Texans To Consider Brian Schottenheimer For HC Job?

An offensive coordinator with three franchises dating back to the 2006 season, Brian Schottenheimer has not received a chance to become a head coach. The Texans may be considering changing that.

One of the members of the Texans’ search committee, Jed Hughes, made a strong recommendation for the current Seahawks OC to receive serious consideration to succeed Bill O’Brien as Houston’s next head coach, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com tweets. Schottenheimer has not been connected to a head coaching search since the Seahawks hired him to run their offense in 2018.

The second-generation NFL coach developed a reputation as a conservative play-caller, with the Seahawks finishing with the second- and third-most rushing attempts in 2018 and ’19, respectively. In Schottenheimer’s 11 full seasons as a coordinator, his offenses have never ranked in the top 10 in passing yards.

This season, Schottenheimer has backed off that a bit. Russell Wilson has already surpassed his single-season high for touchdown passes (36) and is on pace to end this season with far more pass attempts than he logged in 2019 (516). Wilson is also completing passes at a career-high rate (70.4%) while maintaining the 8.0 yards-per-attempt figure around which he has hovered under Schottenheimer.

A former Jets and Rams OC, Schottenheimer may trail a now-higher-profile coordinator in this search. Eric Bieniemy may be the favorite to land the job, with Schefter adding that many believe the Chiefs OC is a strong candidate. Deshaun Watson has advocated for Bieniemy, and the Texans are definitely interested in the third-year Chiefs OC. However, Bieniemy stands to attract interest outside of Houston as well. He is on the Falcons’ radar.

Vikings Work Out K Chandler Catanzaro

Dan Bailey has missed seven kicks over his past two games, and the Vikings are looking into a potential replacement. They worked out Chandler Catanzaro on Tuesday.

The Vikings signed Bailey shortly after then-rookie Daniel Carlson‘s tough day in Green Bay during a September 2018 tie game. Bailey fared worse Sunday in Tampa, missing three field goals and an extra point. Against the Jaguars in Week 13, Bailey missed three kicks. His misses in Florida impacted the NFC playoff race, elevating the Cardinals to the No. 7 spot and dropping the Vikings to 6-7.

Catanzaro, however, has not kicked since the 2018 season. The Buccaneers cut him midway through that slate, but the Panthers used him as a Graham Gano replacement in four games. Catanzaro is best known for his three-year Cardinals run from 2014-16; he also kicked in 16 games for the 2017 Jets.

The free agent’s career 83.8% field goal make rate sits nearly 3% behind Bailey’s career mark (86.0), but the former Cowboys specialist certainly has weakened his standing with the Vikings after his two most recent showings. This season, Bailey has missed six field goals. He exited Week 14 with what would be a career-worst 66.7% connect rate.

If the Vikings began giving Catanzaro COVID-19 tests Monday, he could kick in their Week 15 game. Players must pass six days’ worth of coronavirus tests before suiting up with new teams. The Vikings released kicker Tristan Vizcaino from their practice squad Tuesday, clearing the way for another potential Bailey replacement to be added.

Raiders Place Henry Ruggs On Reserve/COVID-19 List

Ahead of a key Thursday game against the Chargers, the Raiders are set to be without their field-stretching rookie wideout. They placed Henry Ruggs on their reserve/COVID-19 list Tuesday.

While the Raiders have not gotten as much from Ruggs statistically as some of the other teams who drafted receivers this year, the Alabama product has helped the team’s offense as a deep threat.

It is not yet known if Ruggs tested positive for the coronavirus or qualifies as a high-risk close contact. Either scenario would, however, give him an opening to play in Week 16. This makes for another setback for the 2020 draft’s top wideout selected. He missed much of Las Vegas’ offseason program after suffering an off-field injury and missed time earlier this season because of a hamstring malady.

Ruggs is averaging 18.0 yards per catch this season, hauling in 23 passes for 414 yards and two touchdowns. The coveted prospect has seen low-cost UFA Nelson Agholor operate as Las Vegas’ top outside receiver as of late.

The Raiders also promoted Vic Beasley from their practice squad. The Raiders’ loss to the Colts bumped them back to the “In the Hunt” tier of the AFC playoff picture, placing obvious importance on their Week 15 game against the Bolts.

Jets Cut K Sergio Castillo

The Jets are making another kicking change. The team has released kicker Sergio Castillo after a tough outing against the Seahawks, they announced on Tuesday.

New York entered the year with Sam Ficken as their kicker, but injuries have limited him to only seven games. Castillo was first inserted after Ficken went down following Week 6, and again when Ficken re-injured himself in Week 11. In six games he’ll finish his run with the Jets having made only eight of 15 field goal attempts with a long of 55. He made six of his seven extra point attempts. On Sunday he was a disaster, missing three field goals in the Jets’ loss to Seattle.

An undrafted free agent out of West Texas A&M back in 2014, Castillo finally got his first taste of regular season NFL action this season. He spent a few years in the CFL, and also played in the AAF and XFL. If nothing else, not too many people can say they’ve played in all four leagues. Ficken is eligible to come off injured reserve this week, and the Jets also claimed Chase McLaughlin off waivers yesterday, putting the nail in Castillo’s coffin.

AFC North Notes: Green, Mayfield, Big Ben

During the Bengals’ loss to the Cowboys on Sunday, receiver A.J. Green moved within one touchdown of Chad Johnson for the franchise’s all-time record. But while he was chasing that milestone on the field, his comments after the game might be more significant. Speaking to the media, Green made it “very clear” there’s a good chance he won’t be back in Cincy next year, Ben Baby of ESPN.com writes. “I love my time here,” Green said. “Who knows what is going to happen? I will be ready for anything and be excited to get back to playing football whether it is here or somewhere else.” It’s a stark shift in tone for Green, who has always insisted he envisioned himself playing his entire career with one team.

Green is in the midst of a disappointing season that was supposed to be a triumphant comeback for the former All-Pro after he missed all of 2019 with an ankle injury. Cincinnati placed the franchise tag on him this offseason to buy some time on making a long-term decision, but his production obviously hasn’t matched his price tag so far. There was speculation earlier this year that he wanted to be traded after his usage declined, although he publicly denied that. So far on the year Green has caught only 41 of 88 targets, racking up 419 yards and two touchdowns. Baby notes that Green’s tone has “drastically changed,” and it looks like we might be nearing the end of what was a legendary run with the Bengals. For many years in a row, the fourth overall pick of the 2011 draft was one of the best wideouts in the game. Assuming he does explore his options on the open market this spring, at 32 and coming off multiple recent injury-plagued years, he likely won’t be getting any sort of big contract.

Here’s more from the AFC North:

  • Baker Mayfield had himself a night on Monday Night Football, even as the Browns fell to the Ravens. The former first overall pick has really turned it on recently, and Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com wrote even before last night’s game that the young quarterback was “playing himself into blockbuster extension territory in the offseason.” Kay Cabot writes that the coaching staff in Cleveland has grown convinced as the season has gone on that they’ve got their quarterback of the future, and that if he closes the season strong “he can expect to receive the blockbuster extension in the offseason.” It’s been a nice turnaround for the Oklahoma product, as his struggles early on in the year had many questioning whether he was the long-term answer for Kevin Stefanski. With his performances the last few weeks, he’s silenced most of the critics. He has only one interception in his last six games, and has the Browns on the verge of clinching a playoff berth. Mayfield is still under team control for two more seasons after this one, and Kay Cabot writes that at the very least the Browns will be exercising the fifth-year option in his contract for 2022 this offseason. It sounds like he’s about to get a whole lot more than that though.
  • Mayfield isn’t the only member of the Browns looking for an extension. Receiver Rashard Higgins is playing out the final year of his deal, and while Kay Cabot writes Cleveland will “likely” re-sign him, she also says nothing is imminent on that front. While she notes that players like Higgins are in a holding pattern as teams wait to see what the 2021 salary cap will look like, she also says he “will likely be wrapped up long-term.” The 2016 fifth-round pick had a huge touchdown on Monday night, and now has at least 65 yards in three of his past four games. His playing time has fluctuated through multiple different coaching staffs during his time with the team, and he had only four catches in ten games last year. But when given the opportunity he has usually delivered, like when he had 572 yards and four scores in 13 games in 2018. Now, it sounds like he might finally get rewarded after playing 2020 on a deal that paid him only $910K.
  • The Steelers have now lost back to back games, and Ben Roethlisberger has struggled mightily in both of them. Even before Sunday’s loss to the Bills, Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports wrote that sources told him Roethlisberger’s lingering knee injury has “become a source of greater concern” within the organization. Interestingly, La Canfora reports that Roethlisberger’s close relationship with offensive coordinator Randy Fitchner “has been the cause of some worry” within the team. La Canfora notes that Big Ben is granted wide authority to change calls as he sees fit, and the implication seems to be that he has been checking out of runs too much and dictating the short passing game offense that has begun struggling mightily in recent weeks. Roethlisberger has now gone four straight games averaging 5.8 yards per attempt or fewer. The ground game still wasn’t able to get anything going against Buffalo, and if Roethlisberger’s knee issue turns out to be more serious than we’ve realized, this Steelers offense could be in permanent trouble. This will be a situation to monitor as the regular season draws to a close.

Eagles’ Jack Driscoll Done For Year

Eagles right tackle Jack Driscoll will miss the rest of the season with a significant MCL sprain, sources tell NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero (on Twitter). Driscoll — who played through the pain to finish out Sunday’s game against the Saints — will be officially placed on injured reserve today or tomorrow.

Lane Johnson‘s October injury opened the door for Driscoll and the fourth-round pick has made the most of the opportunity, especially in recent weeks. The Eagles’ front five allowed Jalen Hurts to thrive against New Orleans last week with solid pocket protection and ample room to run. Hurts finished with 17-of-30 passes completed, plus 106 yards off of just 18 carries. Only a handful of other Eagles quarterbacks — including Michael Vick, Donovan McNabb, and Randall Cunningham — have rushed for 100+ yards in the modern era.

The 4-8-1 Eagles still have a 12% chance of reaching the playoffs, per the New York Times, but those odds will drop drastically if they can’t get past the Cardinals this week. The Birds need a 3-0 finish to have a puncher’s chance, but they’ll have to do it with yet another missing piece on the front line.

Packers’ Aaron Jones Chooses Drew Rosenhaus

Aaron Jones doesn’t want to wait much longer for a deal. With contract negotiations at an impasse, the Packers running back fired his agent and hired Drew Rosenhaus as his new representative (Twitter link via Adam Schefter of ESPN.com). He’ll make the move along with his brother, Alvin Jones, a former UTEP and Ravens linebacker.

Jones is in the final year of his rookie deal and the former fifth-round pick is in line for a serious pay bump. After averaging 5.5 yards per carry in a limited sample through his first two years, Jones has proven that he can produce as a primary back. Last year, he notched 1,084 yards on the ground with 4.6 yards per tote. This year, he’s got 800+ yards across eleven games with an average of 5.1 yards per touch. He’s a receiving threat, too, having already snagged 38 passes for 285 yards and two scores in 2020.

The fourth-year pro won’t top Christian McCaffrey‘s contract, but he’ll aim high as he looks to secure the bag. In the meantime, he’ll keep the focus on the field as the Packers look to wrap up the conference.

Texans’ Justin Reid Done For Year

The season is over for Justin Reid. The Texans are set to place the safety on the injured reserve list with a hand injury, as Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets

It’s familiar territory for Reid, who has undergone surgery in each of the last two offseasons. Before the 2019 season, he went under the knife for a wrist injury. Last year, it was a torn labrum. It’s not immediately clear whether Reid will require surgery this time but, at minimum, he’ll need some time to rest and recover.

Reid’s season ends with 83 stops, two sacks, six tackles for a loss, and four quarterback hits. Despite the roadblocks, the former 2018 third-round pick from Stanford has quietly established himself as one of the game’s better young safeties. He’s also shown that he can play through the pain. Up until this year, Reid missed only regular season game with a concussion. Last year, he started in every one of the club’s other 15 games, picking up two interceptions to go along with 78 total tackles. He was also on the field for every defensive snap in both of the Texans’ postseason contests.

It was a rough Sunday for everyone in Houston as the Texans lost to the Bears, dropping their second straight game in lopsided fashion. They’ll wrap the season against the Colts, Bengals, and Titans before embarking on a pivotal offseason.
