Latest On Antonio Brown

The NFL’s meeting with Antonio Brown accuser Britney Taylor spanned 10 hours Tuesday, but the league does not have a timeline on potential discipline for the Patriots wide receiver, Mark Maske of the Washington Post reports.

Taylor has accused Brown of multiple instances of sexual assault and filed a civil suit against the 31-year-old wideout. Brown has denied the allegations. Brown made his Patriots debut Sunday and remains on New England’s active roster.

Since Taylor’s suit, another woman has come forward accusing Brown of sexual misconduct. An unidentified artist Brown commissioned to paint a portrait of him at his Pittsburgh-area home said the then-Steeler approached her from behind while she was painting and did so with only a towel covering his genitals, Robert Klemko of SI.com reports. The artist said she met Brown at a National Youth Foundation charity auction. NYF co-founder Sophia Hanson told Maske she has not been contacted by the league and, to her knowledge, neither has the artist.

The second accuser is not pressing charges, Klemko adds. Brown’s attorney tweeted his client denies this accusation as well. Brown has not been charged with a crime.

Were Brown to be placed on the commissioner’s exempt list, he would still be paid but would be ineligible to join Patriots teammates for practices or games. The NFL has used this tactic during pending cases, though this matter is somewhat different given that it’s a civil case and not a criminal investigation.

The league’s investigation is expected to take months, per The Athletic’s Daniel Wallach (subscription required). So an exempt list decision could well be a defining moment for Brown’s 2019 season. Ultimately, Taylor’s testimony helps lead the legal reporter to the conclusion that Roger Goodell will place Brown on the exempt list soon.

Bears Work Out Shane Ray, Noah Spence

The Bears worked out edge defenders Shane RayNoah Spence, Nate Orchard and Dekoda Watson on Tuesday, according to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune.

A former first-round pick of the Broncos back in 2015, Ray was among the Ravens’ final cuts this past summer after signing a $1.2MM deal with $200K guaranteed shortly after this past May’s compensatory deadline. After having 12 sacks in his first two seasons, Ray missed large portions of the next two seasons due to injury and was looking forward to having a bounce back campaign in 2019.

Spence, a former second-round pick of the Buccaneers back in 2016, most recently worked out with the Redskins after not making the Buccaneers’ 53-man roster. Orchard, who was recently released by the Dolphins, and Watson, who was among the Broncos’ final cuts, are both looking to continue their careers after bouncing around to a number of teams over the past couple of years.

Behind starters Khalil Mack and Leonard Floyd, the Bears feature Aaron Lynch and former UDFA Isaiah Irving. Tuesday’s workout contingent each boasts at least three years of NFL experience.

Jets Work Out CB Kayvon Webster

Eyeing a seventh NFL season, Kayvon Webster auditioned for the Jets on Tuesday, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets. Webster played for the Broncos during each of Adam Gase‘s two seasons as Denver’s OC (2013-14).

The Saints released Webster prior to cutdown Saturday. This marks the former third-round pick’s first workout since. For the Jets, it represents another sign their Gase-Joe Douglas regime would like to change things up at cornerback.

High-priced Mike Maccagnan addition Trumaine Johnson was benched for Monday night’s game. Beyond Johnson, the Jets do not have much in the way of proven corner talent. Douglas said at multiple offseason junctures he wanted to upgrade here. Webster, though, would profile as more of a depth piece for the group.

A four-year Broncos backup, Webster was a full-time starter with the 2017 Rams before suffering a season-ending injury. An injury ended his 2018 campaign as well. He played in just two Texans games last season and met with the 49ers and Bears before landing in New Orleans. Should Webster play in 2019, it would be his age-28 season.

Raiders Release Jonathan Cooper

The Raiders released guard Jonathan Cooper, the club announced Tuesday. This comes shortly after Richie Incognito‘s two-game suspension concluded.

Cooper signed with the Raiders this past July to serve as a potential stopgap starter in the wake of Incognito’s ban. Cooper was inactive for the Raiders the past two weeks.

Since being selected seventh overall by the Cardinals in the 2013 draft, Cooper has played for Cardinals, Browns, Cowboys, Redskins and Raiders. He caught on with the Redskins because of injuries last season and joined the Raiders because of a suspension. With Incognito back this week, there was little reason to keep the seldom-used blocker on the roster.

Oakland played without both of its first-string guards over the first two weeks, with Gabe Jackson still recovering from injury. With Jackson improving, the Raiders’ offensive line is soon set to look quite different.

Chargers Sign Lance Kendricks

The Chargers have signed veteran tight end Lance Kendricks, the organization announced.

Kendricks comes to the Chargers after spending the first part of this season with the Patriots. Fresh off a one-game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy, he was recently released to make room for Antonio Brown last week.

The 6-foot-3 tight end has appeared in 125 career games, catching 241 passes for 2,505 yards and 19 touchdowns. The Wisconsin product posted a career-high 50 catches and 499 yards in 2016 while with the Rams. He caught 19 passes for 170 yards and a touchdown last season with Packers.

Since Hunter Henry went down with injury, the Chargers have been rolling out a combination of Virgil Green and Sean Culkin at tight end. This duo combined for only one catch for nine yards in last week’s loss to the Lions.

Jets’ Sam Darnold Eyeing Week 5 Return

Jets quarterback Sam Darnold is eyeing a Week 5 return against the Eagles, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com tweets. Darnold, of course, missed last week’s contest with mono and is still feeling sluggish as he recovers. In a few weeks, doctors say he’ll be ready to take the field again.

The Jets’ QB situation went from bad to worse on Monday night after Trevor Siemian‘s ankle folded like a Slinky. Siemian is out for the year, leaving young Luke Falk as the club’s de factor starter.

Darnold, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 draft, showed flashes of promise last year, though he finished out with only 17 touchdowns against 15 interceptions in 13 games. This year, the Jets were excited to see what he could do, but all they’ve seen so far was his start in a losing effort against the Bills.

At minimum, the Jets will be without the USC product for their contest against the Patriots on Sept. 22. On Oct. 6, after their early bye, they might just have Darnold back in action.

Cam Newton To Miss Time?

Following Thursday night’s game, Ron Rivera said Cam Newton‘s early-season struggles were not due to injury. The Panthers’ stance has changed on this front, and their ninth-year quarterback looks set to miss time.

Newton informed Panthers officials of foot pain after the team’s loss to the Buccaneers last Thursday, David Newton of ESPN.com notes. No solid timeline for the former MVP’s return exists, per GM Marty Hurney. This is another mid-foot sprain, per Albert Breer of SI.com (on Twitter). Newton suffered this injury in Week 3 of the preseason and re-aggravated it Thursday. He missed nearly two weeks of practice recovering from the initial foot injury.

It almost certainly sounds like Kyle Allen will start this week against the Cardinals. Allen, who finished last season as the Panthers’ starter, resides in front of third-round rookie Will Grier on Carolina’s depth chart. The Panthers do not plan to sign a veteran in the interim, Rivera added.

Newton initially suffered this foot injury in his short preseason cameo. He played in the Panthers’ first two games but was not especially effective, finishing Week 2 with a 48% completion rate. The Panthers have lost Newton’s past eight starts, this record coinciding with the former MVP’s foot and shoulder maladies. Newton has delivered the highest percentage of uncatchable passes through two games, per Pro Football Focus’ Steve Palazzolo (on Twitter).

Allen and Grier split reps in practice Tuesday. This could be a multi-game absence. The Panthers travel to Arizona and Houston in Weeks 3-4 before returning home to face the Jaguars. Carolina’s bye is not until Week 7.

Texans Sign Bryan Anger, Cut Trevor Daniel

Another punter switch in Houston. A year after Trevor Daniel beat out Shane Lechler, the young punter will lose his job to former third-round pick Bryan Anger.

The Texans initially signed Anger just before training camp but gave Daniel the punting job after the preseason. After two games, Houston will go with the seven-year veteran over the 2018 UDFA. Daniel will head to the waiver wire.

Daniel averaged 43.5 yards per punt in his first two 2019 games. He punted seven times in the Texans’ 13-12 win over the Jaguars. Anger, 30, punted in 16 games from 2012-18, serving as the Jags’ punter for four seasons and the Buccaneers’ punter for the past three. He’ll now be called upon to help another South-division franchise.

The team also brought in Marquette King for a workout, Field Yates of ESPN.com tweets. King has not punted since the Broncos released him last season.

Colts Hold Kicker Workout

Despite Adam Vinatieri not opting to retire, the Colts held a kicker audition. The team worked out Cody Parkey, Elliott Fry and Younghoe Koo, Field Yates of ESPN.com tweets. This workout occurred today, after Vinatieri decided not to retire, NFL reporter Howard Balzer tweets. Also part of the audition: Greg Joseph, Chase McLaughlin and Cole Hedlund, per Balzer.

None of these kickers has signed with Indianapolis yet, but the 1-1 team is doing due diligence in light of Vinatieri’s rough start to the season.

Parkey worked out for the Jets recently, but Gang Green went with a Kaare Vedvik waiver claim instead. They now have Sam Ficken at kicker. Parkey has not kicked in a game since his infamous double-doink sequence ended the 2018 Bears’ season, but he has five seasons’ experience.

Koo has also participated in workouts but has not kicked since some late-game misses cost him his Chargers job early in 2017. A South Carolina alum, Fry has yet to kick in an NFL game. Neither has Hedlund, who kicked at Arkansas and North Texas. Joseph served as the Browns’ kicker last season, taking Zane Gonzalez‘s job in September 2018. He did not win Cleveland’s kicking competition this year. McLaughlin did not make the Bills out of camp. He kicked at the University of Illinois from 2015-18.

This is not yet an ominous sign for Vinatieri, but the 46-year-old kicking icon may now be on notice. The future Hall of Famer may be kicking for his job in Week 3.

Steelers Place S Sean Davis On IR

The Steelers’ blockbuster trade Monday night makes more sense now. Minkah Fitzpatrick will take Sean Davis‘ roster spot. Pittsburgh’s fourth-year safety landed on IR due to a shoulder injury he suffered Sunday.

Davis missed the Steelers’ opener with an ankle injury, and after the Week 2 malady, the improving back-line defender will be out at least eight weeks. This marks a rough development in Davis’ contract year.

This was set to be a prove-it year for the former second-round pick, with the Steelers not planning to give Davis an extension before this season’s conclusion. Davis has started 41 games with Pittsburgh since his 2016 rookie slate, and after a brutal 2017, he showed promise last season.

Fitzpatrick did not have a clear role in Miami. Playing safety alongside the Steelers’ 2018 first-round pick, Terrell Edmunds, may be his first job in Pittsburgh.
