Peyton Manning Discusses Potential Future Role With Broncos

Despite spending only four seasons in Denver, Peyton Manning established himself as a Broncos legend, with the QB guiding the organization to four division titles, two Super Bowl appearances, and one Super Bowl championship.

Since Manning decided to retire following the 2015 campaign, the Hall of Famer has still maintained a consistent presence within the organization, leading some to wonder if he’d ultimately take a role in the Broncos’ front office. While Manning has yet to officially rejoin the organization, he told Mike Klis of 9News in Denver that he’d certainly be interested in an official reunion.

“I am as interested in what’s going to happen as anybody because I care about it,” Manning said.“…I’ve gone on a year-to-year basis in this 2nd chapter. I’m going to try to do this, this year. I don’t go past that because you try different things and maybe you like it, maybe you don’t. I will always be a part of the Broncos and Colts organizations in some way. But I’m interested in what’s going to happen. I haven’t said no to anything officially forever. I’ve just said no to some things each year. The next year, maybe things change. So, who knows what will happen in that.”

Specifically, Manning was referring to the current squabble in Denver regarding ownership. We heard recently that the trial between several of the children of late Broncos owner Pat Bowlen‘s is off, and it could ultimately result in a sale of the organization. Manning would presumably prefer to see how that ordeal is resolved before he commits to an official role, but it certainly sounds like he’s receptive to some kind of gig down the road.

“A Couple Of Teams” Interested In FA DB Michael Thomas

Veteran defensive back Michael Thomas was limited to only nine games in 2020 thanks to a pectoral injury, but the former Pro Bowler told Aaron Wilson that he’s been fully cleared by Dr. James Andrews.

“I feel amazing,” Thomas said (via Wilson on Twitter). “The pec is feeling good, my body feels healthy. Texans, whoever, come get me. My agent told me a couple of teams have been poking around. I would love to go back with the Texans. We’ll see.”

Thomas inked a one-year deal with Houston this past offseason, and he collected 16 tackles in nine games before suffering a torn pectoral in late November. The defensive back later underwent season-ending surgery, but it sounds like the 31-year-old is now fully recovered. Teams searching for secondary and/or special teams depth would surely consider adding the veteran to their depth chart.

The 2012 undrafted free agent out of Stanford has put together a very solid NFL career. Following a stint with the 49ers to kick off his professional career, Thomas ended up spending five seasons with the Dolphins, starting 25 of his 56 games. He got a two-year deal from the Giants prior to the 2018 campaign, and he earned his lone Pro Bowl nod that season after compiling 59 tackles, one sack, and two picks.

Jaguars, Urban Meyer Subpoenaed In Iowa Investigation

We’re continuing to monitor the Richard Sherman case, but it isn’t the only legal situation developing around the NFL on Wednesday. The Jaguars and their head coach Urban Meyer have been subpoenaed by the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Iowa, Garry Smits of the Florida Times-Union reports.

The subpoena is for “documents, electronic transmissions and other evidence related to the hiring and subsequent resignation of former University of Iowa strength coach Chris Doyle by Meyer in February.” The evidence they’re seeking is regarding a “$20 million racial discrimination civil lawsuit filed against Iowa on Nov. 12 by eight former Iowa players.”

Doyle was a former assistant at Iowa, who left the school last summer with a $1.1MM separation agreement after he was accused of making racist remarks and belittling players. Meyer subsequently hired him for his inaugural Jaguars staff, which drew a lot of backlash.

Meyer initially stood by Doyle, but eventually Doyle resigned shortly after joining the team. The Jaguars issued a curt statement denying that they’ll be of any use in the investigation. “We respect and will cooperate with the legal process as required,” it read. “However, the Jaguars have no information that would be relevant to the lawsuit between student-athletes and the University of Iowa.

That might turn out to be true, but it’s another unwelcome distraction for Meyer as he prepares for his first season as an NFL head coach. We’ll update with any further developments.

Richard Sherman’s Wife: ‘No One Was Injured’, Additional Details On Arrest

Another update to pass along in the developing Richard Sherman case. The star cornerback was arrested early this morning for “burglary domestic violence,” and that’s not all.

He’s also being investigated for a hit and run an hour or so prior to the incident, and police say a K9 was used to take him down after he became “combative” with them. Needless to say, it’s a serious situation, but fortunately it now sounds like the worst was avoided. Even though he was arrested for alleged domestic violence, Sherman’s wife Ashley Moss issued a statement to Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times that nobody was hurt.

At this time we’re going to make no statements, except he didn’t harm anybody,” Moss said. “My kids were not harmed in the incident. He’s a good person and this is not his character. We’re doing all right, just trying to get him out. I want people to know no one was injured.

As Moss alluded to the family is still trying to get him out of jail because he’s currently being held without bail. They might have to wait a bit. Sherman hasn’t been formally charged yet and can’t be until he appears in court, which won’t be until Thursday afternoon, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com tweets. So Sherman will remain in King County Correctional Facility for at least another day.

This is great news that there apparently wasn’t any physical violence, but it certainly doesn’t mean that Sherman is off the hook. He still may be in big trouble, and it will likely take a while to fully play out. We’ll keep you posted as we hear more.

Richard Sherman Also Being Investigated For Hit And Run, More Details On Arrest

We continue to get new details on the Richard Sherman, and things continue to look worse for the free agent cornerback. In addition to his arrest for “burglary domestic violence,” Sherman is also being investigated for a hit and run and “damage to state Department of Transportation property,” Adam Schefter of ESPN.com tweets.

“State police say that at about 1:00 a.m. PT, they received a report of a single-car incident” where a car struck a concrete barrier, Schefter writes. The driver of the car “was able to drive the vehicle off the exit and abandoned it in a nearby parking lot. The registration was run, and it came back to Richard Sherman.”

That’s not good. That apparently happened at 1 a.m., and then the call to police from a relative of Sherman’s partner was placed at 2 a.m. The phone call alleged Sherman was trying to force his way into the home, and he was arrested when police arrived.

Meanwhile, a report from TMZ has more details on the arrest. According to TMZ police are claiming that Sherman “became uncooperative and combative during questioning,” and that a K9 was eventually deployed to take him down.

That would explain why he was taken to a local hospital to check for injuries. It’s a scary and sad situation, and one that could take a while to play out.

This isn’t shocking, but an NFL spokesman confirmed to Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times that Sherman could face discipline from the league depending on the outcome of the case (Twitter link). No matter what, this certainly won’t help his slow-developing free agency, and don’t expect to see him signed any time soon.

Latest On Richard Sherman’s Arrest

Richard Sherman fought with police prior to his arrest on Tuesday night, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.com. Once apprehended, Sherman was transported to a local hospital and cleared medically. After that, he was jailed and held without bail.

Sherman, a multiple-time Pro Bowler, has spent the last three years with the 49ers. Prior to that, he made his name as the leader of the Seahawks’ Legion of Boom. He’s currently without an NFL home, due in large part to last year’s Achilles tear which limited him to three games.

Details of this week’s incident remain sparse, but Schefter hears that it was prompted by a 2 a.m. phone call from a relative of his partner, alleging that Sherman was trying to force his way into the home. Cops found Sherman outside the house when they arrived. Fisticuffs followed, according to police.

We were made aware of an arrest last night of one of our player leaders for an alleged domestic violence incident and have activated our domestic violence crisis protocol for the protection and support of everyone involved,” the NFLPA said in a statement regarding Sherman. “We will continue to monitor events closely as more facts are made available to us.”

In 2019, his last healthy season, Sherman recorded 61 tackles and three interceptions, earning his fifth career Pro Bowl nod.

Jaguars’ Cam Robinson To Play On Tag

The Jaguars are not expected to reach a long-term deal with offensive tackle Cam Robinson before Thursday’s deadline (Twitter link via NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport). With that, he’s now set to play out his one-year, $13.8MM franchise tender.

[RELATED: No Deal For Bears, Allen Robinson]

Other franchise tagged players like WFT guard Brandon Scherff, Jets safety Marcus Maye, and Bears wide receiver Allen Robinson find themselves in a similar spot. In the case of C. Robinson, he has the potential to hit the top of the market next year. The former second-round pick missed 14 games in 2018 with an ACL tear, but he’s since started 30 contests over the past two seasons.

With no real Plan B for the LT spot, the Jaguars assigned him the $13.754MM tag earlier this year. Robinson hasn’t performed as an elite left tackle, but he’s still only 25 with lots of room to grow. Ultimately, the short-term arrangement makes sense for both sides. Now, the brand new Urban Meyer can evaluate Robinson before committing. It also helps that they can afford to absorb the pay bump, since they’re armed with a league-leading $38MM in cap room.

Ten players were franchise tagged this year, down from 14 in 2020. Justin Simmons, Dak Prescott, and Leonard Williams have since signed extensions, leaving seven players in the group.

Richard Sherman Arrested For “Burglary Domestic Violence”

Free agent cornerback Richard Sherman was arrested by Seattle police on Tuesday night on charges of “burglary domestic violence” (Twitter link via NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport). Sherman was denied bail as the incident is being investigated as a felony.

Beyond the public record of the arrest, the details are somewhat murky. In a legal context, this may or may not be a typical “burglary” — in DV cases, that could amount to breaking and entering a residence without permission.

Sherman, 33, was limited to just five games in 2020, but he was a second-team All-Pro not too long ago in 2019. Between his asking price, age, and decline in performance, he has yet to find his next NFL home. Last month, we heard that a return to the 49ers — or even the Seahawks — remained possible. However, his Tuesday night arrest will put any football plans on hold.

In 2019, his last full season, Sherman tallied 61 tackles and three interceptions en route to yet another Pro Bowl nod. For his career, Sherman has notched 36 interceptions and 115 passes defensed across ten seasons.

Latest On Vikings’ Jeff Gladney

Prosecutors will present their case against Vikings cornerback Jeff Gladney to a Texas grand jury on Thursday, July 22 (via the Minneapolis Star Tribune). Gladney is facing a felony family violence assault charge with the potential for anywhere between two to ten years in prison.

Gladney’s girlfriend alleges the 24-year-old corner struck her with closed fists during an argument in April. The accuser told police that Gladney punched her in her stomach, ribs and back. She also alleges that Gladney strangled her and dragged her across the ground.

The Vikings selected Gladney No. 31 overall last year as they revamped their cornerback group. He started in 15 games last year, notching 81 tackles and forced a fumble. He has not participated in the team’s offseason program this year. Needless to say, the Vikings are not banking on Gladney’s availability for 2021. And, no matter what happens from here, the NFL will surely suspend him.

Beyond Gladney, the Vikings’ cornerback group includes Patrick Peterson, Bashaud Breeland, Harrison Hand, and Dylan Mabin.

Jordan Matthews To Audition As TE

Longtime wide receiver Jordan Matthews is set to audition for teams this weekend as a tight end (Twitter link via NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport). Matthews seems serious about the move, having added more than 15 pounds to his frame in recent months.

[RELATED: Kelvin Benjamin Switches To TE, Signs With Giants]

Matthews teased his plans earlier this summer and began working out with tight ends including George Kittle and Robert Tonyan. He even switched representation, signing with Steve Caric, the agent for notable TEs like Zach Ertz, Austin Hooper, and Devin Asiasi.

Standing at 6-foot-3, Matthews always had the height to play tight end. Now tipping the scales at somewhere above 230 pounds, he has the bulk too. We’ve already seen one former wideout switch to tight end this offseason — Kelvin Benjamin has joined the Giants and old pal Dave Gettleman as a TE. Of course, there’s also former quarterback Tim Tebow, who is attempting a switch to TE with the Jaguars.

Matthews, a former second-round pick, had at least 800 receiving yards in each of his first three NFL seasons. He hasn’t matched that production over the past few years though. Since 2017, Matthews has hauled in just 49 receptions for 615 yards and three scores. He saw time in the 49ers’ final two games of the 2020 season, appearing on 14 offensive snaps without recording a catch.
