus” to finalize the deal. Blank ultimately signed off on Dec. 6, 2017, much to the chagrin of Jones who was still fuming over Ezekiel Elliott‘s six-game ban.

Our Committee unanimously supports the contract and believes that it is fully consistent with “market” compensation and the financial and other parameters outlined to the owners at our May 2017 meeting, as well as in the best interests of ownership,” the Compensation Committee said in a memo. “We also have expressed in those conversations our strong belief that we should proceed to sign the agreement now, consistent with the unanimous May resolution and to avoid further controversy surrounding this issue. We are pleased to report that there is a nearly unanimous consensus among the ownership in favor of signing the contract extension now.”

Goodell still gets his fair share of criticism, but this story does have something of a happy ending. Four years later, Jones now says that he’s in favor of the commissioner’s lucrative contract.

Certainly those numbers on the face of them are large numbers,” Jones said on HBO recently (via the New York Post) “Roger has been an excellent commissioner. I might say that back when years ago when I first came into the league they would be big numbers. I don’t know for sure what a man of your talent was making back then. But I know we could look at where we are today, and those numbers have increased a lot during that time. So everything has gotten more as opposed to maybe what we’ve looked at in the past.”

“But I think this. I think that Roger Goodell has done an outstanding job as commissioner of the NFL.”

WFT’s Logan Thomas Done For Year?

The Washington Football Team believes that Logan Thomas has suffered a torn ACL (Twitter link via NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport). Further testing will likely confirm the news, shutting the tight end down for the rest of the year.

It’s been a trying year for Thomas, who just returned from a hamstring injury last week. In his six of 12 possible games this season, Thomas has caught 18 passes for 196 yards and three touchdowns. That’s hardly the encore he expected after his career year in 2020 — 72 receptions for 670 yards and six touchdowns.

Meanwhile, Washington is still without No. 2 TE Ricky Seals-Jones. Seals-Jones saw the bulk of Washington’s TE targets after Thomas’ hammy injury, tallying 23 grabs for 230 yards and two scores across nine games. However, he’s been out since Week 10 thanks to a lingering hip issue. That leaves WFT with Sammis Reyes and fourth-round pick John Bates as their only healthy options.

In addition to the ACL, Thomas “likely” tore his MCL as well, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.com (Twitter link). That could further complicate Thomas’ rehab and prevent him from joining the team for early offseason workouts.

Raiders’ Kenyan Drake Done For Year

The season is over for Raiders running Kenyan Drake (Twitter link via NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport). After suffering an ankle fracture on Sunday, Drake will be shut down for the year and placed on the injured reserve list.

Drake, the Raiders’ second-leading rusher behind starter Josh Jacobs, had to be carted off midway through the second quarter against Washington. WFT was leading 7-0 at the time and went on to win 17-15.

I know he’s had significant injuries in the past,” said Jacobs (via ESPN.com). “So, I’m just praying for him right now and praying for his family. His whole family was here at the game.”

Drake’s year will end with 254 rushing yards, two touchdowns, and a solid 4.3 yards per carry average. He also added 29 grabs for 283 receiving yards and one TD through the air.

The Raiders may add another RB to join Jacobs and Peyton Barber, though Jalen Richard could be ready to return from the COVID-19 list soon. Down to 6-6 on the year, the Raiders are set for a must-win game against the Chiefs next week.
