Jets Bring In DE Jeremiah Attaochu For Visit

The Jets brought in former Chargers and 49ers defensive end Jeremiah Attaochu for a visit, according to Field Yates of ESPN (Twitter link).

Attaochu, who was released by the 49ers yesterday during final cuts, was a second round pick by the Chargers back in 2014. The Jets have made clear all offseason that they aren’t satisfied with their current group of pass-rushers, so it makes sense they’d look to some recently released veterans for help.

Attaochu signed a one-year deal with San Francisco back in March, but apparently didn’t show enough to stick. While he never lived up to his draft status and has struggled with injuries at various points, he’s shown he can be a fairly productive pass-rusher when given the chance.

Back in 2015, he started 12 games for the Chargers and notched six sacks, a career high. Given the state of the Jets’ current edge rushers, it wouldn’t be surprising if Attaochu lands in New York.

Saints Sign RB Mike Gillislee

The Saints are adding a running back, signing veteran Mike Gillislee according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network (Twitter link).

Rapsheet reports that it’s a one-year deal for Gillislee. The Saints were looking for running back help with Mark Ingram suspended for the first four games of the season. Saints coach Sean Payton has emphasized over and over that the team wants to avoid putting too much wear on Alvin Kamara, so Gillislee could play a significant role on early downs.

Gillislee was cut by the Patriots as they trimmed their roster to 53 yesterday. New England was very high on Gillislee when they signed him away from the Bills as a restricted free agent before the 2017 season. He scored three touchdowns in week one of last year, but his role gradually decreased as the season went on and he was a healthy scratch down the stretch.

The writing was on the wall for Gillislee when the Patriots signed Jeremy Hill in free agency and drafted Sony Michel in the first round of this year’s draft. He now finds a new home in New Orleans after the Saints surprisingly cut preseason star Jonathan Williams yesterday. They wasted no time bringing in Gillislee, and he should stick with the team the entire season.

Bengals To Re-Sign DE Michael Johnson

The Bengals will re-sign defensive end Michael Johnson after releasing him on Saturday, tweets Paul Dehner Jr. of the Cincinnati Enquirer. It’s a one-year deal for Johnson, who was not forced to accept a pay cut from his previous salary.

Johnson had been a Bengals starter in five of the past six seasons, but third-round selections of Jordan Willis and Carl Lawson last year — along with 2018 third-rounder Sam Hubbard — made the 31-year-old talent a less important commodity. Johnson registered five sacks last season and has 44 in his career.

Now that he’s back in the fold, Johnson is likely to see action at both defensive end and tackle, the latter in nickel situations.

Panthers Place Matt Kalil On Injured Reserve

The Panthers have placed left tackle Matt Kalil on injured reserve, the club announced today. Carolina has signed cornerback Lorenzo Doss in a corresponding move.

Kalil recently underwent a knee scope, and the issue is concerning enough that he’ll miss at least the first eight games of the season. However, the Panthers are hopeful Kalil can return later this year. Kalil, 29, has been durable for most of his NFL tenure: while he missed 14 games with a hip injury in 2016, he’s played in all 16 games in every other season of his career.

With Kalil sidelined, Carolina will turn to 2017 second-round pick Taylor Moton to handle left tackle.
