Falcons To Sign UDFA RB Javian Hawkins

The Falcons are revamping their backfield, having added Mike Davis this offseason. Todd Gurley remains unsigned, while the team cut Ito Smith. However, the team’s new regime did not select a running back in this year’s draft.

Atlanta will use undrafted free agency to add here, however. The team agreed to a UDFA deal with Louisville running back Javian Hawkins, according to NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero (on Twitter).

Hawkins surpassed 1,500 rushing yards for the Cardinals in 2019 and averaged 6.2 per carry as a junior last season. That slate stopped after eight games; Hawkins opted out during the season and declared for the draft. Scouts Inc. viewed Hawkins as a seventh-round-caliber prospect. He will join a Falcons team in a full-on transition at running back.

The top three ball carriers on Atlanta’s 2020 roster — Gurley, Smith and Brian Hill — are no longer with the team. Hill played on an RFA tender last season but has not been signed. Qadree Ollison, a 2019 fifth-round pick, joins Tony Brooks-James behind Davis on Atlanta’s depth chart.

The Falcons’ lack of a draft investment in the position would seemingly open the door for a veteran to complement Davis. A number of high-profile backs — Le’Veon Bell, Adrian Peterson, Duke Johnson and longtime Falcon Devonta Freeman among them — reside in free agency. As it stands now, Hawkins would have a notable opportunity to make the Falcons’ 53-man roster.

QB Feleipe Franks, Falcons Agree To Deal

Two of this year’s six Senior Bowl quarterbacks were not drafted this weekend. Both, however, now have UDFA deals.

Shortly after Jamie Newman agreed to terms with the Eagles, Feleipe Franks chose the Falcons, according to his agency (on Twitter). Like Newman, Franks spent time at two different southeastern programs. He finished his career at Arkansas.

A former Florida recruit, Franks worked as the Gators’ starter as an underclassman. In 2018, he threw 24 touchdown passes compared to just six interceptions. However, an ankle injury ended his 2019 season early. Kyle Trask, who ended up going in the second round to the Buccaneers, took over the Gators’ QB1 role last year. After transferring, Franks threw 17 TD passes and just four INTs in nine Razorbacks games last season.

The Falcons have tripled their quarterback room this week. For months, Matt Ryan resided as the only quarterback on the team’s roster. A.J. McCarron and Franks now join him. The latter will reunite with ex-Florida teammate Kyle Pitts, whom Atlanta selected fourth overall.

Washington To Sign UDFA RB Jaret Patterson

Despite a dominant junior season, Jaret Patterson was not among the running backs selected in this year’s draft. But he has a UDFA deal. The Buffalo prospect agreed to terms with Washington, Tom Pelissero of NFL.com tweets.

The 5-foot-9 back torched MAC competition in 2020, averaging 7.6 yards per carry and clearing the 1,000-yard barrier in just six games. Patterson matched his 19-touchdown output of his sophomore season, doing so in seven fewer games.

Patterson reeled off an eight-touchdown, 409-yard performance against Kent State in 2020. For his career, the productive back totaled 52 rushing TDs and 3,884 yards on the ground in three Buffalo seasons. He will join a Washington team that has been unable to establish backfield continuity in recent years.

While Washington has misfired on a couple of backs over the past several years, the team did do well to identify Antonio Gibson in the 2020 third round. Veterans Peyton Barber, Lamar Miller and J.D. McKissic are also on Washington’s roster, though Gibson profiles as the leader of the team’s 2021 backfield.

Jaguars To Sign UDFA LB Dylan Moses

A former five-star recruit who once projected to be a high draft choice, Dylan Moses was not one of the numerous Alabama starters to hear his name called this weekend. But he agreed to a UDFA deal minutes after the draft’s conclusion.

The Jaguars are signing the former Crimson Tide linebacker, Tom Pelissero of NFL.com tweets. Moses is coming off knee surgery and will begin his Jacksonville tenure on the team’s NFI list. He will be getting a nice payday for a UDFA, with Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle tweeting that Moses will pocket $70K in guarantees ($50K in guaranteed salary plus a $20K signing bonus).

Moses’ prospects dimmed somewhat after an ACL tear wiped out his 2019 season. However, he returned to action in 2020 and earned first-team All-SEC acclaim. Moses made 76 tackles (six for loss) in the COVID-19-shortened 2020 season, helping the Crimson Tide to a dominant national championship run. The accomplished defender revealed he played through knee pain as a senior, and the persistent knee trouble certainly affected his draft status.

Urban Meyer‘s first draft running the Jaguars did not include a linebacker. The team has Myles Jack and Joe Schobert returning to reprise their roles as three-down ‘backers. Moses certainly profiles as a flier but one with considerable qualifications, should he be able to overcome his run of knee trouble.

Eagles To Add UDFA QB Jamie Newman

The Eagles did not use one of their 2021 draft picks on a quarterback, but they will add at least one via undrafted free agency. Former Wake Forest and Georgia passer Jamie Newman will sign with Philadelphia, Tom Pelissero of NFL.com tweets.

Newman transferred from Wake Forest to Georgia but did not end up playing for the Bulldogs, opting out of last season. He worked a the Demon Deacons’ starter in 2019, throwing 26 touchdown passes and averaging 7.9 yards per attempt. The 6-foot-4 passer did participate in the Senior Bowl, however. Scouts Inc. graded Newman 184th among this year’s prospects.

Philly not selecting a quarterback clears the way for Jalen Hurts. While ownership was believed to be behind Hurts receiving a true opportunity this season — rather than being pushed in a quarterback competition — it was somewhat surprising the Eagles did not select a QB. Newman will join Hurts and Joe Flacco, whom the Eagles signed this offseason, on the team’s depth chart.

Although five quarterbacks went in this draft’s top 15 picks, only 10 were selected in total. Of the Senior Bowl participants, Newman joined Arkansas’ Feleipe Franks in not being drafted.

Colts Expect To Extend Darius Leonard, Braden Smith

The Colts are busy with the draft, but when speaking to the media about their picks, owner Jim Irsay also revealed the team’s plans for a couple of their guys currently on the roster.

Irsay said the Colts expect to extend linebacker Darius Leonard, and also offensive tackle Braden Smith ‘if the numbers work,’ Stephen Holder of The Athletic tweets. As Holder notes, Smith’s status beyond this season had previously seemed a bit more up in the air, while it was a foregone conclusion that the team would attempt to lock up Leonard.

Both players are members of Indy’s 2018 draft class, and in fact they were picked back to back at 36th and 37th overall. Each is entering the final year of their respective rookie deals, and are currently set to be free agents after this season. Leonard became an instant star, and has made an All-Pro team in each of his first three campaigns.

He was also the league’s Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2018. He’ll likely be seeking, and get, top of the inside linebacker market money. Smith has started at least 13 games in every season, and has been very solid but not spectacular.

It’ll be interesting to see what kind of contract he’ll be seeking, as he’s never been elite but also is a dependable starter and only just turned 25.

No wonder Irsay cautioned the finances could be an issue with him. Either way, it sounds like something will get done soon to keep Leonard in Indianapolis long-term.

Colts Draft Texas QB Sam Ehlinger At No. 218

Another big name college quarterback is off the board. With pick No. 218 in the sixth-round, the Colts have drafted Texas passer Sam EhlingerIndianapolis acquired the pick from the Saints earlier Saturday.

Ehlinger didn’t generate a ton of excitement as a pro prospect, but as the Longhorns’ leader for the past four seasons he became very well known to college football fans. He threw for 2,566 yards, 26 touchdowns and five interceptions this past year, picking up a second-team All-Big 12 nod in the process.

He became the 10th signal-caller drafted in the 2021 draft. He’ll now join a Colts quarterback room that doesn’t have much in it beyond Carson Wentz. Only 2020 UDFA Jalen Morton and 2020 fourth-round pick Jacob Eason are currently on the roster behind Wentz. The Colts have rotated quarterbacks ever since Andrew Luck retired, so it’s not surprising they’re taking developmental flyers.

Buccaneers Hope To Re-Sign Blaine Gabbert

The Buccaneers took a swing at a potential Tom Brady successor this weekend, drafting Kyle Trask in the second round. Earlier this offseason, GM Jason Licht said Blaine Gabbert could be viewed as a realistic Brady baton recipient. That plan may still have life.

Despite the Bucs’ Trask pick and re-signing of third-stringer Ryan Griffin, Bruce Arians said he wants Gabbert back in the fold.

I really hope that we can get Blaine done soon,” Arians said, via JoeBucsFan.com. “And go in and have normal competition. Blaine has proven what he can do for us.”

Gabbert has spent the past two seasons in Tampa but has been a free agent since the market opened in mid-March. He also has a pre-Florida history with Arians, having played for the Cardinals as well. The former first-round pick has not been connected to other teams, and the Bucs have done a masterful job of keeping their free agents as they prepare to defend their Super Bowl title.

With teams rarely carrying four active-roster quarterbacks, Gabbert re-signing would point Griffin to either the practice squad or another team and Trask to a developmental third-stringer role. Gabbert, a 10-year veteran, could also opt to head to another team that does not have a highly drafted backup on the roster. But the Bucs have retained all the players they wanted to retain this offseason. And Arians clearly wants to retain Gabbert.
