Raiders To Keep Gabe Jackson

The Raiders won’t trade Gabe Jackson. At least, that’s the plan, according to GM Mike Mayock

The future of Gabe Jackson? He’s our starting right guard,” Mayock said (Twitter link via Adam Hill of the Las Vegas Journal Review).

The Raiders used an early fourth-round pick on Clemson guard John Simpson, but Mayock indicates that he’ll be eased into the pro game behind Jackson on the depth chart. At 6’4″ and 321 pounds, Simpson was regarded as one of the strongest interior offensive linemen in this draft. Still, his technique needs lots of work, and he’s likely too green to be a first-stringer off the bat.

Jackson, meanwhile, has started in all but one of his games for the Raiders across six seasons. The former third-rounder has three years left on his deal with base salaries of ~$9.3MM in each season. The Raiders, reportedly, weren’t asking for much in trade talks, but they didn’t find a deal they liked. Mayock claims that he’ll join them for the inaugural season in Las Vegas, but it’s a situation worth monitoring as Jackson’s deal has no remaining guaranteed money.

Injuries have hampered Jackson lately, costing him eight games over the past two years. In 2019, Pro Football Focus graded Jackson as just the league’s 40th-best guard.

Colts Trade CB Quincy Wilson To Jets For No. 211 Pick

The Colts will trade cornerback Quincy Wilson to the Jets, as Manish Mehta of the Daily News tweets. In exchange, the Jets will send a sixth-round pick (No. 211 overall) to Indianapolis.

The Colts brought Wilson into the league three years ago as a second-round pick. He was unable to find a consistent role in the defense, however, and never realized his potential in the NFL. With one year left on his deal, he’ll look to get back on track with the Jets.

Wilson has made ten starts for the Colts, split evenly between his first two seasons. To his credit, he’s shown flashes, including a strong second half in 2018.

In New York, he’ll slot somewhere alongside Pierre Desir, Arthur Maulet, Bennett Jackson, Blessuan Austin, and fellow ex-Colt Nate Hairston. Of course, there’s no guarantee that he’ll be able to make the 53-man cut, but he’ll get an opportunity to stick between now and the start of the season.

Here’s the Jets’ draft haul thus far, via PFR’s tracker:

1-11: Mekhi Becton, T (Louisville)
2-59: Denzel Mims, WR (Baylor)
3-68: Ashtyn Davis, S (California)
3-79: Jabari Zuniga, DE (Florida)
4-120: Lamical Perine, RB (Florida)
4-125: James Morgan, QB (Florida International)
4-129: Cameron Clark, OT (Charlotte)
5-158: Bryce Hall, CB (Virginia)
6-191: Braden Mann, P (Texas A&M)

Eagles Draft WR Quez Watkins

The Eagles’ need for speed continues. Towards the end of the sixth round, the Eagles selected wide receiver Quez Watkins out of Southern Miss.

On Thursday night, the Birds used the No. 21 overall pick on TCU’s Jalen Reagor, who ran the 40-yard-dash in less than 4.3 seconds. Today, they swung a deal with the 49ers for former track star Marquise Goodwin, fleet footed Boise state receiver John Hightower, and now Watkins – another speed specialist.

Watkins posted the third-fastest time at the combine in Indianpolis and some believed he could go as early as the fourth round. The Birds, at No. 210, were happy to stop his fall.

Here’s a look at the Eagles’ draft haul thus far, courtesy of the PFR tracker:

1-21: Jalen Reagor, WR (TCU)

Eagles, Bears Agree To Day 3 Swap

The Bears jumped up 23 spots in Round 5 to draft Tulane wide receiver Darnell Mooney. In exchange for sliding down into the sixth round, the Eagles acquired two additional selections in this draft.

Philadelphia will receive Chicago’s Nos. 200 and 233 overall picks, Field Yates of ESPN.com tweets.

Mooney will follow Notre Dame tight end Cole Kmet as pass-catching weapons coming to Chicago. Mooney saw action in all four of his Green Wave seasons, topping out with a 993-yard, eight-touchdown junior slate in 2018. That season, Mooney averaged 20.8 yards per catch.

The Bears released Taylor Gabriel earlier this offseason did not address the area in free agency or during the first two days of the draft. Although Chicago selected Riley Ridley last year, its Saturday trade points to having some notable plans for Mooney.

Bills Draft QB Jake Fromm

The wait is over for Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm. He’ll join the Bills, who have selected him with the No. 167 overall pick, a fifth round choice.

Fromm was once viewed as a potential No. 1 overall pick, but he took himself out of the running with an iffy 2019. Last year, Fromm completed just 60.8% of his throws, the lowest rate of his collegiate career. Still, the Bills see potential in Fromm, who led the Bulldogs to the National Championship Game as a true frosh in 2017.

Over time, Fromm lost his footing to Joe Burrow (LSU), Tua Tagovailoa (Alabama), Justin Herbert (Oregon), Jordan Love (Utah State), Jacob Eason (Washington), and other signal callers. In the not too distant past, Fromm was viewed as a potential NFL starter. Now, the feeling is that he’s a quality QB2 in the making.

Fromm will work to improve his arm strength in Buffalo as he slots behind former first-round pick Josh Allen in Buffalo. The Georgia native might not be a world-beater, but his football smarts should allow him to find a home in WNY.

Eagles Deal No. 164 To Dolphins

The Eagles moved down in Round 5, sending their 164th overall pick to the Dolphins. With the selection, Miami took Boise State defensive end Curtis Weaver.

Philadelphia will slide down to No. 173 and pick up a seventh-round choice (No. 227) for doing so.

Weaver was productive as a pass rusher throughout his career, recording at least 9.5 sacks in each of his three college seasons and twice ending seasons with double-digit sacks. Weaver registered 11 as a freshman and 13.5 as a junior in 2019 and bypassed his senior season to enter the draft.

Scouts Inc. graded Weaver as a third-round talent. The Dolphins have now drafted three defensive linemen and signed two defensive ends in free agency. Weaver will attempt to carve out a role on a team that now employs Shaq Lawson and Emmanuel Ogbah. The Dolphins also have former first-rounders Charles Harris and Taco Charlton.

49ers Trade Marquise Goodwin To Eagles

The Eagles found some more help at wide receiver. They’ve acquired wide receiver and former track star Marquise Goodwin from the 49ers, as Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets. In exchange, the Birds will send a fifth-round pick to SF.

The Eagles needed additional weapons for Carson Wentz this offseason – specifically, receivers with serious speed. They’ve done that by picking up Goodwin and drafting TCU’s Jalen Reagor this weekend. They’ll join a receiver group that also features Alshon Jeffery, elite deep threat DeSean JacksonJ.J. Arcega-Whiteside, and Greg Ward, Jr. Meanwhile, at tight end, the Eagles have one of the best in the biz in Zach Ertz, plus youngster Dallas Goedert.

The 49ers have been trying to trade Goodwin for a while, and in the lead-up to the draft GM John Lynch said he had come close a couple of times. Many 49ers beat writers believed they wouldn’t find a taker and would have to end up cutting him, so it’s a nice win for San Fran to get a fifth-rounder.

Goodwin entered the league as a third-rounder with the Bills back in 2013, but the speedster never did much in Buffalo. He had a breakout season with the 49ers in 2017, racking up 962 yards while averaging 17.2 yards per reception. He’s been hampered by injuries the past two years though, and only had 186 yards in nine games this past season. He has two years left on the three-year, $20.3MM extension he signed with San Francisco in March of 2018.

Patriots Draft Kicker In Fifth Round; Still Haven’t Selected QB

The Patriots found a new kicker in the fifth round, selecting Marshall’s Justin Rohrwasser with the No. 159 overall pick. Rohrwasser is the first kicker to be selected in the 2020 draft. Meanwhile, they’ve yet to draft a new quarterback.

No one’s exactly sure what the Patriots are going to do under center as they get set for life without Tom Brady. Even though it would have been a very un-Bill Belichick move, some speculated that the Patriots could consider a bold trade up the board for the likes of Tua Tagovailoa or, more realistically, tapped a mid-round QB like Washington’s Jacob Eason. Instead, they’re holding off.

Even if the Patriots select a QB in the late stages of the draft, they’ll finish the weekend with Brian Hoyer penciled in as their QB1. That doesn’t mean their out of other options, of course. Former MVP Cam Newton and former No. 1 overall pick Jameis Winston are still available. There are also some notable arms available via trade, including longtime Bengals starter Andy Dalton.
